KA01 - A Simple Deity Space Race

In vanilla the "Spanish Missionary" is the UU. He has the same stats as the PTW Conquistador, but looks (to me) a bit like Michael Palin playing the Spanish Inquisition in Monty Python.
Are those the dudes who went around jabbing people with flaming torches in Jump1B? They were hilarious! I wondered how they moved so fast, now I know. Hmm, maybe I was wrong about what to do with books... :devil2:

Thank you, Space, AlanH, and Ainwood. :goodjob:

Plainly the vanilla version is out for me. I suppose now I need to know whether the PtW version involves no download, a dial-up-friendly download, or a download still too large for my purposes. Karasu?

The GOTM Reference Thread has a lot of information which took quite a long time to compile. Some of it's quite useful. Here's a screenie of a segment of it. It says the GOTM21 download for PTW is 1.4 MBytes.

PS If you go to the actual Reference thread the underlined items are all links to the relevant files, threads, web pages etc.

Thanks, most helpful. Having never played the GOTM, I didn't know about the reference thread.

Looks like we grew into a company of 12 overnight... Btw, glad to see you again NP!
And welcome to Tomoyo, Kaiser Berger and Bed head7 :)

We are definitely enough for at least two rosters; let us check the software version first, starting from those who already expressed a preference (or a necessity):

AlanH - Civ 1.29f
Bed head7 - PtW
Kaiser Berger - PtW
Northern Pike - probably PtW for a lighter download...
Tomoyo - Civ 1.29f
Gator - either version
Nikof - Civ 1.29f
Mistfit - either version
Ainwood -
A Space Oddity - PtW (Civ 1.29f too, if necessary)
Mad Bax -
Karasu - either version, and already set up for operations ;)

How many others have a version preference?

Talking about the downloads and setup:

PtW
Thanks to Mad-Bax, we will be able to play with the standard PtW installation.
Just follow the instructions in his post below

Civ 1.29f
I checked the original announcement pages, and there are links to full and add-on install packs.
The size difference is small however, and I think it will be safer to use the GOTM reference thread and install the GOTM21 mods.

I took the liberty to quote the reference thread, so that all links are accessible from here too.

The installer executable will take care of copying the appropriate files in the right folders.
There is the extra step that Alan mentioned, of making multiple copies of the "spain*.flc" file, but everything is well explained in Cracker's somewhat intimidating instructions ;)

And for any unexpected problems, we are here to help of course :D

Incidentally, I must say that I finally realized how confusing it can be for someone who hasn't followed the evolution of all these mods to go searching through them...

And -just to enter in the game atmosphere- I copied the links to the original pre-game discussion. Needless to say, reading the game spoilers should definitely be avoided ;)

It would be possible to convert the PTW so that it plays with the out of the box version rather than using the mods. All that would be required is the resource and pediaicons download.

Would this be helpful?

I'm here BTW ;)

You can bet!
I remember that you did something similar for SGOTM3, but I was afraid to ask... :D

Version: I only have Vanilla (Civ 1.29f).

@Karasu - thanks for the links, info and warning. I had a brief brain fart when I thought it would be useful to read up on the 100k win for this game, just to see how you play a good 100k game. Realized that would also give me all kinds of spoiler info before the page had a chance to load. :)

OK, I'll make the changes and post the files. Do you want a bix or a save Karasu?

Why are you asking difficult questions... I'd go for a save if possible, it seems the more orthodox approach -but you know what to do, the final decision is yours mate :D

EDIT: Already edited the "reference" post above to make room for your file ;)

I can play either version have van Civ III & PTW, plus the GOTM modded versions of each. A 160Gb harddrive comes in handy every once in a while.

PTW version Instructions
The zip file you need is >>HERE<<

Please unzip this into your Civilization/Civ3PTW/scenarios directory.

If you do this correctly you will have a KA01 directory in the scenarios directory. If you look in there you will find a text file which will explain how you can change the resource files to have smilies and initials and blips for food, commerce and shields. But you don't NEED to do any of this. It will work if you do nothing.

These changes do not affect the normal operation of other games in any way.

The start file is >>HERE<<

A word of warning (probably unnecessary, but I'll mention it anyway):

Don't forget to check out the AI civ traits. Cracker was prone to ensure that there was only one scientific civ in the game to avoid PTW getting an advantage over 1.29 from multiple free techs coming available at each era change. He would modify the standard traits to ensure this. If we want to compare results for a fast research variant, both across the two or more teams and back to the original game dates, let's make sure the playing field is even.

@Mad, thanks a lot. Swift and efficient, as usual. Does it also work, incidentally? :p

@Alan, you are right there.
I remember the thing being discussed and implemented either by avoiding scientific civs altogether or by altering their traits. I am not sure whether the thing happened before or after GOTM20 -and it will be difficult to check without being spoiled.
My guess is that the AI civs in GOTM20 keep their traits, but I cannot produce any evidence in support, and I cannot remember whether there were scientific civs or not; so I do not think there is much we can do now to even out the playing fields.
We should probably just play the games and see what we manage to achieve, keeping in mind that the PtW roster might have this advantage.

In this regard, Gator suggested that we may want to allow cross posting between rosters in order to help reach the best date -a sort of cooperative approach.
The idea is interesting, should we follow it? Or will the majority prefer a friendly competition?

@Tomoyo: done :)

We'll get the benefit of Cracker's work if we use the saves as they stand. This will only be a problem if the saves are edited and lose his civ mods in the process.

Yes the civs all have the traits as specified by cracker... I even made sure that the turn sequence between the AI civs was the same as the original.

The only differences are:-

1. Pictish warrior replaced by warrior for barbs.
2. Azap swapped to Med Inf for Arabic tribes.
3. Muslim Caravel swapped to Caravel for Islamic tribes.
4. All references to other non-standard units (though not used) removed from the bix.

I didn't just apply the standard rules to crackers game. I just made the changes that would allow it to be played without unit downloads.

I did play with the idea of changing all the leader names to be the names of the participants.... but that would have been naff.

Karasu: I made the changes in my gotm installation and transplanted the save and other files to my OOB installation, played half a dozen turns and posted it. I'm pretty sure it works.

Well, I can play either as well. :) Looks like there are only a few with clear preferences one way or the other, so just divvy- the rest of us up. :)

One thing I do remember about this game is that cracker had custom resources for 'province' names, didn't he? (not that I played more than about 30 turns of this game, but I just remember that as a feature).
