ISDG 2012 - Server Announcements, Connection Issues and Questions

I have successfully (YAY!) identified what the problem with the server is, and this means that since I have the time now I will do the installation of Win Server 2012 now. This means that the games will be unavailable for 12-24 hours.

When I am done with the installation, I will take the games back up as quickly as possible as they don't really use much resources - but I will have to do a lot of restarts initially, so I will not bother taking them up until I am done with all the tasks I have to do with initial configuration.

Hopefully this will be the last time I need to take the games down for a while now. Thank you all for your patience, again, and I hope this does not seriously impede on anyone's strategy. If it does, then please send me an email within the next hours at caledorn {you-know-what} gmail {you-know-what-here-too} com and I can temporarily get the game up on a different computer (as I am keeping all the Pitboss saves backed up on a second computer while I do this just in case I run into any problems).

Status update: I have completed the installation of the main server and have also completed most of the configuration of my network. I have made the Pitboss computer a virtual machine in Hyper-V, so that if something occurs in the future I can copy the VM to my main workstation and run the Pitbosses there while I am working on stuff (provided my network is up of course).

The games should be up within a few hours. Thank you again for your patience everyone :)

Thanks for all this Caledorn. :goodjob:

And yes, I was the player in the Dominican Republic that caused the earlier problem. My apologies. I had no idea it would do that. Back in my home country as of last weekend. :)

The games are now back up and running. :woohoo:

At the time I reloaded there is 32:10 left on the timer for the ISDG. For the first team that logs in, please remember to pause the game.

Everything should be working as intended now. If anything is out of order, use this thread as I will be paying extra attention for the next few hours.

We noticed that the PB timer seems to run very slowly.

Today our turnplayer at RB ended turn at 0400 CET, with 25 hours left (24:57:04 per screenshot) on the Pitboss timer. When I logged in at 1000 CET (ie six hours later) the Pitboss timer had only run down 2.5 hours (22:32:02 per screenshot).

So either we have to adjust the timer (the quick fix) or find what is causing the Pitboss timer to run so slowly.

I think that may be caused by the virtualization doing aggressive resource savings. I will look into it later this evening, as I think I can adjust this by giving more priority to the VM. I'm expecting visitors though so will have to wait until they've left. :)

There is indeed a slowdown of the timer within the VM. I can clearly see it when looking at the time countdown in the Pitboss window. The counter counts down erratically, sometimes using 2 seconds to count 1 second - other times counting 2 seconds all at once. I am uncertain what is causing this, as there is no reason why this should happen - but if I can't find a solution, I will just have to take the Pitbosses out of the VM and put them back on the main machine, as I don't want to adjust the timer when I have absolutely no idea how this time malfunction works in practice (i.e. will it always use 2 seconds to count 1 second? could it sometimes count 1 second as 2 seconds?). We need to know that the timer counts correctly, and that the turns shift within a certain window of time - and with this problem we may get erratic turns.

If there's anyone around who have experience with Hyper-V and think they may know what the problem is, then please feel free to chuck me a PM or email!

I have moved the games back to the server itself, as I could not find any reasonable solution to the timer issue. If anyone tried to connect during the last 10-15 minutes, that's the reason why you could not connect. The timer runs normally now, so this is no longer an issue. Thank you for making me aware of it, kjnoren :)

CivStats has lost contact with the uploader.

Hm, no idea what that was. Both the Civstats instances displayed an error saying Invalid Game ID. I reactivated them, so they should be working now. The game was never down, just as an FYI :)

The game hanged up while I was logged in recently, and I had to force quit Civ 4 (nothing happened for several minutes). I'm not sure which end this thing happened, or if it will require a server restart.

If you have an open pipe to Sweden later today, that is the reason.

Fake edit: Seems I'm logged out according to CivStats, and I can connect to the game.

Thank you for the notification. The pipe was indeed open, so I just reloaded the game. :)

Would be great if everyone else could do the same as kjnoren did here if they experience a sudden game crash to desktop or irregularity so I can look into it quickly!

Just lost the connection to the game while logged in. CivStats still shows me as logged in. Attempts to re-connect time out. No network issues for me that I can find.

My Internet connection just dropped. I will post when it's back up.

On a side note : I have been unable to access PyT for quite some time now (the webpage). Is there any point to letting the PyT tracker run anymore?

Aaaand, I forgot to post that the game is back up. I have disabled the PyT tracker for now. Let me know if anyone wants me to take it back up.

I was suddenly disconnected from the pit.

Could have been a random short outage from my ISP. It seems to be working as intended now?
