"Like" button

Is a forum upgrade imminent? If not maybe we could just give it a shot until the next upgrade and see how it goes? It can always be removed before the upgrade, but i can't imagine the code for a "like" button being very hard to maintain. If you need help with coding, a lot of people would probably volunteer to help. I know i would.

Yeah, Mise, I think it's a good idea. People will try to game the system, but we all eventually learn who the crummy posters are, anyway, not matter the number of 'likes' involved.

On the TED forums, there's a similar feature. An added feature (which we probably shouldn't use) is that some posters get a star by their posts when they've accumulated enough 'likes' through their posts.

Given that they are hinting at the end of life for vbulletin 3.8 soon, I'd regard a forum update as imminent. Of course only TF knows for sure.

Maybe we can give it a shot after the next upgrade, if there is an upgrade imminent?

Anyway, I'd like to know what your opinions are, mods. Valka is obviously against it, Ori is on the fence, and El_Mac is for it. Chieftess - are you in favour or against it? Ainwood - if it was possible and easy to implement, would you be in favour?

Hey! A non-negative response from a moderator! :D Thanks.

Well, I don't know the actual consequences, but it would be nice to be able to remove the need for people to post "/thread" so much. As well, a warning that a good post is 'good' might cause us to read them more carefully.

Yeah, exactly. Like I was saying to Lord Baal - the same thing already happens, except it's much more "in your face" because there are 4 or 5 posts that just say "/thread" or "winner" or "this" etc. These "I agree" posts are valuable, because they show that the post was a good one. But people are understandably reluctant to post that sort of thing, because it's seen as spammy and worthless, and tends to clutter up the flow of discussion. A system like this would eliminate these posts, allow discussion to flow, and yet still register that "this is a good post" -- a valuable signalling mechanism not only to the person asking the question, but also to other lurkers and posters alike.

I don't see what's not to "Like" about this.

Well, it might be a hassle to code, I guess. That could easily be a good reason to not do it.
I've seen some status systems go badly, so the trick is to figure out what you want and excise what could go wrong.

Would people post less, because they'd already feel like they've made their contribution?

I'd likely not use it, as I tend not to give my opinion unless I think it's worth my time. If I'm posting "I agree," I usually follow it up with a discussion of why I agree with a post. If I don't feel a post warrants that amount of attention I'm hardly going to be so impressed by it that I give it a thumbs-up or "like." I'd probably reserve that sort of thing for H&J, which is probably the thread in which spam is most excusable anyway, seeing as how many spam posts are done for humour.

I ought to mention this -- on the TomPetty.com officials, they had both positive and negative posts. It turned into a nasty popularity contest. People would vote down others just because they didnt like them. I dont think there would be as much problem with like-only though.

Another thing too is that on that board they had a limit on the # of votes a day which was a good idea. However some people figured out to use doppleganger accounts. I dont think this would be as much as a problem here (theres actually moderation here, over there nobody cares) though.

The forum software they use, IIRC, is InvisionPower. Its a pain though and I like vBulletin better.

It would prevent spamming. People would value their votes, and so spammers would be diluted from influencing discussions. As well, upthread the concerns was "partisans would approve of agreeing posts". This is still true, but at least not ALL partisan posts would be liked by all partisans.

Good point. If we ignore technical considerations, it would be cool if each previous vote was "diluted" by each subsequent vote. That was a complicated way of saying: each vote you make is divided by the number of votes you've made today, so if you make 10 votes, each vote is worth 0.1 points. Maybe multiply the whole thing by 5 or something, and cap each vote by 1, so that the first 5 votes are worth 1 point, and each subsequent vote that day diminishes all votes to 5/n.

But obviously there's no mod for that :p

I'm not what limiting the number of votes per day would accomplish, since you can only vote once per post, and can't give negative votes.

Suppose you had 5 votes a day. That means you would ration the votes to posts you REALLY liked and not just ones that agreed w/ your politics or something.

The main effect would be that your early votes (of the day) would have more value than later votes. Such a system could be mimicked by allowed a person to use more than one of their (limited) votes per post

Ainwood - if it was possible and easy to implement, would you be in favour?
I don't have access to install hacks. I can frig with some minor template changes....

Hypothetically, if v4 gave us this ability?

I think the "negative" response would be a significant problem, and wouldn't really support that. Not sure if you can have one without the other. There may be some issues with some people thinking that lack of a "like" automatically equated to a dislike. They may have to get over that.

@Ainwood: I think that's something people could easily get over. And if they can't, well, they can start posting things that more people like!

Actually I mean that all votes cast during that day, including ones previously cast, would be diluted by new votes past the 5th vote. So it goes:

Votes per day ...................... Value of each vote cast during that day
........ 1 ........................................... 1
........ 2 ........................................... 1
........ 3 ........................................... 1
........ 4 ........................................... 1
........ 5 ........................................... 1
........ 6 ........................................... 0.83
........ 7 ........................................... 0.71
........ 8 ........................................... 0.63
........ 9 ........................................... 0.55
....... 10 ........................................... 0.50

etc
