LK148 - WM, farewell to Greece

Well with us being second in tech, we could also preemptively sign some people into the war against babylon. This would revert units from Babylon to other fronts and waste Persia and Egypt in despotic golden ages. With germany being so far behind, they could also be brought cheaply into the mix. If we are really lucky Babylon signs France against them.

That said I am alos ok, with going balkans first and attack Germany, I just dont want to fight a war against somebody who is not even a direct neighbour so far.

Going temples first, then barracks, we have at least 20 turns before we NEED to decide on a target, because we won't have the units to wage war for at least that long. Why don't we see where this is in 20 turns.

I was thinking the same thing. Once we have a decent stack of horses, and at least one hoplite in our border cities, we can decide then.

The key is we must have at least one early war. I hate despotic GA due to the wastage, but as Greece we can't avoid this.
Even one early war may not be enough. France / Germany will probably have just 3 or 4 european cities. Those are the ones we want.

China / India / Egypt can easily hit 20+ cities. To keep up, we will eventually need that size. However, one thing at a time. Short-term we need to gobble up a neighbor or two.

Hey guys, just a heads up. I'm posting this from the hospital in the town I live in. I went into the doctor today with shortness of breath, thinking I had bronchitis or pneumonia possibly. As a precaution, he ordered an EKG, which came back abnormal. He suggested I go to the hospital tonite for observation and do a stress test tomorrow. Once I got here, they did some more blood work, and guess what? Apparently I've had a heart attack at some point in the last 10 days or so since the shortness of breath started. All that time I thought it was being set off by exposure to cigar smoke, which does affect my breathing, and started about the same time as the shortness of breath.

What this means for my continued participation in this game is not clear. I'm going to have a heart catheter procedure tomorrow, so they can look around and see what exactly is going on. If it's just a minor heart attack, I will probably be home before the Super Bowl and will not miss a turn. However, my new cardiologist wanted to point out that they could find anything, and even end up having to do bypasses, and that there is a 1 in ten thousand chance that the stuff they are doing to me tomorrow could kill me, so if you don't hear from me in the next 10 days, you should probably just assume the worst

I'll post more when I know more.

Ouch, that sounds not nice. Definitely take care of this first and lets hope its not as serious as it sounds now.

Good Luck
Kulko

@Todd - good luck. Health has to come first.

Greebley usually fast to post got it, so reposting.

Todd, take care. I hope the test goes well and you have a speedy recovery.

Quick update. Things are not good. I need triple bypass surgery, which will take place on Monday morning. My odds of not surviving that atr 1 in 15 or so. The recovery time is anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months. If possible, can you skip my next turn, with the hope that I can play my turn after? Clearly, if you quit hearing anything from me, just drop me.

If it turns out that the worst happens, my wife will post here, otherwise, silence can be interpreted simply as me being in recovery nd too tired to post. Good Luck guys.

OUCH - sorry to hear that.
I know somebody that went through triple bypass, and it does take while to recover.

Todd, I wish all the best for the procedure and hope for a quick recovery!

I hope things go well Monday and that you have a smooth and speedy recovery.

Good Luck Todd.

Early:

We build the first temple (Sparta) and start on another Warrior so we can remain content at size 4.
France demands Writing and we refuse. Usually the first one they don't declare war on. But it makes me decide to do the trade for Mysticism. We can also trade mysticism for 21, 25, and 50 gold which we do.

Mid: Corinth builds a Temple and starts a Settler which I may switch. There is current still a spot open. Sparta completes a Worker and starts Barracks. A Warrior is kicked out of Chinese Territory.

Late: Horses connected.
On the final turn we get HBR. Mathematics is now known to the AI So I trade for it using HBR to Russia. We and Russia are now ahead in tech. Pick up 25 gold for Mathematics from another AI.

Notes:
There is a settler next to the red dot, I think we should settle there. I think we should go for the Barracks after the Temples and start building a few Catapults (so we can bombard spearmen and get them out of our land), Hopolites, and Horsemen.

Germany is falling behind in tech and have cities right near us. I think they are the target we should aim for.

Summary:
Red dot doesn't impress me. It is going to be choked by German culture. The only reason I'm not fighting it hard is we can use the extra unit support.

We should mine sugar hill by Corinth. IIRC it has 2 food. 2 food and a mined hill will be a very nice tile to work. We need to get production up and running to work toward military builds.

Looks good to me.

I considered making another settler myself, if not for red dot, for the spot in Italy that France settled. I agree Red Dot is meh, but it's enough tiles not to be ics (just), and the unit support is worth it imo. If we're going for Germany first, which is fine with me, I wouldn't sweat a culture choke, especially on Emperor.

I'm not against cat's for this war, but I'm usually not too fussed about them for a first horseman war on this level. Course, whatever is fine with me. I have some battles to fight other than this war right now... Thanks for the kind words everyone. I might be able to check in tomorrow, otherwise, the hope is that I'll see you all in a week or so.

Sugar is one gold, without extra food or shield IIRC in regular civ.

After readding all this, I wen back to check the culture flip calculations and now I am more confused than before.

Red dot will have a culture flip chance of 0,25% which adds up to about 5% per 20 turns. This does totally not fit with my experience of the game. Of course the whole placement is tighter than usual, so things like distance ratio has a higher skew than normal games, but even if I consider more normal games, it would still mean 3% flip chance in 20 turn. OTOH it hasnever ever happened to me in any of my games. Can it be that there is some minimal chance which just gets rounded down to 0?

Can somebody please run CAII once it is settled, and tell me what he calculates?

As for the other points:
I dont think we should wait for catapults for the first war. 10-15 horses should be more than enough to get rid of 2 or three german cities and get some space.

I Also think the sugar on a hill is valuable, but right now we still have a unmined bg which is just the same, but faster to uograde.
