How is your EU3 Game going?

Does that apply in general? So, is it usually infeasible to annex a nation via diplomacy in general?

Also I am having serious money issues and am being forced to raise the Treasury slider to avoid bankruptcy - good ways to raise money?

EDIT: I noticed that the way you spoke of reputation it sounds as if it's better if it's lower. Is that right?

Reputation (or Infamy) refers to the reputation of your nation as bloodthristy warmongers. So yes it's better if it's lower.

Does that apply in general? So, is it usually infeasible to annex a nation via diplomacy in general?

You mean diplo-annexing a vassal? They're more likely to accept if they're small and share the same religion and culture group as you, and the longer they have been your vassal the more likely they'd accept annexation. Otherwise it's not very feasible, and it's often simpler to just DoW them.

Also I am having serious money issues and am being forced to raise the Treasury slider to avoid bankruptcy - good ways to raise money?

Not always. Minting slows your research and can increase inflation, which increases the cost of everything you do. You should get the National Bank idea or a Master of the Mint advisor; either will allow you to mint a little without increasing inflation. Otherwise, minting should only be done sparingly, while making sure you don't have too high inflation. 5% is acceptable in most cases, 10% is too high, 20% will cripple you.

Ideally, you should be able to pay for all your monthly expenses with the big annual income you get at the start of the year, and save the spare cash to invest in things like Workshops that improves your economy tremendously or merchants if you're a trading power.

Bankruptcy is very bad. Avoid at all cost.

One message you probably don't want to see in an EU3 game -

"Castille has inherited the throne of England!".

In my current game Castile looks like it's about to inherit Portugal. It's not as bad, and I guess more common than Castile inheriting England. But still.

Heh, I was just making my way in the world as Burgundy when France declared war and promptly annihilated me :(. Perhaps I should have made more of an effort to keep that alliance with England...

Do earnings not inflate with the costs?

I've just noticed that, but isn't this system a little flawed? Any ways of knowing my annual income before it takes place?

How do I invest in merchants? Don't they just turn up?

Wasila

You send merchants to centers of trade: lump sum to send the merchant there, but the merchant sends you back a portion of the profits, which are rolled into your year-end income. You can set the game to do this for you automatically.

Whereupon Castile is faced with a series of rebellions throughout England due to lacking cores there, and eventually ends up losing it anyway. It's actually easier to deal with that than it is to deal with a Castile-England PU. But yes: the interim is not fun.

Actually, it's infinitely worse, because Castile will core on Portugal upon inheritance, while it wouldn't on England.

Heh, I was just making my way in the world as Burgundy when France declared war and promptly annihilated me :(. Perhaps I should have made more of an effort to keep that alliance with England...

Yes, beware of France. If you're near them, they will attack you. I imagine you're also holding French cores, too.

Do earnings not inflate with the costs?

No.

I've just noticed that, but isn't this system a little flawed? Any ways of knowing my annual income before it takes place?

Yes. Hover your mouse over the income icon in the top bar. Also, the budget screen shows a summary of your income to the left.

There are tooltips all over the place. If there's a slider or a button or an icon you can always find more information about it by hovering your mouse over it.

Especially when you think about devising a plan to attack England the previous "turn" (few days).

Anyway, one thing I noticed is that, if Cornwall gains independence, it tends to be annexed by the Ottomans or Mamluks.

Don't inheritances come along with free cores on the inherited provinces?
I think it's changed in DW now. You only core in provinces of your culture group. I think.
You only core in provs of your culture group in the most recent HttT patch. In DW they kept that and added autocores for inheritances of territories in the HRE by a member state of the HRE.

I never actually checked - but I should think so. Given up on that and I'm currently working on uniting the British Isles, although I might restart as France. Is there any way to get some easy CBs on all the Irish states, though? The reputation hit from taking them on one by one seems serious.

Yes. Hover your mouse over the income icon in the top bar. Also, the budget screen shows a summary of your income to the left.

I get it. That's confusing. So what are the annual costs that appear in the tooltip? Is there a breakdown at all - I assume that the one in the budget window applies only to monthly costs.

But this doesn't apply in IN, right?

Also, is it true that infantry is essentially a waste of time in the early game?

As England, you should get a "Conquer Ireland" mission early on in the game. You'll get CBs on all the Irish states, and they should fall easily.

So what are the annual costs that appear in the tooltip? Is there a breakdown at all - I assume that the one in the budget window applies only to monthly costs.

The one in the budget window are monthly costs. If you check the tooltip for the coins icon at the top though, you can see how much money you are gaining/losing per month, the money you will have at the end of the year, and the money you'll gain annually.

Also, check the ledger (graph icon at the bottom right hand corner of the screen IIRC). There are a few pages of economic stats there. That should tell you what you want to know. Usually though, I find that the tooltip and the budget screen gives me enough information.

But this doesn't apply in IN, right?

Nope. In IN you get cores on any country you inherit.

Also, is it true that infantry is essentially a waste of time in the early game?

Oh, they're not useless. They're much cheaper than cavalry, can assault a fort and can still be a useful component of your force. However, cavalry are generally much more powerful in the early game. You can rely on a pure cavalry force, which will beat any infantry force of similar size. In the mid to late game infantry becomes much more important.

Nope. In IN you get cores on any country you inherit.

IN is the version I have, so yes, that's cores in Spain and England! HTTT is only purchasable online, but I'd much rather have a CD/DVD... Oh well, I suppose I could burn it onto a CD/DVD.

EDIT: Speaking of which, I just found out about the EU3:DW expansion (yeah, I know, it's been announced for awhile now). I've seen some of the box graphics say CD-ROM, but I don't see where you buy the CD-ROM version (all of the links say download). The maps do look gorgeous, though! I love "Conquer the World as Ryukyu" achievement. I read a thread like that on the EU3 forums.

I think people - "people" here meaning "tuore" - have pretty much decided that a Ryukyu WC is impossible in DW.

This is much more true in IN than it is in HttT, and more true in HttT than it is in DW.

Just picked up this game recently. I've tried it a few times and am loving it, even though I haven't made it to 1450 yet. I keep learning new things I want to do differently and restarting (from scratch, not saves).

I've been playing Castille every game so far, and once I haev most of the basics down I'll try a more complicated nation.

This game is seriously what I've been looking for since my civ5 letdown; AND I GOT IT FOR $6.00 US (complete + HTTT)!!!! Waiting on patches/balancing and my own learning of game mechanics to pick up DW, which I will undoubtedly get eventually.

In my new game as Naples, I declared war on Janina.

Achaea declares war on me, honoring an alliance. I look at its low-morale 2,000-man army and laugh. Another province to annex.

Next thing I know, Milan and Bohemia declare war on me, milan honoring an alliance with Achaea, Bohemia honoring its obligation as the HRE to assist its members, I guess. Ridiculous.

PQBWc.jpg

Oh yeah, also Aquiea is at war with me too. For Achaea's alliance, I guess. It's nuts.

Not shown in the screenshot; few weeks later, Venice hops in the fray and sinks my entire fleet

It appears as though there are sever risks for declaring war! Sounds realistic to me. ;) I have heard that cascading alliances are a little broken right now though, so I won't debate that it could cause problematic gameplay.
