Amount of land occupied? Number of fortresses? Number of conscripts?
Finland, Belarus, Indochina.

So you know why France and Belgium are in the top three, what about the third.

I would also suggest looking for a different pattern (not World War related) in the next couple groups.

well then, it's bicycles. Or beer.
Eidted to the above post to fix clarify. It is World War related.

Amount of times the words 'World War' were mentioned in journals per capita.

Number of deaths of the plague following ww1?

Or the number of soldiers died on French/Belgian etc... soil?

No, it is related to the world wars. And the bottom part of the list is orders of magnitude lower than the first (the last colour is actually 0 with a slight difference from grey and the group above it has 1 while France is several hundred thousand). I tried to do it as one colour shaded to accurately represent the proportion, but that left most of the map basically white.
As such, you are probably better off ignoring everything below Australia, South Africa, and Libya). As an addition, a large majority of China's are in Hong Kong, I don't have the actual split, though.

Number of WWII deaths per capita?

What about Israel?

number of war cemeteries? I know great swathes of Northern France and Belgium are taken up by such cemeteries. If not that- number of military graves?

Specifically, war graves maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The organization (jointly run and funded by the governments of the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and India) maintains the graves and memorials for Commonwealth dead and missing in both World Wars (extended through August 1921 for WWI and Decemeber 1947 for WWII). There are also some non-Commonwealth war graves that they maintain (such as the Dutch casualties buried at Hong Kong) that are included in this data and some non-war graves that were not included (which are all that are in the No War Graves category). I was expectign someone to pick up on Austalia, South Africa, and Canada being fairly high to tie it to the Commonwealth.

I was somewhat surprised at how widespread the graves were, though.

What about Israel?
It would be British operations against the Ottoman Empire during WWI. There would also be some from attacks on British troops in the Mandate (such as the soldiers killed in the King David Hotel bombing).

Do you also have it in numbers instead of in percentages?
Switzerland and Sweden are surprising.

I saw that but my suspicions were kind of undone by France being number one. Good map though.

That was a hard map! Though it shouldn't have been, now I know.

Part of the reason I used it was that there were a couple red herrings built in (France, obviously, and the sheer amount of the world covered is a bit misleading to).

Switzerland and Sweden are surprising.

My source was wikipedia. I had a spreadsheet with the totals and percentages, but I just got rid of it. I used the total of Unidentified and Identified war graves.

Switzerland will largely be the crews of aircraft that flew there to be interned there rather than becoming German POWs (which would be battle damaged aircraft unable to make it to Britain). Some of these planes would arrive with dead and wounded crewmen who would subsequently die.

Sweden would likely be similar. The Royal Navy had some operations in the Baltic in WWI, with the primary objective of cutting trade between Sweden and Germany) and nearby in Norway in WWII.

That was a lot of work for you. Just imagine if we'd guessed it right away.

Not too much, I copy and pasted the data into Excel.
I got value out of just doing it.

I was also interested to see the results. And there were a few things that were unexpected (the aforementioned Sweden for one).

I spent too much time making the legend, though. Being colourblind does not work well with these things.
