The USA is right now in its peak. From what I have observed, most superpower last for more than 100 years. The USA only became a superpower after WW2, which give us at least a good 50 years left as the sole superpower. After 50 years things can be different, but most superpower lost its position slowly. So there will be another 100 years before the USA can possibly fall into ruins.

You mean I will die a slave? Damn you.

The reign of America will last for no less than eight-hundred thousand billion years......So sayeth Buddha Squirrel.......

Seriously, I honestly can't see America disolving this century. Even in hundreds of years.

I think nothing shows that USA will be in crisis. Destroying democracy or move to another way is highly possible when I see what doing Mr. Bush and other people in USA. But USA hasnt huge rebellious parts and unhappy inhabitants like Soviet Union before 15 years...So its possible in future, but nothing shows it...

This is scary, I was thinking about this last night before I even had the slightest whim of this thread.

I believe that the United States from founding to dissolution will last for 500 years. So roughly 1776-2276, we have about 270 years left.

I believe there will be a series of natural disasters, hurricanes hitting the southeast and northeast, earthquakes and fires out west, floods in the midwest, all preceded by a major drought all over the country. Other countries will take advantage of our hardships and invade, our allies will still be England and Canada who will try to intervene and stop this, but they will fail.

Wheres the empire?! Every republic turns into an empire, THEN collapses - It happened in Rome and it happened in Star Wars. Can someone please vote the next competant president some emergency powers or something?

China is very, very different from the USA.

To name a few--unicultural for the most part, uniethnicity, a far greater population density (and this does matter), a history of uniting themselves time and time again--something the USA does not have. We have only expanded again weaker powers, never truly united our land through blood. Sorry, the Civil War does not count.

When you show me a Warring States USA come out of the dark ages, then maybe I'll contemplate the possibility that it could ressurect. But the USA has more in common with Rome than China.

While in principle I agree with you (that US history has many parallels to that of Rome), why doesn't the US Civil War "count"?

Why is it always America? Why not France ;)
While you probably intended that as a joke, it's a perfectly good question.

France has been around for.....hell, I have no idea. A thousand years, at least. Though it's in a different form now than it used to be, in the sense of its society and government.

Which point in France's history could be called a "fall" if any, seeing as how France is still there? :D

What does America have going for it, that other countries do not have, that will allow it to survive indefinatly?

Work ethic? At least for now, I dunno where it's going though.

According to the CIA factbook, France is around since 486 with the unification by Clovis, so it's 1519 years old.

Only a few countries are seen as older:
San Marino 301 AD
Ethiopia (at least 2000 years old)
China : 221 BC

However, I find the CIA dates a bit abritrary. For instance, Russia is listed as 14 years old, when it get it's independance from USSR in 1991

Japan: 660 BC

Well, the "age" of particular country according to CIA is the age of it's present state form.

For example the Czech republic is 12 years old :crazyeye: That's because the Czechoslovakia was split in 1993. In fact, the Czech people live in Bohemia and Moravia from the 7th or 8th century, when the Slavic tribes arrived there.

First kingdoms were created in Moravia and Bohemia in the 9th and 10th century respectively. So the Czechs as a nation are about 1000 years old.
