LotR Series...

Variant: We may never run artists*, turn up the culture slider, or use a great artist as a settled specialist or for a great work.
Is it allowed to use artists or build culture in non-legendary cities to get a quick border expansion?
When I'm not playing a creative civ I do use the caste system to run artists for culture, so I can skip monuments.

Nope. We gotta find other ways to get culture there, too. I really think Stonehenge might be very good for this game.

And apologies for no start yesterday. RL is very busy and computers aren't quite fully behaving. Should happen tonight.

RL always throws a curve...

* - in a non-legendary city, we may run artists to get *ONE* great artist, to found Civilized Jewelers.

I see only 2 ways to get a 100% great artist without hiring artist specialists.
The free GA from Music or building only (national) wonders which provide great artist points.
So, to avoid any confusion and/or further discussion I vote not to hire any artist during the whole game.

It's allowed in non-legendary cities, so we can still have a GP Farm. Wonders and religions will be the best way to start our culture and than let the corporations push it over.

If I'm understanding correctly, we can't run artists or use the slider to pop borders or control unhappiness. We can run GAs in one city if we fail to get the music freebie.

LotR26 Mounted Mongols
Difficulty Level: Emperor
Map size: Standard
Map: Great Plains
Civ and Leader: Napoleon of the Mongols
Traits: Charismatic and Organized
Game Speed: Epic
Most other things: Default settings
Win Condition(s): All enabled – our win target is domination
Variant: We may only build combat units with movement 2. Non-military units may have any movement, but if they have a combat value, they must move 2. That basically limits us to scouts, chariots, keshiks, knights, cuirassiers, cavalry, tanks, modern armor, and mech infantry for ground troops. All boats and planes are OK, though. We must have one major war (at least 3 cities change hands) with each of keshiks, knights, cuirassiers, and cavalry. Note that spies are allowed, since they are non-combat units.

Good to see the series continue :goodjob:. I'd like to play in this one, but we just ran in an SG together. If you are looking for different faces I'll accept lurker status.

We just ran in an SG together? Mrs. Brown has been done for well over a month now. It's not like we're always in the same SG. I'll call that a sign-up.

Signing in , please.

I could see major trouble for
1. if no horse around :)
2. defense (especially early), if we can't build archer...
3. facing spear/pikes
...

Good luck getting this started. It look like a fun one, and I will be lurking.

Emperor variants are a bit beyond me, so I will pass. Plus, after LOTR25 I have a feeling you are in no rush to play another SG with me.

What about elephants?
They can be upgraded + you can give them the mobility promotion.

Also, no siege weaponry, 'til mobile artillery?

Btw, no sign up, see LK's comment.

What a fantastic team. I'm excited about this. Been a LONG time since I've played with Kylearan. Great memories, though.

1. if no horse around

3. facing spear/pikes

1. Well, we will have horses around, one way or another. Just...gotta. I'll probably have a friend generate maps until we get one with horses within a city's length.
2. Defense is a nightmare. If the AI attacks a city, it's basically lost. Simply leave one unit as MP and meet them in the field. At least we can usually flank and destroy all siege weapons.
3. Yeah, they're a pain. Elephants are an even bigger pain, though, because we have no counter -- and nothing even as strong until cuirassiers. We'll just have to horde over them and then hoard ivory.

unfortunately I played a similar game before

Sorry to miss you, sooooo. I'd glanced around for a similar game, but I didn't look as far back as mid-2006! :) That looks like vanilla, too, with uber-cossacks, so our game will be reasonably different.

What about elephants?

Nope. Move 2 is the criteria, not just mounted. I debated quite a while on this point, actually. But I went with the speed requirement, for blitz warfare possibilities. No crawling armies, here.

Also, no siege weaponry, 'til mobile artillery?

I'd forgotten about mobile artillery. Another allowed late-game unit. That could be handy. Otherwise, no. None. Retreating will have to suffice until mobile artillery. We can use spies to instigate city revolts, though, and I imagine we will end up doing a reasonable amount of that, simply to get cultural defense down. We might even want to discuss running an espionage economy all-around.

so the SoZ would be nice to have...

Interesting thought. That's a wonder I've only built once (in a must-do-everything warlord game -- quite fun, actually, found all religions, build all wonders, found all corporations, get all tech great people, build all 7 shrines, launch to space). A counterpoint is that we'll spend less time in enemy territory, since we can hit fast and hard, instead of plodding in with melee units, so our ww might not climb as high as fast. I have no idea which is accurate.

Opening tech path? AH to horseback riding and very early keshik rush?

BTW, I was probably wrong about a start today. I forgot I have a thing at the kids' school to attend tonight. So it'll probably be Saturday.

And, Ky, congrats on the impending fatherhood. It's a trip unlike any other. Disappear when you need, though a quick note once you can would be appreciated by all.

According to the 'rules', we don't really need modile artillery: if we manage to get there, we should be able to have bombers for 'softening' city/stacks.

Our better defending units might well be explorers for a while (if they DO receive defending bonus ?), they are quite cheap, but I am afraid they don't count for Military Protection (from the population view).

Keshik rush, bahhh.. we should start with charriot rush (if horse in capital of course) :)
