Lincoln vs Darwin Smackdown

Who was more historically significant?

Darwin. We would have reconquered the south eventually, anyway.
We would have come up with the theory of evolution, anyway, too.

A fascist vs. a scientist

Hmmm...

My vote goes to Lincoln. There were others before Darwin and others during Darwin's day who independently came up with the idea of evolution. But without Lincoln, the United States and the world would look very different today.

They are still trying to count the vote. Damn chad...

On a related note, my dad can beat up any of your dads.

It may be true that most politicians would not be able to hold the Union together as well as Lincoln, but don't forget that he is also why it broke up in the first place (not that it might not have happened anyway eventually). If he (or another abolitionist/free-soiler) hadn't been elected then the southern states would not have succeeded, so the civil war would not have been fought. I like to think that abolition would have happened anyway and in a more peaceful manner that would inspire less racial hatred later on, although it might have taken a lot longer. I tend to think that a more gradual approach to removing this evil (starting by removing limitations on the conditions under which a slave could be manumitted, giving slaves rights at least as great as those enjoyed in ancient Rome, and eventually making it so that the children of slaves were considered free and entitled to a share of the master's inheritance) would have been much less destructive. The union might still have broken up eventually over something else, and/or we might have conquered Mexico.

Maybe Florida meant James Buchanan, the president right before Lincoln who could perhaps have averted the civil war had he not kept a campaign pledge not to run for a second term, or if he hadn't done so much to please the South than they thought Lincoln would try to undo. I say that could probably be lumped in with Lincoln.

And once again, Florida screwed it up and voted for Buchanan and the result is a grey mess.

Not my fault! I blame Ecofarm :scared:

Googlefight says Abraham Lincoln by 4,100,000 results. By last name only the gap is wider.

Okay, why does Mississippi have Darwin ahead of Lincoln? :crazyeye:

So, it's your opinion that Lincoln caused the Civil War? Please. Lincoln wasn't even an abolitionist. He just opposed it spreading to the west. It wasn't until the South seceded that he issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

Slave trading in the US had already been banned since 1808. Vermont abolished it outright in 1777. All the northern states had done so since 1804. How much longer do you think the rest of the country should have allowed the rich plantation owners to exploit fellow human beings so they could get richer?

If he (or another abolitionist/free-spoiler) hadn't been elected then the southern states would not have succeeded, so the civil war would not have been fought.

This is true, but saying it means that Lincoln is "why America broke up in the first place" is a gross misplacement of responsibility.

It would be interesting to see which one would get shot first if they were both alive today...

Lincoln would be more significant for Americans in general.

I say Darwin, because it doesn't specify which Darwin. My name is Darwin.

Considering that most Americans don't believe in evolution, You're probably right. And since most of the rest of us don't really believe in US politics or presidents the choice is obvious. I knew it was Darwins birthday. I neither knew nor cared if it was Lincoln's. No contest, my friends. No contest.;)

That's not what I meant. I mean, Lincoln's actions actually affected the shape and culture of their country.
