There's this saying about enlightenment. The wise man reports that he set out to find enlightenment, and he climbed to the first rung of a ladder with great difficulty, only to find that he had not found what he was seeking. He laboriously climbed to the next rung, only to find there was still another. Over many years of climbing he achieved great steps up the ladder, but did not find enlightenment. Then one day he did, and stepped off the ladder, realizing that he could have done so at any time.

The question then becomes, how can he share this knowledge? The only way he has experienced involved climbing the ladder that he now knows he did not need to climb, but only by climbing it did he come to know that.

While this has not brought me enlightenment, it has taught me not to get too analytical about whether some action was necessary to achieve some outcome. The rock throwing happened, and the victory was attained. While there may have been many paths to victory, the only one we know is the one that was taken, and it included throwing rocks.

Throwing rocks tends to be an act of frustration. Frustrated people don't think clearly. As for staying in the crowd; it's a crowd. Unless you're near the edge, it's not the easiest thing to leave.

Throwing rocks is unambiguously assault. I don't know the laws in Mexico, but they probably have something similar on the books. Doing it from a crowd is arguably worse, but I'd be fine with them simply arresting the throwers on assault charges.

I'm past my athletic prime and even I could seriously injure someone by throwing one. It's unlikely to kill someone but not impossible.

I've always considered rock throwing at armed people a Darwin type activity.

Especially against people who are known for certain to have firearms...

If you make yourself a walking political billboard you should expect consequences. I would never shoot someone for wearing a MAGA hat, but if they put such a political belief on public display I certainly see no reason not to publicly challenge that belief. If they choose to get belligerent upon having that belief challenged the consequences they should expect from that are not directly attributable to their hat.
