When He got back, it had formed a hearty layer of ice, and with His holy Scouring Pad the LORD did buff out those scratches. And so Poland was born.

Those hominids that were not total wusses who run off to Florida the moment the thermometer drops below 20 degrees became the Poles. Their robustness, handsomeness, and all-around empirical superiority made them the stuff of legend, and they were the prototype for the Aryan myth (the word "Aryan" stemming from "Varian", a corruption of "Varsovian"). Polish culture provided the blueprint for both Slavic and Teutonic traditions, and the fact that it retained the best qualities of both remained a historical sore spot for its German and Russian descendents. The extent of Polish inheritance remains a matter of academic dispute, with some scholars arguing derivative traditions can be found in North Africa and as far away as the Americas.

After the collapse of the Roman Empire due to the influx of Polish plumbers, who proved that using lead pipes for drinking water was a horrendously bad idea and thereby provoked a Latin spiritual crisis, Poland emerged as one of the most important central European polities, and was instrumental in repelling the Mongol hordes of the 13th Century. Gifted with foresight, it entered into a "commonwealth" with Lithuania so that future Lithuanians would be able to point to a moment in history when they were relevant. The emergent state was a model for human progress, developing the first formal European constitution and ushering in an unprecedented era of religious and ethnic co-prosperity which, try as they might, the Habsburgs never managed to replicate.

Modern historians think that Poland's power was shattered in the 18th Century as the country was partitioned between Russia and Germany, but the joke was on their supposed conquerors: Polish intelligentsia exploted the joint annexation to infiltrate the highest rungs of Russian and Prussian culture, thereby secretly developing the very institutions those wayward nationalists would later claim had made them superior to the Polack. Today people often joke about Polish performance in World War II, not realizing that the Germans and Soviets only managed to conquer the country by marching backwards, thereby tricking the Poles into thinking they were running away. Poland is recognized as the only country where Communism worked; the only reason the Socialist government was dismantled was so that fellow Pole Karol Józef Wojtyła could claim credit for defeating the Soviet Union.

Contemporary Poland is the richest, most industrialized, and most socially progressive country in Europe, and possibly the world. A major hub of international trade, tourism and technological development, its most renowned institution is its space programme.
