I wish to have multiple wives.

You people realize we're just having a little fun and indulging our sexist fantasies right? :D There's no way any of us could go for polygamy nowadays. Not within modern society, and because of the way our personalities have been wired.

I'm perfectly happy with just one. ;)

But that doesn't stop me from fantasizing about being an ancient Chinese noble and having a mini-harem of my own... :mischief: You get to do what you wish with the maids too. :groucho: After all, they were only slightly above being just property.

I certainly hope that people here would realize that by now. I can assure you that I don't want any feminist come barking through my door.

I am happy with one too, for the time being ;)

But what if your "different beliefs" said that it wasn't wrong to harm other people?
My point is that if you don't have objective standards of right and wrong, you will have anarchy.

Well my views don't harm others so I don't see your point. Tell me what is so wrong about having multiple wives or whatever?

Polygamy defeats the purpose of marriage. Sexual relations should ONLY occur between two people in a committed, long-term (ideally unless one dies but at least decades), MONOGAMOUS relationship. Sexual relations in a short-term relationship, or in multiple simultaneous relationships, is a foul abomination :nono: .

Some people argue that it is not human nature to mate for life; THIS is why society was forced to create the institution of marriage. If it were human nature to mate for life, marriage would not be needed.
But if you're talking mating for life, why are you okaying serial monogamy? If you advocated only having one partner ever, then although I disagree, I would respect your viewpoint as being consistent. But you're still allowing yourself to have relationships one after the other (even if they last for 10 years or more) which isn't "mating for life".

Also, what has "for life" got to do anything? If you favour "for life", surely multiple relationships for life would be better than having several one after the other.

If you are taking strictly about one-man-several-women, where those women can't have other relationships, I would agree.

But note that in modern society there exist plenty of people who practice multiple relationships (which can take many forms). It may or may not be true that most people are wired for monogamy, but it certainly isn't true for everyone. And I'm not talking about bizarre religious cults, but people who are no different to anyone else (except for the way they do relationships). It's more commonly known as polyamory, rather than polygamy, as the latter is confused with specifically marriage which of course isn't allowed.

All we need now is a thread saying that someone wishes to marry an animal and one that you can marry children and we have covered all things. :shakehead

Er, you forget to add something about marry "an old, fat, ugly, sexually impotent and one leg in the coffin but filthy rich spouse" part and marry a dead person.

That'll complete the list.

@mdwh
Hmm... polyamory. Whaddaya know. I learn a new term again.

Unfortunately it is the rare individual who manages to successfully bag the very first person he/she falls in love with, marries this person, and then live happily ever after until they die of old age.

The rest of us mortals aren't so blessed, and have to go through life trial and error like. It's not like we go through different relationships (one at a time of course) just for the heck of it.
