EAGLE, Colorado (CNN) -- Professional basketball star Kobe Bryant was charged with sexual assault Friday afternoon, Eagle County, Colorado, District Attorney Mark Hurlbert announced.

Bryant was charged with one count of sexual assault, a class three felony. If convicted, Bryant could serve four years to life in prison or 20 years to life on probation, Hurlbert said.

Bryant's attorney, Pamela Mackey, planned to hold a news briefing in Los Angeles, California, after Hurlbert's news conference, her office said. It is not known if Bryant will attend.

A 19-year-old woman alleges she was a victim of sexual misconduct by Bryant on June 30 at the Lodge and Spa at Cordillera in Edwards, just west of the Vail ski resort. A hotel employee, the woman filed a police complaint the following day.

No details of the victim's allegations have been made public, and a judge has sealed information in the case.

The 24-year-old Los Angeles Lakers star has told the Los Angeles Times, "I would never do anything like that."

Hotel manager Paul Pastoor said Bryant stayed at the hotel from June 30 to July 2.

Eagle County Sheriff Joseph Hoy issued an arrest warrant, and Bryant -- who is married and the father of a daughter born in January -- returned to Colorado from Los Angeles to surrender on July 4. He was released on $25,000 bond.

Hurlbert, who was consulted on the decision to issue an arrest warrant but reportedly disagreed on the timing, has three options: to file a formal charge against Bryant, to file no charge or to ask a grand jury to conduct an inquiry.

He has held back on any announcement while completing an investigation and awaiting test results from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

A hearing was held Thursday on a newspaper request to release police dispatch records of two calls to the victim's home in the past year responding to noncriminal actions. The hearing lasted about 90 minutes, but no decision is expected from the judge before July 25.

The alleged victim is a former high school cheerleader who friends describe as honest and ambitious, even auditioning for American Idol last year.

Eagle County, Colorado, District Attorney Mark Hurlbert
Micah Bernhardt, is one of her friends.

"She was real good on select choir, sang in graduation, she sang in a lot of football games, a lot of basketball games, doing the national anthems," Bernhardt said.

If charges are filed, Bryant's next court date would be August 6, Hurlbert has indicated.

Bryant's image as a role model has fueled his popularity with fans, and fellow players have rallied to his defense.

The 6-foot-6 guard was a member of the Lakers team that won three-straight NBA championships in the 2000-2002 seasons. He was named most valuable player in the NBA All-Star game in the 2002 season.

Bryant turned pro out of high school seven years ago. He was a first-round draft pick by the Charlotte Hornets in 1996 and later that year was traded to the Lakers, where he has played ever since.

My guess is that this 'ambitious' cheerleader is trying to get herself into the public eye at Bryant's expense. I distrust initially most charges like this leveled at celebrities until the actual evidence is shown.

Apparently he is saying he did have sex with her, but did not 'assault' her.

EAGLE, Colo. (AP) -- Kobe Bryant was charged Friday with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman in a case that is bound to tarnish the career of the NBA superstar.

The 24-year-old Bryant faces four years to life in prison if convicted on the single felony count, Eagle County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert told reporters during a news conference.

The woman worked the front desk at the resort where Bryant was staying.

Bryant has said he is innocent. His attorney, Pamela Mackey, scheduled a Friday evening news conference in Los Angeles.

Hurlbert refused to talk about the details of the case.

He said he reviewed all evidence during the past two weeks and consulted prosecutors around the state before making his decision.

"This did not come easily," he said.

Bryant, free on $25,000 bail, must return to court in Eagle on Aug. 6 for an advisement hearing.

In a statement released on behalf of Bryant, through his attorneys and his agent, the Lakers guard said, "I am innocent of the charges filed today. I did not assault the woman who is accusing me.

"I made the mistake of adultery. I have to answer to my wife and my God for my actions that night and I pray that both will forgive me.

"Nothing that happened June 30 was against the will of the woman who now falsely accuses me.

"These false allegations have hurt my family. I will fight against these allegations with all my strength. My wife is the strongest person I know. She is willing to stand by me despite my mistake. That means everything to me.

"I have so much to live for. And by that I do not mean the contracts, or the money or the fame. I mean my family. I will fight for them.

"I appreciate all those who have supported me. Thank you for believing in me. My family and I are going to need your support and prayers now more than ever."

Who cares? I don't give a darn about those peoples sex lifes. Why do news companies even bother reporting this crap? I am sick and tired of people's stupid obsession with celebrity watching. As for the crime, well IMHO its not assult if she let him do it.

Well we don't know if she "let him do it" do we? Isn't that precisely the issue for the courts to decide?

Thats why I used "if" not "since"

P.S. He's innocent.

Do you have some way of knowing this for sure, or are you just saying it because you hope it's true?

Celebrities are not above the law, but neither should they be subject to legal harassment just because they are famous. (Not saying anything about Bryant's specific case here.)

Hi!

No I don't have proof. I just think it's weird, that it took so long to charge him, after he was arrested, and I know they were waiting on the lab test. Maybe the police jumped the gun, so to speak.

Anyway, if he is found guilty by the jury, he should serve time in prison. Although, he'll probably just get probation (money talks, good lawyer), if he's guilty.

well i'm no genius but if she screamed in a hotel then i think lots of people would have heard this(not that it said she screamed but isn't that what most people do when there being raped or whatever the assault charge is about). and if she was sexualy assulted be it rape or whatever she should have called the police immediately after. I think she decided that she could get some attention or get rid of a laker star. I mean really why would a great basketball player need to attack women when many would probably sell their soul to him

one would thing that a star of his size who gets offered 100 woman a night wouldn't have to "take" what is freely offered.

[dance]
Oh yeah! If being smug was a crime Kobe deserves the death penalty.

I'm shocked so many people who attest to OJs guilt when less was known about that case seem to give Kobe the benefit of the doubt. Don't ya'll know he's black?

An ambitious cheerleader that auditioned for American Idols ... certainly not the one to want popularity by all means ...

Unless he got in the unusual situation (for him) of encountering a woman who gave mixed signals of availabilty and he did not have the prior experience of knowing how to restrain himself when what he thought was a yes turned into a no.

As a Dallas Mavericks fan, I have thought that Shawn Bradley may have a similar case against Shaq.

You suck. What is wrong with black people?

I am black.

Never make a post like this again, or i will have to kill you, you racist.
I think he was joking. Or playing off my joke, which deserves the same treatment.

I don't care if he is guilty or not, I'd have to look at evidence to decide that and there are more important things to do with my life... in theory. But I'll never get enough of seeing Kobe cry [dance]

I think the Sacramento Kings paid her to make the claim once they saw the Lakers were signing Gary Payton and Karl Malone.
