How is your Victoria Game going?

Meh. I tried playing Two Sicilies trying to go for early unification.

Things began well as my industry was doing pretty well for the early game. But then begins the most frustrating series of events. I can't dislodge any of the great powers from any of the Italian minors (I could only get Tuscany). I thought fighting Austria to sphere them would be a good idea. But no. Not even with unified Germany as my ally.

Germany had done a number on France, taking Elsass and Franche-Comte. But then, right as I was going to declare war on Austria, France declares war on Germany to retrieve Franche-Comte. At the time, Austria was allied with France so I figured I could try to get some spheres on both sides. But no.

Having earlier annexed Tunisia, France sent their Algerian army there. It was a pretty big stack; about 30,000. My military, in total, was only 60,000. So I had to sail half of my army there while the other half fended off the Papists. I won the first battle, but France had a second stack in Algeria. That stack beat my ass into the ground.

So I retreat from Tunisia and look back into Italy. Since Austria was busy fighting Germans to the north, I decided to sneak into Lombardia. I send 30,000 troops to Lombardia. They managed to capture about six provinces before an Austria stack of about 25,000 came in.

Now, I had the upper hand here, as this was clearly a mobilized stack (all infantry) and I had all of my non-mobilized military up there.

And they won.

And they kept winning.

And I rage quitted.

1) how to military?
2) what good mods are there? :p

Man it's tough uniting the German empire! There were many times where I thought I wouldn't be able to come out of a war with Austria alive but I somehow managed to pull it off. Incidentally I formed the German empire 2 months after the real one was formed after I fought France for it's little corner.

Not sure if this is the right place for it, but there's no dedicated V2 thread and I didn't think I should start a new one for it.

I'm thinking of getting Victoria 2 for Mac through the Mac App Store, but I'm not sure I'd be able to run it properly.

I've got a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.6.8, 4 GB of RAM, and an Intel Core 2 Due processor with 2.53GHz.
My graphics card is a NVIDA GeForce 9400M and I have 256 MB of VRAM. Would this be sufficient to run Victoria 2?

I run it smoothly on less, so yeah.

None as this computer has an integrated graphics card and thus shares video storage with the main RAM. You'll be fine.

Ah, cool. Thanks for that, much appreciated. Confound my Macbook, I can't run any good games I want without paying through the nose. :(

I like that Wyoming is Confederate in Crezth's game. Seems fairly random. And that one Swedish area in north-central Siberia.

USA, December 1858: Washington colonization was allowed to the Brits, and Texas peacefully entered the Union after proving they could deter the Mexican empire. Not much for any kind of Nationalism or Destiny, the USA allowed Mexico to keep much of the Western territories. The great democracy chose to focus on an industrialized, laissez-faire, peaceful, religious society.

Despite many attempts at lowering consciousness on the issue of slavery, the great divide in opinion on slavery brought an early Dredd Scott (about 2 to 4 years early) and towards the end of 1858, two massive revolts happened simultaneously----a predictable confederate uprising of pro-slavery states, and an unpredicted northern revolt in favor of anarcho-liberal groups against the conservative rulership. Reforming voting rights and placing republicans in power did nothing to prevent a DOUBLE REVOLUTION, 1858.

Other than I haven't really modernized the army beyond building lots of Dragoons, I think this will be cake to clean up since none of the forces are very well organized. Thankfully, Florida is a Union state with a large army. Amusingly, South Carolina is anarchist, not confederate.

EDIT: I was right. The rebellions were put down easily. However, the anarchists came back again in force in 1861, and again in 1865. Overall 1858 - 1865 could be described as a time of troubles.

Not sure if the Union will survive this. I'm guessing it's all about the ideal of equality more than all the material grace that everyone, even the slaves (slaves getting 100% of luxury needs) are getting.

Picked up my Russia game again, remembered why I stopped playing V2 on this computer: it is slow! Up to 1870's, I've colonized a little in the Pacific, industrialization is slow. Survived one massive coalition war only to be drug into another--France and Austria are pretty close allies, I'm allied with the USA and Prussia. Great Britain is doing its own thing, building an empire, whacking Venezuela, the usual.

What is unusual is the string of bankruptcies as the result of these wars. My finances have been terrible but salvageable with 100% taxes and tariffs. However, several minor German states have declared bankruptcy, followed by Prussia, France, the USA, and Great Britain. Don't know if I should be encouraged or fearful.

The minors are going bankrupt because interest exceeded max income, the GPs are going bankrupt because they ran out of cash to borrow

I'm amazed because now France has gone bankrupt as well. Half of the (current) great powers have gone bankrupt in the last decade. And now Bavaria and temporarily Hannover were great powers. Fortunately, Italy has dethroned the Hannoverians. :)

Credit is extremely hard to come by in recent updates. Aristocrats are no longer cash cows.

Tell me about it! I'm surprised I haven't bankrupted yet.

I think the rapid bankruptcies have slowed down German unification--the NGF hasn't formed yet and I'm in the 1890s. I don't think it will be possible at this point, given that Denmark is in my sphere and Prussia is a close ally.

Actually, one of the hardest parts of NGF is removing Saxony from the Austrian sphere.

It's pretty easy if you declare war on Austria on day one. You'll lose ground initially but you should be able to push them back and get hegemony or whatever over Germany once you make peace. In my experience, France will ally with you a lot against Austria.

Since I don't play the game 24/7, I'm still playing a vanilla 1.4 PDM game, and money is no issue. I've only seen one minor power declare bankruptcy and it's the 1870's. :p

It's the AHD XP that causes it.
