Government Ideology: Neo-Imperialist Directionism
Power Base: Military
Legitimacy: Elective
Centralization: Hegemony
Economic Liberalism: 75%
Abridged History: The city-state of Paradip took advantage of its favorable trading location and gradually built up a power base, conquering or leasing lands around the Bay of Bengal and filling them with military bases and trading posts. Gradually this economic dominance transformed into political dominance, and soon a loose confederation formed. About 40 years ago Neo-Imperialists launched a coup in Paradip, sparking a brutal civil war that ended in favor of the Imperialist faction and resulted in Orissa moving from a coalition-type government to a more hegemonic system. 15 years ago a democratic-minded ruler gained power in Orissa, and gradually moved the state from a dictatorial system to a more representative one.
Description of Society: The people of Orissa place a high value on trade and economic success, as that is what led to their extreme growth. The military, and anything that makes the military more effective, such as education or scientific research, is also highly respected. They tend to more accepting of genetic engineering than is normal.

Abridged History: WWIII and the occupation of Greece by Turkey and Bulgaria for ten years caused a collapse of order in Greece. However, the Greek people did not give up and after a longer and bloody guerrilla war that lasted 10 years, the occupiers where defeated and forced to leave the country. Immediately after the liberation, a unity government was formed to deal with immediate problems while the major Greek parties that dominate now Greece emerged: the center-right "National Radical Union", the centrist "Centrist Union" and the leftist "United Democratic Left". In the first elections of liberated Greece, the "National Radical Union" won the elections. Since then, the "National Radical Union" and the "Centrist Union" have been alternating in power. Right now, the "National Radical Union" is on power.

Description of Society: It is a democratic and free society, where freedom of speech and human rights are ensured. There is some corruption and rich businessmen do have some influence on political affairs, but compared to other states it is the people who decide who will be on power, as elections are free. However, the two major parties, the "National Radical Union' and the "Centrists Union", while bitter enemies who polarize national elections, differ little in terms of practical policy, as their main differences lie in the fact that the "National Radical Union" uses a more nationalistic rhetoric while the "Centrists Union" uses a more anti-corruption rhetoric. The "United Democratic Left" usually polls 10% in elections and has a small but loyal electorate and little influence.

Government Ideology: Republicanism (however there are many ideological groups within the country, see the society description and later RP)
Power Base: Corporate
Legitimacy: Democracy
Centralization: Hegemony
Economic Liberalism: 95% [?]

Abridged History: Due to the dementia and other mind effecting diseases effecting senior corporate , including the United Horizons Corporation, Australia suffered from a massive economic downturn in the 2040s. After a disastrous attempt to recoup the losses through loaning out their army, the country collapsed and entered a decades-long civil war. Eventually the mechanical monstrosities that were used to fight these wars turned on their masters, turning most of Australia into an unliveable hell-hole.

But upon the ruins of Brisbane, a large Arcology was built by the rich who managed to keep control of their AI. Why this city was spared by the machines is unknown, but many believe that it is because of the Sorcerer, an artificial intelligence heavily involved in the government somehow convinced the other AI to not attack. This mostly self-sustaining city (known officially as the Arcology but has many nicknames amongst the lower classes such as “Steeltown”, “Hell” or “Your Grave”). This city became a haven for those fleeing robot oppression, so the lower classes swelled in population and soon the bottom layers of the city turned into slums.

After decades of hiding, the government believes that they are ready to venture forth into the unforgiving Australian outback and reclaim the nation. Many wish to leave, but will they escape from the many dangerous things lurking below and above the Arcology?

Description of Society: The Arcology is nominally a democracy, but many things about it aren’t all that democratic. The rich elite can make or break a politician’s career on a whim, only the most experienced and influential politicians could survive the wraith of corporate. Additionally, the state of democracy in the lower classes isn’t great. It is easy to fall through the cracks in the system down there, some of the lowest classes wouldn’t be able to vote even if they wanted to. The ones who do vote often have their votes lost or miscounted (sometimes even “lost” or “miscounted”). The two-parties that exist, the Gears and the Stars, delegate most of their authority to the Sorcerer, an AI built to manage the Arcology. They very rarely overrule its’ decisions as it is usually correct. Still, democracy is not entirely dead in the Arcology, if the lower classes or other politically charged groups got organized they could make changes to the society and have done so in the past.

The Sorcerer takes a defacto executive role in the government due to the trust it is given. The Sorcerer has five massive “cores” that are semi-independent entities that exist to provide the Sorcerer with different perspectives and also serve as a redundancy system. The five cores are known as “Eternity-1”, “Kaleidoscope-2”, “Paradise-3”, “Merlin-4” and “Blue-5”. Very few people understand how these cores interact and what their purposes are, even the most experienced software engineers struggle to understand the highly-complex self-updating code that is the brain of the machine. But there is an extreme amount of faith put in the computer, very rarely has its’ predictions ended badly for the Arcology.

Factions Within the Arcology:

Major Political Parties:

Let’s rebuild Australia together
~Nationalist Party Motto

The Nationalist Party (Republicanism): The Nationalist Party is ruling party in the Arcology, owning 53 seats in the Legislature. They share very few serious differences in opinion with the Democratic Justice Party, both of them believe in keeping the system working as it currently is. The main ideological difference between the two groups is over recolonization policies, the Nationalist Party is traditionally more gung-ho about spending money on reclaiming the rest of Australia than the Democratic Justice Party is. This is a position that the Sorcerer agrees with, which is part of the reason that the Nationalists did so well last election.

Vote Democratic Justice the life of this city
~Democratic Justice Party election slogan

Democratic Justice Party (Republicanism): The Democratic Justice Party is the opposition party, recently losing their Prime Ministership to the Nationalist Party. Owning only 47 seats, they are licking their wounds and preparing for the next election cycle. What made them different to the Nationalists was the fact that they were opposed to rapid recolonization of Australia, however as this position is becoming more and more unpopular they may have to find a new niche to sand a chance next election.

Corporations: There are five major corporations, known as the Big Five, that dominate the Arcology, although two of them are fronts for transhumanist cults. They were the ones to provide the money and the resources needed for the construction of Arcology in the beginning. They are all in competition with each other, although they are not beyond forming a temporary alliance to pursue a mutual goal. The Big Five have their hands in everything, from food to organized crime, so as expected they wield a large amount of influence. Beyond the eternal quest for more money, the Big Five have various ideological goals, trying to build an Australia that meets their vision.

Humankind has always been curious, from the very first day we stepped down from the trees we have wondered, what was beyond that hill? What will we find if we sail across this river, this ocean? This desire stays with us still today. Although I pray that the horrors that have plagued our nation and the world in this last century will never repeat again, the devastation has given us an opportunity. There is a brave new world out there, thousands of people are once again feeling the urge to explore and discover. And we are in the perfect position to profit from their findings.
~CEO Edward Blackburn in a speech to shareholders

Australis Corporation [Neo-Imperialism]: The Australis Corporation is the largest and most powerful of the Big Five. They have successfully lobbied for the resettlement of Australia and have secured a large amount of contracts in relation to this. They are named after the concept of Terra Australis, the name of a hypothetical continent proposed in the classical era that Australia was named after.

Yes General, the senior partners share your concerns. The decisions made by the Sorcerer should be followed to the letter, the fate of our society should not be made by a group of soulless sycophants. Forgive me, I was being careless. Yes. Yes. Good. I look forward to it.
~Phone conversation made by a senior Unlimited Horizons Corporation executive to an unknown party.

Unlimited Horizons Corporation [Fascism]:

Oh how the mighty have fallen. The Unlimited Horizons Corporation used to control all of Australia, but now they are merely one of many organizations vying for control of the Arcology. Still, they are the second most powerful of the corporations, however they are opposed by both the Australis Corporation and Southern Cross Industries which is making things difficult for them. Their goals are one of the most ambitious of the corporations, they wish to take absolute control of the Arcology and return Australia to their unopposed rule. To make this possible they have started to ally themselves with hardliners in the military and the police force, to appease their new allies their mantra has taken a Fascistic tone, although with a larger focus on keeping order rather than the racial aspects of the ideology.

Southern Cross Industries [Federalism]: TL;DR: Corporation with the ultimate goal of returning Australia to the state it was before IU1.

Transhumanist Cults: TL;DR: These cults are exclusively for the very, very rich but they have a lot of money so they use that to influence people.

Cyber Vampires/Poly-Blanche Corporation [Visionary Thought]: TL;DR: The Poly-Blanche Corporation (formerly known as Blanche Polymers before it expanded into everything else) is one of the Big Five. It is a front for a Transhumanist Cult known on the street as the “Cyber Vampires”. They kidnap people in the lower classes and experiment on them with the ultimate goal of being able to upload their concisenesses into machines. Membership is entirely very rich people although they use their money and influence to further their agenda. Directly opposed to Purity/Xingjang Group.

Purity/Xingjang Group [Directionism/Monarchism]: TL;DR: The Xingjang group is one of the Big Five. It is also a front for another Transhumanist Cult that operates in a similar way to the Cyber Vampires except they use their victims in a quest to produce “the perfect child” who they believe will become the Emperor of the world.

Unwashed Masses: TL;DR: Political movements/cults that appeal to the poor. Has less money than the other groups but has wider appeal.

The Dysphoria (Unwashed Masses) [Separatism]: TL;DR: Disorganized group of people who want to leave the city.

Steam Union [Socialism] TL;DR: One of two socialist/communist movements in the city, the less violent and more superstitious one.

Free from Chains [Cult of Personality] TL;DR: The other socialist/communist movement, has become an ego trip for their leader who is known as “The Forman”

We Must Dissent [Purianism] TL;DR: People who think that being ruled by a robot is dumb.

Sandmen [Insurrectionist Anarchy] TL;DR: People who want to destroy the city and live life like it is in the rest of Australia (think Mad Max meets Terminator). Is by far the most violent group, they just want to watch the world burn.

New Dreamtime [Technogaianism] TL;DR: People who want to return to nature. Is a bit cultish, their movement follows what they think are the beliefs of the Aboriginal people but aren’t really.

All Faiths Church [Assimilationist] TL;DR: Extremist Assimilationists, they blackmail and threaten churches to join their own. Is mostly responsible for the highly superstitious Australian population.

While the rest of the world was embroiled in World War 3, western Africa was consumed in a massive civil war that lasted decades. The war never really had a clear end; rather the dozens of warring parties simply lost the will and capacity to continue fighting as manpower ran low, and the infrastructural and environmental destruction took its toll. The region was divided into city states, each controlled by independent militias or remnants of local governments.

This situation continued until after the turn of the century, though the city states were ever growing more intertwined economically and politically out of necessity. The damage from the civil war was profound, with great swaths of land made barren either from warfare or climate change. From the growing metropolises of Lagos and Abuja, ever needy from raw materials and foodstuffs, a push for the recreation of a trans-city state to regulate control and distribution of resources, leading to the two metropolises and some of the surrounding cities and towns declaring a confederation, dubbed the West African League. The League began as a loose confederation, with cities largely maintaining their own sovereignty, but as more and more cities and territories were drawn into the League, the larger the federal movement grew. The desire for a federal government grew both from the overstepping of larger cities on their neighbours’ natural resources, as well as the urban populations’ cry for more goods and food that they thought were being horded by rural territories.

Support for unification eventually grew to a boiling point, and a short but intense revolution, known as ‘the Movement’ resulted in the city states’ governments being completely taken over by the new federal government. Come 2190, the League is in no way the confederation its name implies, as each city’s government is just another arm of the central League Government.

Description of Society:
2yEVjVK.jpg

The League's economy is dominated by massive conglomerates cornering their own markets, who have been largely left to their own devices by the League Government. The only major regulations set by the League Government are related to environmental control and maintenance, and gives large incentives to conglomerates to participate in the reclamation of the wastes. As a result, while the conglomerates are massively corrupt and directly tied to the League administration, they are extremely environmentally friendly, as they know that the government and the followers of The Movement (which include the majority of the workers) will hit them hard and fast if they go out of line.

The ideology of the League administration, and the force that pushed the revolution through, is still present throughout the League’s society. Individual freedom in the League is fairly open in terms of physical and economic mobility, but with the prevalence of The Movement among the citizens and the widespread surveillance network of the state, those who speak ill of the League Government, The Movement, or the costs of environmental reconstruction often quickly disappear.

The average citizen is an employee of a conglomerate their entire life, though they are free and often persuaded to switch between conglomerates. Quality of life varies greatly, with incredibly wealthy elites being flanked by a large middle class of managers and technicians. The majority of the population is made up of workers, who either live packed into the crowded metropolises to work in support, logistics, or massive offices, or in the country side to maintain the farms, mines, and reclamation zones. Life for a worker is a lifelong, day in day out grind, but the conglomerates and do provide for their workers well enough to keep them mildly driven and loyal, while the League’s propaganda works to give its citizens a sense of purpose, whether it be saving their land, growing the League, or bettering humankind.

This is filling out very nicely!

Added centralization to my sign-up post.

To note, centralization levels themselves are not ideologies.

So a few changes.

1. The 50 province limit is now a soft limit, not a hard limit. The upper limit for province claims is therefore "around fifty", not "at fifty".

2. You each can individually save me three or four minutes of counting if you count your provinces! ;) ;) ;)

Behold MARS:

mrz3.png

Prior to the third world war, Mars was the subject of intense interest by a number of Earth governments with interests in developing its plentiful natural resources. At its height, Mars hosted a human population of over 60,000 people, primarily from the former Soviet Union and United States.

The third world war ended Earth's capacity to support the fledgling colonies on Mars. We continued to hear radio chatter for some time from the colonies but one by one these either ceased or turned to desperate pleas for assistance than finally ceased.

While none know exactly the state of the Mars colony at present, it is thought that the highly sophisticated technological systems put in place nearly a half century are now long-gone. If humans remain on Mars they do so in a way that does not generate tell-tale radio or thermal signatures.

That said, the automated terraforming engines put into place have had a long time to function and the climate is much thicker and warmer (though high CO2 concentrations no doubt would necessitate breathers for any earthling visitors). Imagine perhaps living amongst the high mountains- the air is thin and cold, but it there is most definitely an atmosphere.

Perhaps most telling, the huge subterranean aquifers have been (partially) boiled using thermonuclear energies and these waters have been pumped to the surface, flooding the great northern lowlands and creating a single circumnavigating sea and two smaller though not insignificant southern seas.

Vegetation imported from earth, especially lichen and some species of low-growing evergreens have taken root and grow wild, their signatures obvious to earth-based telescopes even today. Scientists speculate that some species of small insects or animals may have also survived, adding their genetic diversity and complexity to the soil microbiota and various plant species.

Country Name: Terra Piccola / Little Earth
Capital: Somewhere near Trieste
Government Ideology: Purianist with a touch of Assimilationism
Centralization: Unitary
Power Base: Administrative
Legitimacy: Elective
Economic Liberalism: 82%
Abridged History: In the chaos of the Great Wars, many were displaced. Some saw their homes destroyed, livelihoods ruined, and thus headed to the giant megacities for protection. Other few left the safety of those metropolises, and instead ventured out in search of a better life elsewhere. And on the Illyrian coast, near the bombed out rubble of Trieste, they found salvation. A group of refugees from all across South and Central Europe came together to found a settlement they called Terra Piccola, Little Earth. They dedicated themselves to protecting the masses who lost their way in the violence of the years past, and work towards the betterment of their lives without resorting to the inhumanity that dominated the last stages of the Great Wars. While the original leaders may have died years ago, Terra Piccola still stands as a beacon to those who feel lost in the new world.
Description of Society: Terra Piccola prides itself on accepting anyone who wishes to immigrate to it. The three largest groups are those of Italian, Slovenian, and Croatian descent, though there are significant numbers of Germans and Balkan peoples as well. Homeless and poverty remain big issues within the city, as it struggles to accommodate new arrivals. The government tries to practice a policy of non-interference in economic manners, outside of strict laws against technological developments they view as "inhumane".
