Let's play pretend.

Pretend you have a magic wand that, with one wave, would allow you to recreate the cult classic movie The Warriors with your own modern gangs of your own invention.

What gangs would you create?

The Bed-Stuy Hipsters? The Wolves of Wall Street? The Five Points Butchers?

Inspired by Roger the Shrubber's comment here.

That's as may be, Berzerker, but if you had a magic wand and that was its only power you're telling me you'd never wave it?

The Jimmy Rustlers of K-Street.

the Greeks and the Iranians

Why would you remake it?

What remake of a movie has been as good or better than the original?

Total Recall remade was terrible. Red Dawn remade was terrible. Conan remade was terrible. Taking of Pelham 123 not terrible but only OK. Death Race 2000 was a great campy classic, the remake was not terrible but only OK.

Many of those I would not consider a remake but more as a re-imagining of the movie, like the re-boot of James Bond. Taking "Yojimbo", a samurai movie, and re-making it as a gunfighting western as "A fist full of dollars" is fine as they are diverse enough. If it was also a samurai movie then that would be wrong.

The important part to me is to wait a long enough time, like 40+ years. Definitely not in the same generation. Scarface and 3:10 to Yuma are both similar to the originals but enough time has gone by that a remake is OK. Also they were great movies which makes up for a lot.

True Grit with John Wayne was a great classic western and one of his greatest, the remake paled in comparison.

Point #1: The wand is magic. It need not obey the laws of time and Hollywood.

Point #2: Remakes better than the original:
  • Point of No Return
  • 21 Jumpstreet
  • Dune
  • Dragnet
  • House of Cards
  • GI Joe
  • Naked Gun
  • Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
