There is no need to get into tactical details; the invaders had a numerical superiority and good leadership (not to mention the absolute freedom of maneuver granted by the ), and though the defenders fought back stalwartly at every turn, inflicting huge casualties with their courageous last stands and ingenious tactics, in the end they were either overran or isolated in their forts and eventually forced to surrender.
