On Aug. 28, 1963, 200,000 people participated in a peaceful civil rights rally in Washington D.C., where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

A truly great man, Dr. King. We need many, many more like him committed to peaceful change. Thanks for the reminder, Aristonico.

Thank you Aristonico, for reminding us of that. Dr. King is one of my great heroes! You know, I've always felt envious and guilty that I wasn't there, nor did I participate in the Civil Rights movement. Of course, this is irrational, because I wasn't even born then. I just wish that I had been there! I feel guilty, yet honored that I am benefiting from the hard work and ultimate sacrifices of Dr. King and others, both Black and White, that made it possible for me to enjoy the rights that I have today. The very reason that I vote, even though I sometimes think it's hopeless is this: How can I afford not to, when people died so that I would have that right? I think that this is why I am an activist. I want to help change the world and make it better for ALL. When it's my time to go, I'll have the satisfaction of knowing that I've worked to create change instead of sitting around moping and complaining.

AoA is right.

We must know when to show respect in life and not make jokes. And that even on the net, where nobody personally personally knows us and no one sees us face 2 face...

Graeme you were wrong to post that here but I don't care if you don't like MLK. To me he was one of the greatest men to walk the face of the Earth but I don't want to force my opinion on anyone else.

However, to trash somebody elses post like you did is a horrible act of selfishness. I don't like those who try to make themselves feel good by tearing down others contributions. I applaud Aristonico for commemorating this occasion.

Sadly, MLK was murdered almost exactly 5 years later.

Okay ill try and go along with your reformed topic until I get banned.

If MLK hadnt been shot? - im not sure it would have made much difference, HE'd already done a lot in his life and as I understand it (which I probably dont) the black rights movement gained a lot from his death: however if he hadnt died things wiuld probably have moved as well but thanks to him, did he have any ambtions for presidency (i really am bad on US history and politics) because that would have been the only really major difference I can see (notice its that I can see, and im stoopid)

Just notice this 3 names for future reference: Washington, Martin Luther King Jr., Lincoln... The simbolism was incredible. The fight for the Human freedom, that make all of us equal, wherever you come from, whatever you are... I am still having dreams that one day we will life all together. Am I the mad one, then?
Places like this one fulfill the ideal, a place where you can express your ideas and you are only evaluated for what you really are, and not for something else.

I agree we need more people like MLK and washington (and ghandi too IMHO)

HOwever we do not need more people like Lincoln

Sorry to ruin your american fantasy about the man but he was a nasty, racist.
His decision to free the slaves came only because he knew that that was the way to victory in the war. Quote: 'If we could win this war without freeing one slave I would do it' - please dont reply that he was a product of his times because the idea is that he was meant to be against slavery. HE hated blacks and was reportedly arrogant

As far as I know, Dr. King was not planning on running for president. He was planning a workers march on D.C. before he was assasinated.

"Four scores and seven years ago Our Fathers brought forth upon this continent a new Nation, concieved and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing wether this nation or any nation so concieved and so dedicated can long endure..."
That is the beginning of the A.Lincoln Speech. I supposed you can find any link to it (I am in a lazy mood right now) and it is just from my menmory. Do you think any KKK member would sign it? I thought the US Civil War started due to the pretension of the President to free all the slaves in the USA territory...
