LINES-World of Magic

Most pathetic update of all time? :D

No, there's definitely been worse. I'll expand on that update tomorrow and update stats. But that's the bare bones. And I missed a few things about Tripolye and Ur.

Honestly I thought your "update" you were just joking because for the life of me I can't figure out how Illyria pushes New Atlantis back to the Pyrenees, especially considering my orders. I guess I'll just have to wait for the expanded update and see.

Nothing about Hawaii? Even though I finished a wonder and set up three trade routes? Or did the trade get disrupted by the interdimensional war?

Actually, I like small sections of the updates. It means that I can do what I want (generally peaceful expansion, at least in this game) rather than having to fight other players...

Post 800!!!

UPDATE XIII - 1300 BC

"Good to see you. Let's get out before this whole place becomes deadly."
-Grandmaster Meremmor of Elgovia, aboard the Bringer of Wrath, during the landing on Southern Italy.

South America:
The aftermath of the destruction done by the volcanists in the Amazon Basin has subsided, and so Hawaii can finally begin colonization of the lands previously home to legions of undead. Without the constant attrition of war, and with the glory and honor of victory, the Hawaiians rejoice. (+1000 Hawaiian infantry for good morale.)

Hawaii also completes their great Merchant Fleet, allowing them greater access to many parts of the globe, bringing them further riches and a great fleet. Combined with their new trade routes, it is expected that Hawaii may become the richest nation in the world sometime in the near future.
Meanwhile Dur Veliz, successor to Dur Khaz and puppet state to Hawaii, arises in South America. (-10 000 Hawaiian population, +1 Dur Veliz, +50 000 Dur Veliz population.)

North America:
There is peace. The Hyperboreans and Elgovians continue their expansion. The Quebecois natives become assimilated into Hyperborea. (+1 Hyperborean loyalty.)

Asia:
China assimilates into Mongol society. (-1 China. Mongolia +500 000 population, +5 thousand infantry, +3 thousand archers, +2 thousand cavalry, +50 galleys, +1 education.)

Using this new strength at full force, Mongolia proceeds to invade Kojaro. The Kojarans are almost helpless as literally tens of thousands of warriors invade them on all fronts, while Mongolian mages teleport troops back and forth, outflanking the Kojarans at every turn. Temujin Khan decides to pay the price for greater conquests, pushing rapidly forwards despite a few losses here and there. (-2000 Mongolian cavalry, -2000 Mongolian infantry, -10 Mongolian galleys, -20 Mongolian time mages, -10 Ethereal Cavalry. -4000 Kojaran infantry, -3000 Kojaran archers, -30 Kojaran galleys, -40 Kojaran Communicators.)

Africa:
Südafrika brings out hordes of Arnemenn, magical flying firebreathing ostrich cavalry of doom from above! The barbarians quail in terror and flee, leaving Südafrika unopposed to conquer most of their lands. The barbarian warriors are still around, but no longer pose a threat to Südafrika. (-10 Südafrikan Arnemenn, -1000 Südafrikan infantry, -2000 barbarian warriors, +1 Südafrikan loyalty)

Antarctica attempts further expansion into southern Africa, but is somewhat stumped by the heat. (-1 Antarctican iceberg. It melted.)

Europe:
Gorin's attempt to invade Germania is delayed somewhat by the difficulty of crossing the English Channel with pyromancers and flaming Lomba Riders on wooden ships.:crazyeye:
Eventually, Avalonian treeships with Nurturers to keep the flames in check are successful in conveying an invasion force across the Channel. After this, Gorin advances into Germania, burning forests and Trap Plants as they advance. This strategy slows the Gorinian forces to a crawl as they wait for pyromancers to set fire to everything.
Germania responds by bringing up Nature mages to keep the forests from burning, growing new shoots from the ashes of the old forest to entangle the Gorinian forces and slow their march further, and hiding their archers in the forests to shoot at anyone who comes close. On the mainland, there now seems to be a temporary standoff.
Avalon makes great advances in southeast Sweden.
(-500 Avalonian infantry. -10 Gorinian galleys, -1000 Gorinian infantry, -10 War Wizards, -10 Lomba Riders. -500 Germanian infantry, -1000 Germanian archers, -30 Trap Plants, -10 Druids.)

...

Mediterranean:
(This is where I have the least to go on, so bear with me!)
Grandmaster Meremmor suddenly took a very personal hand in the Karthaginian War. Having commissioned the largest ship ever, he then hired Songhaian mages to make it fly. (something the Songhai government was rather upset over.) Crewed by a handpicked team of mages, the Bringer of Wrath not only reinforces the large Elgovian fleet (now close on a hundred ships), but also becomes a rallying point for all enemies of Karthage.
While Leviathans are large enough to bite most enemy ships in half, a flying ship crewed by mages is out of their league, and many of them are too slow to escape the Bringer of Wrath before Karthage starts sending ship-mounted catapults with their Leviathans at all times. (-10 Leviathans)

Abyssinia blows up huge sandstorms around the south of Karthage and feints repeatedly at the border garrisons, attempting to draw them out into the desert where they will die of heat, hunger and thirst. A few are foolish enough to do this, but the Karthaginians rapidly wise up to this tactic and fortify their southern border, inviting the Abyssinians to attack them in force. (-500 Karthaginian infantry.)

Khemri builds up troops around the Glass Desert in OTL Libya. Neither side seems willing to make the first move, although several Khemrian vampires sneak around it and attempt to infiltrate Karthage proper. (-30 Vampires, -500 Karthaginian infantry)

Illyria completes the Chaos Crystal. This is the signal for their troops to recklessly invade New Atlantis and much of Balaeria. Possessed Warriors charge without heed for their own safety, all while Illyrian mages incite further madness among enemy troops. Balaeria retreats to their islands where the Leviathans are likely to keep them safe; New Atlantis to the Pi'Renay Mountains where they expect to have a better position from which to hold off Illyria. (-1000 Illyrian cavalry, -1000 Illyrian infantry, -500 Illyrian archers, -20 Possessed Warriors. -1000 Balaerian infantry, -500 Balaerian archers. -1000 New Atlantean cavalry, -1500 New Atlantean infantry, -500 New Atlantean archers, -10 Geomancers -10 Golems.)

Pulling back and fortifying their position on the southern tip of Italy, the Hyperborean and Elgovian forces present there receive substantial quantities of Trafe before dismantling their warp gates for unknown reasons. The Karthaginians are wise enough to expect a trap, and even if there isn't one, the Hypergovians (my new shorthand for both nations) have no means of escape and will fight like trapped rats, so the Karthaginians advance slowly, giving Hypergovia time to set their plan in motion.
First the Priests wove a web of magic, using the warp gate machinery to create a sympathetic resonance in time and space. Then the High Chaosiers placed hundreds of phials of Trafe in the last remaining bit of the warp gate, where the focus for the web lay.

Meanwhile, the Bringer of Wrath had flown to a point some miles north of the city of Karthage. Here the Elgovian fleet assembled, carrying most of the Elgovian army with it. After receiving a few final reinforcements from whatever allies could spare troops or ships, this united force sailed south, destroying whatever it met on the way...
(-30 Elgovian galleys, -10 Hyperborean galleys, -40 Karthaginian galleys, -10 Aquamancers, -10 Leviathans)
...and landed. Since the Karthaginians had fortified their southern border while trying to reinforce New Atlantis, and their capital was situated at Messana for the time being, too few forces were available to stop the sudden rush of enemies, but let it never be said that they were not valiant in their defense. (-1500 Karthaginian infantry, -1000 Karthaginian archers, -10 Aquamancers, -1500 Elgovian infantry, -500 Elgovian archers, -10 Elgovian galleys, -20 High Chaosiers, -10 Walking Ripples)

For the second time in history, the Elgovians conquered the Library and laid waste to the city. Many of the scrolls were loaded aboard the Bringer of Wrath, which ascended and flew to Rhodes to deliver these at full speed. On a prearranged signal, Abyssinian Rocs arrived to carry away some more scrolls. (+2 pts of education to Elgovia and Abyssinia)
Then the force cleared a block around the Library, set fire to the rest of the city, and sailed away again, meeting Meremmor on the way to Southern Italy...

...where the Hypergovians had just begun to trigger their magical web. Climbing aboard the rescue navy as fast as possible, all semblance of order was abandoned in the hasty retreat that followed.

Seeing what they thought were defeated foes slip out of their hands, the Karthaginians charged forward. The charge was soon abandoned as the Trafe at the center of the web burst in a riot of colors, scattering magical bursts everywhere. It rapidly expanded, distorting time and space as it did so. Men stumbled, cursed in foreign tongues, vomited, then began to swell and shrink. Bones grew straight through hands, turning into bleeding claws. Holes appeared and pierced men through for no apparent reason. Some men were warped into animals. They were the lucky ones. Other were partially changed or made into unrecognizable beings. Most of these died instantly, their bodies unable to hold together. Others aged several years in a second, their bodies crumbling into dust.
The wave of chaos hit the Karthaginians by far hardest, but affected the fleeing Hypergovians too. (-2000 Karthaginian militia, -1000 Karthaginian infantry, -10 Aquamancers. -10 Elgovian galleys, -500 Elgovian infantry, -10 High Chaosiers -500 Hyperborean infantry.)
It then expanded further, stretching northwards for miles and westwards onto Sicily, where the Karthaginian capital had been moved. (-1000 Karthaginian militia, -1 loyalty for loss of second capital, -50 000 population, +5000 milita for outrage at Hypergovian tactics.)

[OOC: Elgovia spent eco points on this in addition to the two nations both sending mages, that's why it was so powerful.]

Stats will be updated later. "Later" in this context signifies "When Iggy becomes insane enough to give me his password so that I can edit his posts".

Story bonuses!
Elgovia +10 galleys, +10 Chaosiers, +1 Bringer of Wrath
Vol'Kiss +1000 infantry, +10 Volcanists
Welikoslavia +1 loyalty
Songhai +10 magicians
Karthage +1000 infantry

Karthage and Elgovia, +1 laughing moderator.

The Evoker of the Earth leaned back in his regal seat, contemplating on the differences between magic. Fuelled by the discoveries of the Evoker of Unity, he had rallied his considerable will into solving the mysteries of the arcane. As he racked his brains, the Evoker of the Eye reported on the happenings in the australian colonies, but the Evoker of the Earth did not listen. He had heard much of the particle-based system magic relied on, but.. Could it work?
Curious, he turned his thoughts upon the table. Using volcanism, he tapped into the stone itself, attempting to morph it somehow.. He did not know how, but he'd try.. There.. Jubilantly, he realized he'd discovered something. He pushed all his will at one part of the most miniscule stone particle.. Turn..
With a great splash, the table turned into water; in the middle of the fall, however, his unstable magic reverted back to normal, and what had been an ornate table was now a deformed shape.
The seven archmages of Vol'Kiss simply stared.

OOC: Not doing anything über; the point of this story will be seen later on ;)

Precisely, which is why it forgot to mention a certain war being waged in the Middle East.

Azash, I call godmoding. You're trying to sneak in some über-magic, I can tell.

It's not like I knew a single freaking thing about the Middle East. Write it yourself. :p

In the Mediterranean my hope/guess is that my allies and I defeated your fleet, since I think we had around 200 galleys combined plus over 100 aquamancers and leviathans dedicated to stopping your fleet. Plus we reinforced Karthage because I guessed you would attack there. And finially, I had ordered my southern Italy force not to move under any circumstances (because I had taken the bulk of my army not in Karthage to fight Illyria up north). So it looks like I countered most of your orders :p But enough speculating, we shall see what really happened soon enough.

I'd like to see those orders. Forgive me if it seems like you're doing some wishful thinking, or writing stuff based on what I did, or both.

Here's my response: The BoW has been hunting Leviathans for a while, I hardcast (MtG reference) 80 galleys this turn plus story bonuses, and my chaosiers get bonuses to countering your aquamancers. If you tried to reinforce Karthage at the same time as sending armies to Illyria, then Khemri and Abyssinia should have whupped your ass with their respective strikes from the east and south.
Long story short, you don't have the resources to stop everyone at once.

Cleric: What do you mean, "hooray Iggy"?

And a note to everybody: I'm starting World of Magic II later today. It'll be ... different. :mischief:
I hope some of you join it.

Never said I tried to stop Khemri or Abyssinia. I reinforced Karthage, and sent the rest up to fight Illyria. Kept the militia down south in Italy around you guys to mask the fact that the bulk of my good troops were gone. As for my sea orders, we'll here they are word for word (saved in sent items box) judge for yourself.

2) Dedicate the entire allied fleet to preventing our enemies from landing anywhere new or reinforcing any of their positions (specifically if they send a fleet to attack the city of Karthage, like I expect they will). Using abandoned merchant ships/fishing vessels as fire vessels have some of our leviathans tow them to the enemy’s fleet so that they run right into the enemy. The enemy will be close together, (because otherwise their ships won’t be able to participate in the battle and will be worthless), so that there should be little room to maneuver to escape. Exploit the ensuing confusion. Use our aquamancers (preferably the bulk of both ours and Balaeria’s) to stop their ships and then ram them (you know the drill, same effective tactics that I’ve done all along), have leviathans (preferably ours and Balaeria’s both) along to defend our aquamancers from any threat and to attack the enemies magic users if they bring some along to counter our magic. If they try to board us and fight, pull back, then use aquamancy to cause giant waves to clear their decks, then go back to ramming. If their giant ship thingy is operational, use our magic to “sink” it. Remember to account for the fact that our battle-hardened ships with their long heritage of sea combat and training will have an advantage over what will basically be massively conscripted sailors who won’t have much of an idea about basic sea-battle tactics (think the outnumbered Athens vs Persia at Salamis). Use small fast ships to patrol the waters and warn us of enemy movements. Have some do the same in the Atlantic just in case they try to surprise us from that direction.

Edit: And the allies do have a very large fleet, even if we didn't buy one single galley (and we did) we still had 180 galleys at the beginning of the turn.

Provided they sent their orders in this update...
If they didn't, I'm might just turn serious on your suggestion from last turn and ally with Karthage and turn on them.

If Iggy accounts for that, I'm going to consider quitting indignantly. First two allies do nothing, then you give yourself a secret "training" stat and declare that it affects battles.
But since Iggy didn't include a training stat, all galleys are equally trained.

Anything else is godmoding.

(And that's not even including the fact that 100 years pass between updates, so the "massively conscripted" sailors will have become experienced and then suceeded by two more generations in the meantime.)

This update is unraveling even before it's posted! Can't you guys save something for the actual update for everyone to long for in anticipation? It's like opening the christmas gifts before boxing day... And even opening those not yours! Shame on you! Be silent and wait for Iggy!

The "godmodding" has already been approved by Iggy.

No, of course we're not up to something:mischief:

On a completely unrelated;) note, story coming up shortly.
