Crypto-related?
Nothing like that. I will say that after looking at the source it is not accurate for federal countries such as the US. It should be a fair bit higher I think.

Public sector/government cost relative to GPD/per capita ?

No, but closest so far I think.

Interesting how the wealthy states of Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait are on one end of the spectrum while Western Europe is on the other

Yeah, but those states are also near Russia, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Paraguay and Bolivia.

It could be oil-related but no… presence of money-laundering?

How rainfall in each country compares to Greenland on Midsummer's Day. :dunno:

For federal states like the US this colour should have a state based overlay to be comparable to say the UK, where a few states are the current colour but most states are darker.

No, nothing like that.

Is this linked to religion?

Employment rates then?

could count as a clue.

If I understand it aright, If US had an overlay showing states, populous states would be in dark green and it's only our large low-population states that draw the country as a whole toward lime green.

I'm happy to admit I don't understand it aright.
