IOT Developmental Thread

I joined late, but I just drifted away after my first update. I think it was mostly because I was discouraged by the extreme lack of activity, although maybe I was unfair because I was comparing it to IB, which seems to be the exception, not the rule. But I just got the feeling that it was on a slow decline to death, since hardly anybody ever posted, whether in the thread or in the UN social group.

I have this to say about IOTs in general.

Why did I&B last so long? In my humble opinion, the reason was not in the rules. The rules, in fact, were unbalanced and pretty complicated. Kiwitt was a real good GM, but that was not the main reason. The main reason, I believe, was the map.

Yes, the map. What about it? Well, first of all, its provinces were named. This simplifies giving out orders because people dont have to take the time to make minimaps for orders and war plans. Giving provinces names, in fact, allows players to spend more time roleplaying and giving the game world character.

I hope y'all who make new maps consider this.

The map was beautiful and i love it, but to attribute I&B's success to solely the map is quite ridiculous.

I agree the map was good, but while the rules were complicated ... it really was the players and humbly myself that made it a success, with their interaction with each other.

Most of I&B's rules were just fine. Nobody really used espionage to it's full power until the end, though.

@Thor: I kinda forget about it. I'm never really sure where to go with it, because I usually don't have time to write up alot of roleplay. I'll try and think of something this week to add, but the general lack of activity makes it hard to get into. That and the Abhorrants took North Carolina and alot of my land is nuclear waste. Which is a little discouraging.

Btw you guys: So you guys, I've decided to run for Congress in the CFC Townhall Elections and since I'm most active here declared IOT my subforum to represent. Hopefully no one will oppose this move and I would love y'alls support.

Yup. It was a great GM, combined with excellent players/RPers and an interesting world to boot that allowed Iron and Blood to stay active, for, I think it's 5 months now.

Don't forget mutual hatred of France!

My suggestion is that you should start it, and when I say for you to start I mean do it now without any sort of planing what so ever.

I'd prefer if more IOTs were like that. Especially since I'm not really able to make maps at present.

I kinda agree. I think the first thing I thought when I checked out the thread was "Holy crap that map is awesome."

Yeah, about maps, I think we should take the less is more approach.

Also, I have come up with a new battle system. I believe that Sonereal is the first to start using it for his IOT:

It basically requires two governments consenting to grow the trade route to a moderate or major OR for a non-trade center city to increase it's LPs enough. Look at the Eastern Mediterranean-Indian cultures for examples. ;)

Also, since I'm just now realizing that we're going to get to the point where there are thousands upon thousands of LPs circulating, I'm reforming the combat rules only slightly so that I don't do an individual roll for each combat round (like I did in RIOT). This means an extra twelve hours won't be slapped onto how long it takes to update.
----------

Basically, say that an attacker is using 10 LPs to attack a territory defended with 5 LPs. Defenders get a 20% defensive bonus (meaning the 5 LPs becomes 6 for combat purposes). I add up the 6 and 10 (equaling 16) and do a 1-16 RNG roll. 1-10, Attacker wins. 11-16, Defender Wins.

So, cities give a 20% defensive bonus, defending 20%, each epoch above your opponent 20%, amphibious landing is a 20% penalty, etc.

There are no defensive bonuses at seat though. Just technology bonuses.

When I go and calculate how many LPs are lost (if any), it'll simply be how far away the RNG number is from the opponent's number zone. So, say that I roll a 15 (Defender Wins), the Attacker (if he was using Countryside LPs) loses 5 LPs.

In other words, only two RNG rolls for a single battle.

As opposed to the +500 rolls I did for a large mid-game battle RIOT.

I was going to do something like that for my IOT, but with more rolls. I guess it would be easier if I used this battle system.

No Safe Harbour's map has named regions, but the actual provinces are far too small to assign individual names to.
