Apparently, it derives from suibhne meaning "pleasant". That does not describe my dads mother. My ex was told to check the gene pool before having children with me
My family came to Maryland from Yorkshire, and as I understand, much of that part of Britain was overrun with Irish about 1200 years ago, so probably yes. I think I have Irish blood from another part of my family as well.
Our family is mostly English, with some Germans and Cherokee. I used to think that my great-great grandfather was Italian, but then I found out that the family name Cato is actually usually Scottish. (I think most of the English on that side of the family is from northern England, my mom's maiden name Norton would suggest. I've also noticed that my granddad's accent sounds less Southern U.S. than Northern English, after having a few British teachers do impressions of the accents of different regions of the country.) I suppose that means I have Irish blood if you go back far enough.
