I have an idea (CFC OT Member of the Year Poll.)

Would it be something if we had a CFC OT member of the year? What happens is members could nominate another member (not themselves!) for the award (PM to a nice moderator who volunteers). Then they do some elimination stuff and then the final (private) vote. And whoever wins that will get a ... well I dunno. Bragging rights.

I hope that is considered at least a little bit.

Popularity contests are usually frowned upon at CFC. And it's not even Civ-related (being OT).

And the moderating team has no energy or motivation left to do this.

What if a nutral (sp?) member who would have not mess with the results volunteered to do that.

Just to point out...seems to be working without any issues with Mafia (which is not civ-related). Extending it to OT may not require as much moderator work as is probably anticipated.

This.

Also, aimee, please use the thread title option correctly, not as part of your first sentence. The thread title should be something like: CFC OT Member of the Year Poll.

But then we wouldn't know she had an idea.

Title changed.

Agreed. Not going to happen.

Thnk you/. I was going to chge it myself. But there would be a lot of ttypos.

Could I ask what the rationale behind allowing it in forum games and not elsewhere is?

Note: Simply having 'CFC OT Member of the Year Poll' is terribly vague and would be too much of a popularity contest, but I don't think it's the case that any attempt at community based positive feedback is invariably doomed to failure.

OT and the Civ GD forums are our main forums. In these traffic-heavy and clique-heavy areas, we will usually impose the strictest definition of the rules and most issues are discussed in staff and decisions made by consensus. Popularity votes are simply not going to happen in these areas, going by previous discussions.

For the smaller forums, where most often the atmosphere is more civilized, we will leave it to the local mods to decide if they want to allow it or not. Generally. Amongst other things.

I wasn't aware it was allowed in forum games.
I'm referring specifically to this (not saying that any random member voting thing is allowed):

Moderator Action: FYI, we mods talked about the Mafia Awards and decided it's ok as long as it doesn't become a (un)popularity contest. Don't mess it up.
I mean, I'm not arguing against not allowing simple popularity based threads. It makes perfect sense to not allow them. But a member based awards thingie is not necessarily a popularity contest (anymore than the mafia awards are 'popularity' based; DaveShack's comment here would imply that the staff are aware of the fact that not all of these things are simple popularity contests).

But what KD said makes sense.

I'm just arguing on the basis of the following:
downtown (in the Rules Discussion Group) said:
Mise wins. A system that promotes and rewards GREAT POSTING will do more to improve the forum, not to mention mod's workloads, than elaborate punishment schemes.

A positive community based voting awards thing could be a good way to do something in this vein. Discounting the mere idea as unfeasible doesn't strike me as the best approach. :)

I advocated for something similar to this years ago, and I'm still in favor of the idea of acknowledging good posting.

@Knight-Dragon: I'm one of the moderators of the Arts & Entertainment forum. If Plotinus agrees (being the other moderator), would your comment indicate you wouldn't mind if I was allowed to hold some kind of "good posting" award? (hypothetically, as I don't have any plans currently to do this; my future plans for A&E involve something a bit different).

Sure why not?

Though you might want to run your idea in detail with the admins first though.

My actual plans already have been run past the admins. They raised no objections, or at least none that I can't figure out a solution for.

My first question was purely hypothetical. So basically, if the moderators of the History forum wanted to run a "vote for the best post/thread/whatever" poll, that would be okay (yes, I know you're one of them and would probably never want to do this, but we are speaking hypothetically)? Just anywhere except OT and Civ V...

A Member of the Year? Umm, no thanks.

Could we do mod of the year instead? It could show which mod we think is doing the best work.

Within reason.

Like I said in the original post... Generally. Amongst other things.
