About how far will an average man walk if he walks for 15 hours? Really would like to know. Can't explain more- sorry.

A secret mission eh?

It depends largely on walking speed and how long you can without resting.

The average speed is about 5 km/h (3 mph) depending on fitness and terrain. You will definitely slowly decrease in speed as time goes by. I'd estimate about 30 to 40 miles factoring in breaks and slowdown at optimum conditions.

If you are considering doing this, keep hydrated and eat some salt every once in a while for the sweat. Unless you are in a desperate situation I recommend against an amateur doing that. Unless you absolutely must be there by walking within 15 hours it can wait till the next day.

Honestly, if you try walking 15 hours straight - you won't be walking the next day at all. You might not get through the whole 15 hours, for that matter.

IIRC, even the USMC doesn't consider a day's march to be much above 20 miles a day. Granted, that's army marching (vanguards, scouting, etc) so is a bit slower, but even so...

(IF I were crazy enough to actually try this out, and had the endurance to go through it, I can do 4 to 5 MPH, so would do anywhere between 60 to 75 miles in a day. But that is rethorical, as I don't; realistically if I were to go on long-term hiking, I'd expect to average around 12 to 30 miles a day depending on terrain.)

If you look at say, Lord of the Rings, this is about how the characters do as well.

Me specifically? I walk at a brisk pace, around 4 mph, so 15 hours at that rate and Id've covered around 60 miles. I don't know how long I could keep that pace, though, but I've done it for at least ten miles.

You guys are in luck. I got high and created a graph that will answer this burning question. I had all sorts of other things to do... but I somehow ended up making this graph. So whatever

5 km/h is a pretty average walk, so I figured 3 km/h would be a good lower bound for the "average man".

So, basically, the average walker is somewhere in between the blue line (very slow) and red (very fast). That's somewhere between 46km and 130km.

The midpoint of that is 88km, which is 54.7 miles.

So I would have to say that the average man could walk around 50 - 55 miles in 15 hours, at an average pace. You could walk more if you walked faster, but that wouldn't be average.

Of course if you include breaks and such, I would halve that and say 25 miles (40km). People can be lazy.

Yeah, but you're assuming that people don't get tired.

The romans expeced to march 20 miles a day, and that is inluding heavy gear, and making/breaking camp. An average person (that is fit), should be able twice that.

That book is great, read it years ago. Felt exhausted just from reading it, I don't think Ill ever read it again.

I think the average pace is 6 km/h, at least for the first few hours, but let me tell you, energy levels drop off immensly without good sleep and food.

Like 1 day without them, and youre the shadow of your former self.

I think a normal man is able to walk about 45-48 km... without any luggage. But you can't walk for 15 hours in a row because you're not going to walk at all after that.

But don't forget the Romans that actually marched like this, though with heavy gear, were only young and strong people trained actually to do this kind of physical effort. I doubt an (edit: average) man can walk twice as much as that.

When I've been hiking for a while and my feet are worn in I'll do 35-40 miles in 8-10 hours, every day. That includes carrying food, tent, rucksack etc., and stopping for meals.
If it was a one-off with food available but nothing to carry maybe I could dash along for Plarq's 75 miles, but that's in optimal conditions.
An average man, taken straight from living a soft western life will not manage to continue for 15 hours because his feet will be too sore, and probably his legs.
Of course there are also things like terrain to be considered. Hills, mountains and boggy valleys take more time than flat plains. Roads make for quick walking, but make your feet sore a bit more quickly.
The average man is not very fit, rather lazy, and ill-equipped. I doubt he'd manage more than 25-30 miles.
