Hammer of the North v2 PBEM

I think for the Scots the first place is at the location of Scone Palace in central Scotland (just outside the eastern-most Scottish city, from the outset), the second place to be used is in the central highlands northeast of Oban, and the third in the middle of the border area to Northumbria (heavy barb country in the scenario from outset). For the Frisians I managed to find a couple of cool spots that are accessible as well as not too exposed.

Let me get one thing straight. Let's say I'm the Danes and I "pull the sword". Do I need to have the English capital to get that king unit or will he appear in the Danish capital?
Otherwise I liek your idea, just this one thing confused me. ;)

He will appear in Jelling (as usual), before setting out to inspect his new English domains ;)

- it would be possible to do an alternate scenario, where a new Danish king is crowned in an English city, but will require different 'swords of coronation' for each civ, then, i.e. more unit slots, as well as quite a large amount of extra events space, so I settled for the less elegant solution of all new kings being crowned in the 'home' capital - especially since it is such a rare scenario, I can live with it.

Nope, when a king dies, the events will try and create a 'sword of coronation' (which is a barbarian non-moving unit) at the first of the three spots, and if this space is occupied, it will try the next location. If the second and third spots are all occupied (by cities or non-barbarian units), no 'coronation sword' unit will be created, and the opportunity to gain a new king lost for good.

When the sword is 'taken' i.e. the unit destroyed, a new king will be crowned, and no 'coronation sword' be necessary, until that king dies. But losing a king means considerable risk, since gaining a new one is by no means something to be counted on. Especially since 'drawing the sword' will require at least one unit of some significance (i.e. a chief, thegn, hero or knight, for instance). Other units will still have a chance, especially if one can line up a line of 'expendable' potential 'takers' (i.e. take successive hits on the unit in the same turn) - but most will fail.

Hey Morten! I've forgotten to compliment you on the map. :crazyeye: One of the coolest maps I've seen, it gives exactly the right feeling to the scenario. :goodjob: Did you do it yourself?

So players will have to protect their 'sword' spot, but can't occupy the square, or is it only if it's occupied by other player?

I guess we'll just have to see how it works in the game at some point....

Thanx man :) - Yes I did it myself, although the basic layout (except for the eastern parts) is based on a map by the Dutch geographer Ortelius, who made a map of the North (including the northern domains, Iceland and Vinland) in the 1500's AD.

Yes - any other unit than a barbarian on the spots will prevent the events from creating the unit. Preferably one will want to keep the king for as long as possible. Rarely will it be necessary to protect the spots for the stones - even an invader (at least when played by a human) will be interested in the opportunity to 'draw the sword'... - but the 'swords' will need protection, if they cannot immediately be 'taken'...

BTW, Gary, you're up next ;)

Lot's of text to read!

@PE: could be. I've only taken out the 'solo game' kings. Been kind of looking forward to utilizing my king the way you guys have suggested.

GAME: counter-attacks against Heathen 'Rape & Plunder' raids result in the acquisition of Praha and Aix-la-Chapelle to the German crown.

Sorry I have not played for so long. The auto-notification has stopped working for this thread for me. Thanks for the reminder, DoM!

Veteran Drakkar sinks 10% Danish Drakkar, and is reduced to 70% (near Whitby)

Colchester bribed out: The local Viking Chief, Sihtric, takes British Gold (82 pieces) and accepts baptism. We are not sure which was the most persuasive, the Gold or Our Lord, but we have our suspicions....;)

Lord Sihtric came over to the Christian side, along with his personal retinue, two fine Drakkars and a Knarr (although one Drakkar is laid up for repairs at the moment and it will be some time before it can be ready for sea). He also taught our craftmen the secret of Shipbuilding, which one day will be very useful for the Navy that the King plans to establish....

Norvik, abandoned by the Danes, was also reoccupied, and runes found that hint at the method by which the Danes inspire their fearsome Berserker warriors....We are going to try dropping some mushrooms into the soup of our biggest and dumbest warriors...:D

Church plate sold to raise funds for our Smiths, who hope to produce the first sample of Chainmail next season. If they do, and it is as good as they promise, the smithys will soon be working day and night to clothe our warriors...

The Danes having been, for the moment at least, expelled from England, our attention turns to the Norse fouling our Corinsh lands....

We have Shipbuilding and Berserkers to offer to our Frankish, Scottish and even German friends. We will only do this if you ask us, since new techs will slow your other research down a bit.

We should have Chainmail next move. All of our techs are free to our Scottish and Frankish allies, if they want them, and for sale very reasonably to the Germans.

The Franks stumble upon scrolls of unknown knowledge... the secret of Tributal Taxes.

Frankish monks also finally gave a concert in the Cathedral of Rheims, introducing a new kind of music, which will be performed along with church services in our churches. This Liturgical Chant makes the message of the gospels more enjoyable to the public, and the services of our churches will be more attractive.

Congratulations to king Alfred on the effective campaign to preach the word in East Anglia... :D - The Franks will be most interested in hearing more on this new Anglo-Saxon type of armour.

In respect of the fierceness of the Scottish people, King Olav offers Mac Alpin a cease fire agreement.

While we acknowledge the honor in which this offer is made, we cannot simply forgive the past transgressions the invaders have imposed upon us. The only way peace will be had is if the Norse Invaders leave any and all cities that are on our continents. Until then the Scottish people will continue to fight to their last breath.

The Scots welcome any gifts of support from our Anglo-Saxon friends, or anyone else who wishes to send support as well.

Otherwise, the Scottish people take this time to reinforce their positions.

Olav accepts the Scottish rejection of the cease fire proposal. So be it then.
Scottish monks raided on the Island west of Oban.

Other Events from around the world:

Monks arrive in England to chronicle recent events.
Norse vikings raid Normandy.
Pilgrims report terrible portents in the sky over Nidaros! Peasants flee in panic!

Danes

This year a new danish fleet arrived to the coast of Brittania. When they heard the news of what happened to Norvik the Danes got mad and made a full scale assault on the city. The fightings got so intense that the city was raied to the ground and is no more. After the battle another Danish ship arrived with an emissary from King Sven himself. A Cease-fire agreement was offered to the Anglo-Saxons and we're eagerly awaiting the reply. We hope that you can agree to this even though we raised Norvik. A cease-fire agreement is also offered to the Franks.

Btw Morten, when the next version is finishes, feel free to post it here somewhere so we can try it out in single player. At least I want to.
