This is a very important thing to argue about.

EDIT: Although, to be fair it is very annoying to edit the maps as a player or as a GM using another person's map. And would be really awkward for a GM to upload two different copies of the map (the map and the associated GIMP/Paint.NET/Photoshop/Whatever) file.

why is it awkward? It is literally a couple more clicks and it isn't confusing in the slightest.

I mean do what you want but I don't see how making a layered copy is that much work compared to the box thing.

The GM isn't uploading the damn layered copy, he's uploading a PNG with merged layers which we then crappily edit. It doesn't have to be perfect, you know. It's not like anyone fills in every pixel when someone uploads a JPEG.
