Did anyone here ever have to climb the rope to ring a bell on the ceiling in high school? I keep seeing it on TV, but no one I know has ever done it in high school

I never done that in my High School Gym class. Im guessing its an urban myth.

Yes. We had a 50 feet roof in our gym. In fact, I completed ALL of the rope tasks, and about 1/2 of the rings tasks. That was about the top two things I could do back in the day. ;)

we don't have it. I bet it was something they had to do a while ago, thats why the old writers use it ;)

We had one too. High School was probably 50 feet - though I don't recall ever doing it there. I did, however, use a rope (probably 25-35 feet) in Elementary school. That's right - at like age 10ish I was climbing to the top of the gymnasium. I remember being able to easily climb it (there were no knots in the rope to aid you), but I was scared to death of heights (I made it anyway, just slid down the rope fast - yeah, I had bad rope burn). My guess is too many people would fall. Those mats were never as soft as they were made out to be, and I doubt anyone would erect a netting, like what a trapeeze artist would have.

I wouldn't call myself "old" either. This was probably stopped in the 90's.

We had to climb half way up a 200 foot rope (100 Feet) start swaying on our rope so we could swing off of it indian jones style onto another 200 foot rope, climb that rope, ring the bell at the top, install a new sealing tile, then recite the constitution. We also had to do it in 2.5 minutes or less (not counting reciting the constitution time). Those who did not accomplish this failed gym and thus did not graduate.

I guess to answer your question, no we did not simply have to climb a rope and ring a bell. That kind of mockary of physical education is not tollerated in the 48th or so most populated state.

We also had to run a marathon.

Well what else are you going to do in North Dakota? :p

My middle school had one, but it just hung from the roof. No one ever used it. The only thing it was good for was creating an obstacle when we used to play basketball.

Luckily, no. I was killer at running and curl-ups, and I was okay at push-ups, pull-ups, and sit and reach, but I would have sucked so hard at climbing rope.

Did i mention we had to slay a lion?
:D

On serious note, I actualy lived / live in one of the few places in the state where there is stuff to do so that really isn't much of a problem.

We have rope activities (including a full high-ropes course behind the school), but no rope hanging in the gym on which you might climb to ring a bell.

high school, we did that in the 1st grade at my elementary school and we had a mat as thin as paper to "protect" us in case we fell. Of course it was voluntary, but all us boys did it because no one wants to look like a wimp. To my knowledge no one ever fell from the rope

we had it in elematary school, i could get about 1 grab up (hey i am was weak :D), but never in Jr. High or high school

and for the record i edited it before i saw your post

Na, at my new school we dont have that but at my old school we didnt have a rope to the ceiling of the gym. We had the tower, 200ft high with a very slippery rope on it every day we had to climb

My school didn't have a rope we had to climb. They tortured us instead with things like the Fitness Test. Those weren't fun. They included alot of running.
