Like, like, hate, hate

My wife roasts 'em. Trust me, the stank begins well before the point of doneness.

Oh, another thing I like now is salad. Never could stand lettuce, but once I discovered arugula? That makes a tasty salad. Simply dressed with some EVOO, lemon juice, a little salt and pepper and some parmesan shavings. DELISH!
Did you sauté with bacon? Give bacon a chance :yumyum:
This is the first time I have ever heard anyone mention the skin on peas. Of course the best way to have them is freshly-picked from the garden. Oh, and I hate pea soup. It's disgusting.
That's what makes kids dislike them, I'm telling you... they might not be able to articulate it, but the green-ness coupled with the tough skin is what is repulsing them.

Fresh (or lightly steamed) peas, even without salt are delightful to me now. Like I said I I've grown to like them prepared almost any way.

About pea-soup... agree to disagree. It's so hearty. I will admit that it looks pretty vile... like gruel.

Sautéd spinach with lots of garlic is a wonderful side dish,
Onions instead of the garlic though. ;) Hated it as a kid but will prepare it for myself now. It must be finely chopped though.

When I was a kid, I was an extremely picky eater. Now there aren't really very many foodstuffs that I dislike outright. There are some contexts where I won't eat things, e.g. I don't like chicken on pizza, but there aren't very many things I will straight up say no to. I REALLY don't like mashed starches though: mashed potatoes/sweet potatoes, etc. One of the very few exceptions.

Oh, when I was in high school I was pretty opposed to alcohol. I had trouble physically drinking carbonated beverages as a kid growing up, and alcohol smelled and tasted disgusting to me. I remember travelling through the UK with my dad as I was turning 18, and him being absolutely crestfallen that I had no interest in even trying any of the alcoholic beverages that I was now legally able to drink. I remember having a conversation with him after trying my first sip of wine. I said "this tastes disgusting, why would anybody drink this?" He said, "well, it's an acquired taste." I said, "yeah exactly. Why would anybody try to acquire it?" It's a conversation my dad loves needling me about any time I'm back home and we go out wine tasting.

Musically my tastes have expanded pretty dramatically over the last 15 years. There are certain moments of listening to albums that are etched into my brain as seminal moments that dramatically altered what kind(s) of music I liked and like. These moments are:

1999/2000: (can't remember precisely when): listened to The Kids are Alright for the first time (got really into The Who)
2002: Listened to Meteora, adopted a hatred of the older music that my parents liked
2004: Listened to American Idiot, got really into Greenday, still hated classic rock
2006: Listened to Help!, rediscovered my love for the Beatles. Got really into the Beatles
2007: Listened to Europe '72, got really into the Grateful Dead, slowly started rediscovering my love for 60s/early 70s rock
2009: Saw my first opera, discovered I like opera
2009: Listened to Arthur
2009: Listened to Rock n Roll Animal (funny story about getting this album if anyone wants to hear it)
2011: Listened to Howlin' Wolf/Moanin' in the Midnight, got really into 50s Chicago blues
2012: Listened to illmatic and good kid, M.A.A.D City, discovered I like hip-hop
2013: Listened to The College Dropout
2015: Listened to Kind of Blue, discovered I like jazz
2016: Listened to *****es Brew, discovered I like fusion jazz
2017: Listened to Highway 61 Revisited, rediscovered my love for Bob Dylan
2017: Listened to Nasty Gal, started exploring soul and funk music
2018: Listened to Young Americans, started exploring David Bowie's discography more extensively

Those are the ones that come immediately to mind. My trajectory was essentially: liked The Stones/The Beatles/The Who as a kid, went to Middle School, got peer-pressured into not liking those groups anymore, went to High School, rediscovered all the music my parents like, and then developed tastes in jazz and hip-hop in college and post-college.

Oh lord yes, split pea soup.

I like soup way more than I used to.

Onions instead of the garlic though. ;) Hated it as a kid but will prepare it for myself now. It must be finely chopped though.

Sauted spinach with red onion, garlic and garum masala goes nice with a nut pilaf.

I still like all the music I liked as a kid but my tastes have got more eclectic as I got older.

I started thinking about the music I liked as a child, and now I've got the theme from Mr. Dressup running through my head.

Thanks, everyone.

Lots of things.

Adults: as a kid I thought they had it all figured out. As an adult I know everyone's a newbie at life still figuring it out--you can't master something you've only done once.

Vegetables: hated them until I had them prepared right.

Dating: didn't see the appeal in it. Then I did. But now I know better.

The progress of society and humanity: used to firmly believe in it. Now I think we're driving towards a brick wall with our foot on the gas and a manic grin on our faces.

Vegetarianism: used to hate it. Now I'm sympathetic.

Fantasy (the genre): hated its silliness, but now I know it can be good fun.

Gay marriage: opposed it as a youngster before I realized there were no good arguments against it at all.

Music: didn't like it until I finally discovered some I liked. It's still niche enough that I don't discuss it and can't relate to the tastes of hardly anyone else.

As a kid, I used to be optimistic that meaningful change could be brought about by reform when it came to politics. As an adult, I have honestly lost hope in this sort of thing. I view politics as a spectator sport. More and more, though, I find myself rooting for the current system to collapse.

when I was young I was reckless...and immortal

Then I got older

Video games. I used to love games that had a lot to figure out. I figured out civ1 as an 8 year old kid with no manual just installed it off a disc from a friend in dos and went to town. Civ2 was similar. Now anything like that intimidates me and I don't have the time or desire to figure out little incracicies of play. Like crusader kings 2 no thanks.

I had more interest in a sense of adventure when I was younger. For instance I would take my bike and go hiking in the forest, biking maybe 20 k and then into the forest and off the trails. I guess I thought I would always end up on a trail to somewhere, dragging myself and the bike through the vegetation. If I had gotten a flat tire It would take me maybe 3 hours to get home, maybe more.

In winter I could really get into trouble, with the sun setting at 15.30.

And I used to bike on the streets like madman. Overtaking cars etcetera.

I think it is what is referred to as the daredevil-days.

I suppose computer games? I used to be a massive gamer (mostly tb strategy) but now there isnt time nor really the appeal.
Though i can still play, sometimes for a few hours.
Unlike with lego, which dont mean anything :)

Oh lord yes, split pea soup.

I like soup way more than I used to.

One of my favorites as well. The splitted peas are cooked and mashed untill becoming like a thick sauce.
We call it here "snert"
whereby noted that the celeriac (knob selery) we put in it as well is very important for the snert taste and texture.
You start with a traditional vegetable bouillon with a marrowbone and add the cooked & mashed/fallen apart peas.
traditionally eaten with dark rye bread with bacon slices on it.

do you use celeriac as well ?

I think I use Campbell's.

Looks the same and includes celery (root) powder

Either way, despite all the whining about salt I after Orange Asshat positively mentioned canned soup... it's still really yum and approachable on cost. :)

Home made's even better. Makes the whole house smell great too. That'd be like a holiday prep. Went in last week, forgot how dangerous it is to go to the butchers!

Here I was hoping somebody would have posted something like "Pegging", and instead you're all just talking about vegetables. Disappointing. Sad.
