LINESII- Into the Darkness

Part Three:

I am not a hero, nor am I a man of action. Never did I want greater standing for myself, or power, or wealth. And most certainly I am not a traitor. But in a time of crisis, the rule of all must be subjected to the rule of one. I knew this as a soldier. That is why I opened the gate.

-Quintus Selinius, Captain of the Arch

The Flagship was beautiful. Built by the finest Kalmarian shipwrights, it combined the sturdy style of their longboats with the sleek lines of Veritasan galleys. But it was dwarfed by the splendored majesty of the Arch of the Exodus, that even now Strategius approached. And the Arch Guard had been warned by the Assemblum to be prepared. For all they knew, Strategius might mount a full-scale assault on the city.

The ship delivered the signal to raise the gate. And then they waited. In one of the greatest turning-points in history, the Captain of the Arch, Quintus Selinius, was offered a choice. Open the gate for Strategius, who had clearly not disbanded his army and come with troops to seize the capital, or sound the alarm and attack him, ending the life of a military genius and a national hero.

Despite the orders of the Assemblum, and in one of the most discussed decisions in Veritasan history, he opened the gate. A recent book, popularized by the rise in allohistorianism within intellectual circles, is titled, "For Want of an Order: if Selinius Had Closed the Gate." But the facts of that day are fully known.

"Lord Strategius, the gate opens."

"Very well. Bring the Armada in, and secure the docks with the Archers. Do not raise my banner over anything, and do not slay the Guards of the City unless they attempt to kill us. One thousand spearmen will escort me to the Hall of the Assemblum."

"So you have wished it, it shall be done."

"Andronius?"

"Aye, lord?"

"If I die, you are to carry the news back to Kalmar. Veritas must remain unified, regardless of whatever happens."

"Aye, lord."

"And Andronius, you will be Host-Lord."

"Very well. We enter the Harbor, my lord."

About ten galleys entered the Harbor, to the shock of the Guards of the City. Blue and purple banners were raised, and chain-links were hastily put on. But Strategius was the first off the galley, marching into a literal thicket of arrows and spears. He stared at the troops arrayed against him, and they stared back. And though scholars dispute the details of almost every event on that fateful day, all agree that the following was spoken by Strategius:

"If any among you would kill a countryman, and a loyal servant of the One, do so now. I am no betrayer or heathen King, and if you follow me, I will not destroy the Republic. This I swear, and may the ground itself swallow me up if I break my oath."

Perhaps it was the boats filled with hardened soldiers that convinced the guards, or maybe it was the poetry of his words. But at any rate, the Guards of the City joined Strategius in marching up the streets towards the Assemblum. The way upwards from the docks was carved into the cliff-face, so that it rises in a z-shaped, curving pathway. At this point various detatchments of City Guards sent from the Assemblum themselves tried to capture Strategius. Most of them surrendered once they realized that a massive army was already coming towards them.

Wisely, Strategius sent a small detatchment back to the Arch of the Exodus, and continued upwards. And the growing crowd of soldiers was joined by shopkeepers, citizens, and children hoping that the chaos would give them a day off.*

In those days, there were usually about ten guards posted at the gate of the White Chamber. At the "Battle of the White Chamber," immortalized by various paintings, woodcuts, and epic poems, a small battalion of Elder Guards, their name implying a fanatical loyalty to the Elder Council, held out for three hours against Strategius' horde. But they were killed or captured, in the small duels that broke out in the marbled halls. Many sources indicated that Captain Vitanion died in a duel with the Stratikrator himself.

The Assemblum was ready. The majority were old, white-haired men in deep blue cloaks, the color reserved for them alone. Most held daggers. Surprisingly, High Elder Decimus was clad in full copper armor, complete with a javelin. Not that any of them could hold out against an army, but they were prepared for it. Even if they were corrupt, they would die for the Republic.

The last thing they expected was Strategius to come alone. He bowed solemnly, and placed his dagger, bow, and spear at the door.

Only about one hundred scholars know the reality of what passed between the Assemblum and Strategius. This is because the Assemblum extracted a two thousand year vow of silence from Strategius, and the sealing of the records of that day in the Catacombs. To hide their embarassment, perhaps.

But regardless, when Strategius left that building, on the seventh day, of the seventh month, of 777 Postum Diasporum, he was not Stratikrator.

He was Autorex Strategius, absolute ruler of Veritas, by the agreement of the Assemblum. And civil war was avoided, for now. It remained to be seen how the First Autoregium would lead Veritas...

Or how Aramis would react.

Not the little Stratikrator? ;) Great story, BTW.

The words Silver Speak are true

It is a glorious story, Fit for the Jesters At court, to amuse my Emperor of the petty politics of the other nations outwith the Khemrian Empire.

(yes i'm being an arrogant nation, but in my opinion, its pretty fitting, what with the general disdain my nation holds for the rest of you. (my allies are of course, looked upon kindly. :p))

:ack: I am being punned on!

EDIT: Going to sig that!

It's only appropriate. The mightly Khemri has a wealth of both philosophic and practical literature. It's quite profitable to use the same alphabet. Aside from some dialectal differences, reading and translating is a breeze. Remember: imitation is the cincerenst form of flattery. ;)

BTW: Any chance the Crystalic Calendar will be adopted in Khemri? :D

oh I remember, which is kinda why I'm using the whole arrogant front. its fun too. Hopefully I will become arrogant enough to compete with Thlayli :mischief:

Hmm Maybe I should write a story of Khemrians perceptions of the other nations of this world. (Of course personally I think all the players are nice, and want to have fun (*feeds others egos))

EDIT: heck no, we have our own calender its down in the past one of the stories. long way back :p

O RLY? Didn't notice. In that case:

Any chance you want to discard the old calendar and convert to the new and trendy CC? It's got alliteration? :)

"Khemrified"? That word is not found in the dictionaries we imported? *starts flipping pages* Wait, Khemri... Oh, right. :ack:

Funny. I read your post as "stats updated", but I guess I was just being hopeful. :p

Who is it who gets annoyed with 'workers work', 'moderators moderate', and all that? Is it NK or das?

Both. I think it was Das who started it though...

Hey, a MOD's work is never done. That's common knowledge. After you finally do the stats, you soon notice it's Friday and update once again. Plus badgering players for orders, of course. A continuous task.

Otornosiasm - The Nurmaferian Way of Life

History:

The origin of Otornosiasm is buried in the sands of time, roughly in the age of Great Exodus to the west. By that time, many Nurmaferians still believed in the old Polytheistic gods, which are now regarded as pagan and their followers nothing more than heathens. The founder of Otornosiasm was nothing more than a pagan priest, or shaman called Mennonas. He was not only a spiritual leader, but at the same leader of the seven tribes of which the Nurmaferian were made of. He had brought Nurmaferians to safety, away from the Khemrian devils who only seeked to poison the Nurmaferian people and provoke the seven tribes against each other and then destroy them once they are divided and sell the survivors into slavery. He had brought them to the roots of Crystalline mountains, to the edge of know earth, as far away from the Khemrians as possible. He had been determined in his guest to protect the Seven tribes, but now when he had achieved his goal, he was lost. He didn't know what to do next.

The answer was quite different of what anyone could imagine. Once when Mennonas was walking at the crystalline mountains, he had a strong vision of the future of Nurmafer: Kingdom which streched from sea to sea, from burning deserts to freezing tundras. Inthe center of it all was great city of Turfar, with something that could be described as greatest wonder of the world, the Temple of Otornos. Mennonas heard a voice talking to him, so deep and mysterious was it's sound that He was sure that the land itself was speaking to him. The message was simple: Build here on this holy ground a Temple to honour the god of earth, Otornos, and around it a mighty city which is to become the center of your people. As long as you keep faith in Otornos, he will protect you from everything evil and wicked in this world. Spread his faith over to the heathens, and convert them with holy book and holy sword, as this is your destiny if as sentinels of Otornos.

And so the Otornisiasm was born. Mennonas started the constructing the Temple of Otornos, but he never lived long enough to see it to be completed. It was not until his heir Mennodius XXVII in whos time the Temple was at last finished. During the generations a great city was built around the temple, on the same holy land as the temple. This was to be the center of Otornosiasm, and the center of it's sentinels, the seven tribes known as Nurmaferians.

Today:

The holy book of Otornosiasm, or Yána, is moral backbone of the religion, and it was written by Mennonas himself. The first two chapters describe the creation of world and the teachings of Otornos, the one and only God. 3rd chapter is composed of the teachings of Mennonas, and provide the morals for everyday life.

After the completing of the Great Temple, numerous smaller temples have been built across the country. Priests wander from city to city preaching in the name of Otornos, spreading the faith amongst the former polytheistic nomads with the holy book. But if heathens do not convert by the book, then they will convert by the sword. For this there are Falquan, the holy swords and the Temples guardians. They are religious fanatics, an elite unit in Nurmaferian army.

When a child is born, High priests examine the condition of the child, and if he is found to be healthy the high priests will consider accepting him into the Temple guards. The boys parents will raise him untill he is 3 years old, and if priests have found the child suitable, then they will bring him to the temple where he receives religious upbringing and lives for rest of his life. However, parents can keep the boy, but it's quite rare since having a relative in the temple guards brings honor and raises social status tremendously. At the age of 7 boys will start military training, and they complete it when they are 20 years old. When training is is over they become Temple Guards, and then begin their service under Kings command.
Temple guards are a separate organisation from the army, and can be commanded only by the King or the high priests. During peace, Temple guards serve within the temple area and do their duty as temple's guardians. They also carry out special missions ordered by the priests, like capturing and killing heretics etc. When in war, King can call Temple guards into military service and untill relieved they are assimmilated into the army. Because of their superior physical condition and incredible zeal, they are force to be feared on the battlefield.

OOC: Yeah, that's my UU. Weapon class will be described later.

Awesome! Great insight to your people's migration as well.

BTW, if you're unsure, I picture Turfar being built in an area fairly similar to Rivendell as shown in the Lord of the Rings movies.

well It's not quite like that, I have this clear vision of huge white temple on a hill, and large city surrounding it...

I'll try to find a picture about how i see it.

Btw, now that I think of it, the city is very much like the Nessos in Bannalees NES.
