Abridged History: Due to the dementia and other mind effecting diseases effecting senior corporate , including the United Horizons Corporation, Australia suffered from a massive economic downturn in the 2040s. After a disastrous attempt to recoup the losses through loaning out their army, the country collapsed and entered a decades-long civil war. Eventually the mechanical monstrosities that were used to fight these wars turned on their masters, turning most of Australia into an unliveable hell-hole.
But upon the ruins of Brisbane, a large Arcology was built by the rich who managed to keep control of their AI. Why this city was spared by the machines is unknown, but many believe that it is because of the Sorcerer, an artificial intelligence heavily involved in the government somehow convinced the other AI to not attack. This mostly self-sustaining city (known officially as the Arcology but has many nicknames amongst the lower classes such as “Steeltown”, “Hell” or “Your Grave”

. This city became a haven for those fleeing robot oppression, so the lower classes swelled in population and soon the bottom layers of the city turned into slums.
After decades of hiding, the government believes that they are ready to venture forth into the unforgiving Australian outback and reclaim the nation. Many wish to leave, but will they escape from the many dangerous things lurking below and above the Arcology?
Description of Society: The Arcology is nominally a democracy, but many things about it aren’t all that democratic. The rich elite can make or break a politician’s career on a whim, only the most experienced and influential politicians could survive the wraith of corporate. Additionally, the state of democracy in the lower classes isn’t great. It is easy to fall through the cracks in the system down there, some of the lowest classes wouldn’t be able to vote even if they wanted to. The ones who do vote often have their votes lost or miscounted (sometimes even “lost” or “miscounted”

. The two-parties that exist, the Gears and the Stars, delegate most of their authority to the Sorcerer, an AI built to manage the Arcology. They very rarely overrule its’ decisions as it is usually correct. Still, democracy is not entirely dead in the Arcology, if the lower classes or other politically charged groups got organized they could make changes to the society and have done so in the past.
The Sorcerer takes a defacto executive role in the government due to the trust it is given. The Sorcerer has five massive “cores” that are semi-independent entities that exist to provide the Sorcerer with different perspectives and also serve as a redundancy system. The five cores are known as “Eternity-1”, “Kaleidoscope-2”, “Paradise-3”, “Merlin-4” and “Blue-5”. Very few people understand how these cores interact and what their purposes are, even the most experienced software engineers struggle to understand the highly-complex self-updating code that is the brain of the machine. But there is an extreme amount of faith put in the computer, very rarely has its’ predictions ended badly for the Arcology.
Factions Within the Arcology:
Major Political Parties:
Let’s rebuild Australia together
~Nationalist Party Motto
The Nationalist Party (Republicanism): The Nationalist Party is ruling party in the Arcology, owning 53 seats in the Legislature. They share very few serious differences in opinion with the Democratic Justice Party, both of them believe in keeping the system working as it currently is. The main ideological difference between the two groups is over recolonization policies, the Nationalist Party is traditionally more gung-ho about spending money on reclaiming the rest of Australia than the Democratic Justice Party is. This is a position that the Sorcerer agrees with, which is part of the reason that the Nationalists did so well last election.
Vote Democratic Justice the life of this city
~Democratic Justice Party election slogan
Democratic Justice Party (Republicanism): The Democratic Justice Party is the opposition party, recently losing their Prime Ministership to the Nationalist Party. Owning only 47 seats, they are licking their wounds and preparing for the next election cycle. What made them different to the Nationalists was the fact that they were opposed to rapid recolonization of Australia, however as this position is becoming more and more unpopular they may have to find a new niche to sand a chance next election.
Corporations: There are five major corporations, known as the Big Five, that dominate the Arcology, although two of them are fronts for transhumanist cults. They were the ones to provide the money and the resources needed for the construction of Arcology in the beginning. They are all in competition with each other, although they are not beyond forming a temporary alliance to pursue a mutual goal. The Big Five have their hands in everything, from food to organized crime, so as expected they wield a large amount of influence. Beyond the eternal quest for more money, the Big Five have various ideological goals, trying to build an Australia that meets their vision.
Humankind has always been curious, from the very first day we stepped down from the trees we have wondered, what was beyond that hill? What will we find if we sail across this river, this ocean? This desire stays with us still today. Although I pray that the horrors that have plagued our nation and the world in this last century will never repeat again, the devastation has given us an opportunity. There is a brave new world out there, thousands of people are once again feeling the urge to explore and discover. And we are in the perfect position to profit from their findings.
~CEO Edward Blackburn in a speech to shareholders
Australis Corporation [Neo-Imperialism]: The Australis Corporation is the largest and most powerful of the Big Five. They have successfully lobbied for the resettlement of Australia and have secured a large amount of contracts in relation to this. They are named after the concept of Terra Australis, the name of a hypothetical continent proposed in the classical era that Australia was named after.
Yes General, the senior partners share your concerns. The decisions made by the Sorcerer should be followed to the letter, the fate of our society should not be made by a group of soulless sycophants. Forgive me, I was being careless. Yes. Yes. Good. I look forward to it.
~Phone conversation made by a senior Unlimited Horizons Corporation executive to an unknown party.
Unlimited Horizons Corporation [Fascism]:
Oh how the mighty have fallen. The Unlimited Horizons Corporation used to control all of Australia, but now they are merely one of many organizations vying for control of the Arcology. Still, they are the second most powerful of the corporations, however they are opposed by both the Australis Corporation and Southern Cross Industries which is making things difficult for them. Their goals are one of the most ambitious of the corporations, they wish to take absolute control of the Arcology and return Australia to their unopposed rule. To make this possible they have started to ally themselves with hardliners in the military and the police force, to appease their new allies their mantra has taken a Fascistic tone, although with a larger focus on keeping order rather than the racial aspects of the ideology.
Southern Cross Industries [Federalism]: TL;DR: Corporation with the ultimate goal of returning Australia to the state it was before IU1.
Transhumanist Cults: TL;DR: These cults are exclusively for the very, very rich but they have a lot of money so they use that to influence people.
Cyber Vampires/Poly-Blanche Corporation [Visionary Thought]: TL;DR: The Poly-Blanche Corporation (formerly known as Blanche Polymers before it expanded into everything else) is one of the Big Five. It is a front for a Transhumanist Cult known on the street as the “Cyber Vampires”. They kidnap people in the lower classes and experiment on them with the ultimate goal of being able to upload their concisenesses into machines. Membership is entirely very rich people although they use their money and influence to further their agenda. Directly opposed to Purity/Xingjang Group.
Purity/Xingjang Group [Directionism/Monarchism]: TL;DR: The Xingjang group is one of the Big Five. It is also a front for another Transhumanist Cult that operates in a similar way to the Cyber Vampires except they use their victims in a quest to produce “the perfect child” who they believe will become the Emperor of the world.
Unwashed Masses: TL;DR: Political movements/cults that appeal to the poor. Has less money than the other groups but has wider appeal.
The Dysphoria (Unwashed Masses) [Separatism]: TL;DR: Disorganized group of people who want to leave the city.
Steam Union [Socialism] TL;DR: One of two socialist/communist movements in the city, the less violent and more superstitious one.
Free from Chains [Cult of Personality] TL;DR: The other socialist/communist movement, has become an ego trip for their leader who is known as “The Forman”
We Must Dissent [Purianism] TL;DR: People who think that being ruled by a robot is dumb.
Sandmen [Insurrectionist Anarchy] TL;DR: People who want to destroy the city and live life like it is in the rest of Australia (think Mad Max meets Terminator). Is by far the most violent group, they just want to watch the world burn.
New Dreamtime [Technogaianism] TL;DR: People who want to return to nature. Is a bit cultish, their movement follows what they think are the beliefs of the Aboriginal people but aren’t really.
All Faiths Church [Assimilationist] TL;DR: Extremist Assimilationists, they blackmail and threaten churches to join their own. Is mostly responsible for the highly superstitious Australian population.
