Happy International Worker's Day! Currently, communists and socialists and workers are doing parades.

And if you happen to live in country that desperately doesn't want to talk about commies.. happy day of the flowers!

I used to hate this day, because the communists made everyone participate. But now that I'm actually older and can choose to celebrate this day of my own accord - I think it's important to. Workers often get the shaft - especially in developed countries like the U.S. It's good to highlight the plight of the average worker.

Yeah, I like it too. And it's good for workers to have a day to celebrate themselves. While I didn't find it especially useful during the 90's, I'm convinced that both the day and workers' solidarity will be increasingly important in the coming decades. I didn't agree with all the speeches and paroles, but I'm very happy that they're there. :)

Interestingly enough, I even saw a small group carrying red flags with hammer and sickle symbols in the parade in Oslo. I'm happy that I can smile over the quaintness of it, as the Communist dictatorships are mostly gone by now. I don't want to completely write off proper Socialism, but it really needs a decent implementation to be viable again.

Social Democracy is pretty awesome, but it does require a healthy organisation among workers, and today is a pretty good day to celebrate it all.

So happy 1. of May to you all! :)

Norway is wayyy ahead of Canada in the "social democracy" department.. and I won't even mention the U.S...

We need workers parades and pushes for workers rights on this continent more than ever, but everyone seems to be content with the status quo... ..

Time to celebrate the impending arrival of summer.

May day is best day

I didn't go to see the parade this year :(

Well, among the overseas Vietnamese community, if there's the slightest whiff of a hint that you're a commie you'd get a giant mob of thousands of angry Vietnamese at your door within hours swarming to remove your filthy commie evil.

But, uh, happy May Day anyways.

Gotta love expats. Parts of Dorchester and a couple neighborhoods in Atlanta fly the South Vietnamese flag 365 days a year.

Once upon a time my brother worked as an assistant to a member of our city's council. They were planning to do a sister city thing with a city in Vietnam. Word got out and a gazillion Vietnamese from around the region went to protest. My parents freaked out - not because they didn't want it to happen (like I've always said, my family is pretty chill with these sort of things), but because they were afraid if word got out my brother was involved it would not only cause people to start harassing him, but also everyone else in the family (which was not good as they are heavily involved in th Vietnamese Buddhist community). So he had to keep his head low while the councilman took a lot of dung and mud and the thing never passed.

Oh well. I mean, I definitely understand those feelings, big part of the overseas Vietnamese identity after all, but some folks really ain't so chill about it all. I still see anti-commie protests every now and then when I go to Little Saigon. Thankfully virtually nobody within my close family is like that. Even the ones that would've suffered or have suffered the most under the commies.

Just tell 'em you're a Social Democrat and they won't scratch you. Otherwise, how can you explain the existence of the Bulgarian Com-*, pardon, Socialist Party?

*Which, as a bonus, was initially called the Bulgarian Worker's Party.

Because this thread is obviously about how many people commies kill, huh?

You wanted to discuss the joys of Communism. We are just mentioning their all time greatest hits!

A "Giant Leap Forward" is one of the all time greatest, but you still can never go wrong with the classic Red Commies and "The Great Purge" that one never seems to get old!

No, I was actually celebrating the day in which we express our solidarity between workers.

Not counting how many people communism killed.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot about the forced labour camps. Good point!

Who can forget about those? Definitely not Ukrainians and Tatars. :goodjob:

Stand up and show your solidarity! Brother's in chains! United we stand - literally.
