History:
Modern history has not been kind for Poland, indeed ever since the Partitions Polish history has been one of oppression and a struggle for Independence. When the poles finally got their own state after the first world war, many hoped that the "second republic" would last. Unfortunately for them Poland was attacked by both the fascists and communists, ripping the state apart and forcing the poles once again into oppression.
Even after the fall of Fascism, Poland was not independent, having been forced to cede miles of polish lands to the USSR after the war, and being under the iron grip of the USSR the poles only had nominal Independence.
This was the situation for decades, up until recently. In the year 2000, as the stress of the long gone Cold War was going on, Poland was able to become independent for the first time in 61 years. Throwing off the shackles of communism, the Warsaw pact, and the USSR, the Third Republic was declared and established. With multiple parties, a President and a Prime Minister. While Poland is considered a social republic by many as the years of communism and the ideology forced on the people were difficult to get rid of, these new generations are becoming increasingly diverse in political philosophy. Even to the point that a monarchist revival party has developed.
Over the next forty years Poland became more democratic and westernized, weary of outright becoming friendly with a western power, Poland tiptoed the line between east and west, becoming a beacon of how the east can become like the west, as well as being a bastion of how socialism and democracy are compatible.
Finally in the year 2040 the USSR collapsed into civil war, in the chaos of the opening months the Polish military moved into many of her former territories that were annexed by the USSR at the end of the Second World War. A peacekeeping exercise was the excuse, and as the civil war dragged on and new states formed, these lands were annexed directly into the republic.
We now come to today, Poland is still a social republic, however with a far greater political diversity, and the near total dominance that Labour United has had for the past 40 years is starting to become shaky, and with the return of Russia as a power in Eastern Europe, it is yet to be decided if Poland will continue to remain independent.
But one thing now is certain.
Poland is not yet lost.
