a group of volunteer rescue workers that emerged in the liberated areas of Syria after basic infrastructure began crumbling in the chaos of the civil war. The Syria Civil Defense began as a collective of ordinary civilians — once tailors, teachers and construction workers before the uprising began — responding to local bombings, attempting to help in any way that they could. In its early stages, many medical professionals criticized the civil defense teams, pointing out that without medical expertise many of their well-intentioned acts could be causing more harm than good with bombing survivors in critical condition. However, after a preliminary medical and rescue training — and the uniform, including the white helmets that gave them their name — the Syrian Civil Defense returned to their respective neighborhoods equipped to save the first lives.

“I asked an international team how many had responded to a bomb attack, and maybe one hand went up,” said James Le Mesurier, Syrian Civil Defense program manager at Analysis Research and Knowledge and founder of the not-for-profit organization May Day Rescue. “With the Syrian Civil Defense, every hand in the room goes up.”

Now, the Syrian Civil Defense has saved more than 2,500 lives with 60 teams across the liberated areas of Syria.

Although many of the residents of liberated areas like Aleppo and Idlib have fled, those that remain — often either the poorest and most vulnerable or most dedicated residents — experience daily indiscriminate shelling and aerial bombardments from the Assad regime, destroying neighborhoods and brutally killing and maiming civilians in the process. Despite the risk of a secondary bombing, a common regime tactic, the White Helmets immediately rush to the site of the bombing, moving aside concrete to pick out bodies and rush anyone who might still be alive to the hospital.

“There used to be an uncertainty that a bomb could be dropped at any moments, and — if it happened to be dropped on your house — you would die,”Le Mesurier said. “Now there is hope amongst people that even if their building does collapse, they can be rescued.”

Political impartiality is central to the White Helmet’s operation. While Syria is riddled with strife between those who support the regime and those who support the opposition in fighting for a free Syria — not to mention the encroaching Islamic State — the White Helmets are blind to these loyalties as they perform their work. Although most of their work comes in the aftermath of Assad’s barrel bombs — which pummel some neighborhoods more than 50 times per day — the rescue workers have also been known to risk sniper fire to help those loyal to the regime.

Twenty-six Syrian Civil Defense members have died while working, making it one of the most dangerous jobs in the world with a 5 percent casualty rate.

Despite being heralded as heroes by many, the Syrian Civil Defense is vastly underfunded — something that could be easily rectified with international aid from donor countries such as the United States, United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates. The Syria Campaign is currently gathering signatures to petition these governments to fund the White Helmets in order to purchase supplies and facilitate trainings for new members.

I'd rather see international efforts to support these people rather than bombing runs.

miracles happen . Came home ı started my infected lap-top , stuck in the USB to offload the day's download and suddenly Windows started updating itself . Had done something previously but still was alarming . Great work , too -if ı may say so . Got 11 GB back . But it's not complete , am losing 400 MB an hour ; 'cause ı watched it happen . Maybe because some software at the webcafe got stuck while ı was taking in stuff . Maybe because ı decided to give McAfee one last shot before ı would remove it and it closed the system after the scan and something got lost . Maybe , well maybe ...

Indeed for this to happen something terrible must have happened . ı have no clue on what and ı don't want to have any either . For it must really be something to lead people to -you know- be helpful . Besides ı have always hated people standing on my way , listening to some news on their smart phones as if to gauge my reactions to what has transpired . Whatever it is ı didn't do it .

and while this is getting seriously infractable , ı know "you" will read this . You in this case referring to a multitude of people ı don't know and actually do not want to know . Now , 10 days ago some ransomware wrecked my downloads and within days 14 , 15 year old boys were discussing it in the streets , naturally with their girls that ı wouldn't pay even if ı had any money . By Monday ı was all zip-lips and came back home and started Irfanview to work on my Civ III scenario . And it came back . now that ı would be losing space on the disc continuously , a day would certainly come that ı would have to Windows re-installed , which naturally involves web-connection . And in all probability can not be handled otherwise considering the anti-virus programme ı have is a free trials stuff updated to the 10th of October -considering it's the only option ı know of that can be loaded to one's computer off-line . And naturally the only "dangerous" stuff that showed up were 32-bit loader .exe stuff ; useless for my 64-bit machine anyhow .

yeah , one day ı would have to take my lap-top online to have it corrected , 'cause it's bleeding memory space and while this was happening the whole freaking world would be there to peruse the contents ; adding up "nice stuff" is a Turkish tradition these days , too ... Turkey is a country of dangalaks in suits ; ı just had to "pleasure" of meeting these two beaming guys who were chatting that ı was in a state of panic . My survival is a function of a threat which Pentagon perceives as nuclear extinction and applies zero chance of possibility . On a slightly different set of data than yours' to deduce that am sincerely not capable of killing 40 million babies and kids in their mothers' bosoms .

I don't see this as an expansion, I see it as a desperate attempt to redirect the conflict. Right now ISIS is stalled and, in some areas, losing ground in both Iraq and Syria. The tide of conflict is slowly turning against them and now they are desperately struggling to find a way to regain the initiative. Libya is ripe for that because it is still extremely unstable from the overthrow of the previous government and there is still an ongoing civil war ISIS can take advantage of to replenish their losses sustained in Iraq and Syria. They might also be hoping that by opening up another front in Libya they can relieve some of the pressure on their forces in Iraq and Syria and get some of the US drones off their backs so they can resume their offensive operations in those two theatres.

IS are a boogey man. Barely a threat to their neighbours let alone the world's strongest countries, it's a symptom how the Western media have deteriorated that they are prepared to peddle this guff and a symptom of the increasing pliability of populus that they believe it so easily. And you are correct in not taking the ISIS threat casually. Taking them casually is what allowed them to become as big of a problem as they are now. As I said above though, ISIS has lost the initiative and the tide of war is turning against them. This Libya move is nothing more than an attempt to regain the initiative in this conflict; one that hopefully will fail.
