How is your EU3 Game going?

Hello. I recently got this game and started getting into it. Never played any of the other Paradox games. I think I have the basic idea of how the game plays out having watched a couple of vids, but I have two questions I wasn't able to find answers to.

1. The "you discovered X land" messages. Are these random and/or time-based? Do you have any control on when or how you discover new lands?

2. Where can I go for a better breakdown of economics? I am losing 11.2 a year and I can't figure out why. The menu under the shield icon in the top left doesn't seem to help me understand.

Edit: Of course the exact moment I post the question I find the additional menus on the ledger by pushing the continue tab. I guess this is what the critics meant by menus inside of menus? Scratch question 2, I think I can figure that out. But question 1 remains open.

Either you discovered them personally with an Explorer or Conquistador, or its been 50 years (by default) since someone in your tech group discovered it.

If you use explorers/conquistadors recruited like generals when you have the "Quest for the New World" national idea, they can explore Terra Incognita (fog of war) causing this message to pop up. Otherwise, the knowledge of these provinces will naturally spread to other countries after 25-75 years.

Thanks for the quick replies. One more quick one: Do vassals count towards the research cost increase due to empire size? Or is it similar to Civ5's puppet system and social policies where they add some bonus gold without affecting the research cost?

The latter as far as I know, as I've had a few games as Austria and the like with mega-empires built solely on vassals, but a small central empire. Such games often have me up in the top near tech.

Could be wrong of course, but I think that's how it works.

Here is my Poland empire. I'm played slightly further on so a bit more of the horde land has been colonised and I've nearly finished regaining stability after completing the military modernisation (the revolts were not particularly fun considering that I had a weak legitimacy king as well). Lithuania has been in a personal union from the start of the game and the Teutonic Order, Croatia and Bosnia are vassals. Spain are the richest nation in the world.

The main question is where should I go next? (I have 0 ships currently)

Unless you go with a Russo- or Sino- style nation of tech backwardness but raw army size, there's not much else you can do from here I don't think. Not much you really need to either, of course, but...

Honestly I originally only wanted to take the area around Crimea and maybe up to Samara for the gold and then go south or west.

I think the problem was that I went after Hungary first and took my time diplo annexing Moldovia. As Lithuania stayed in the Personal Union and I didn't have a land border with the Golden Horde it meant that neither of us was at war with GH except at the start. This meant that the Russian countries were continually crushed by the Horde so by the time I took Samara the Russian countries were in a significantly worse position and more likely to be wiped out by GH and Sweden/Scandinavia. I think I had one war with Tver and that was my only involvement in the region.

Ming doesn't usually collapse without foreign intervention.

Either by force-releasing states, or massive war exhaustion causing rebels, who aren't defeated when the Ming army is on the front lines instead.

In my games Ming has usually at some point in time had a massive amount of rebels, some of which are cantonese nationalists that ends up with an independent Wu in the south. But I've always played as europeans, and never paid much attention to the situation in Asia, so you're probably right.
