[GS] Māori Discussion Thread

I have a feeling the Unique Unit will be toned down before launch, the rest of the bonuses seem to be fine once you take into account the lack of early culture from great writing slots

It's probably right that it can't be upgraded into. It is a very powerful unit.

Absolutely. It would be the most powerful unit in the game if you could upgrade into it from warriors. I'm expecting that it will be unlocked with the Military Training Civic, so it will come a good bit after swordsmen are available. I think it will still need to have a pretty hefty production cost to balance it though. With double oligarchy it beats knights by 5 points if you factor in the Haka.

Other than the UU, I don't foresee the Maori being overpowered, but they definitely look fun!

Because of this and the +2 production and the Marae boost i have little doubt they will be more capable of culture wins than most civs. Great writers are nice, of course; but you can have a LOT more forest/jungle/reef/marsh/oasis/floodplain (srsly? FXS take floodplains out) than you can ever have slots for writers, by a factor of 4+. Look at the amount of floodplain in the Hungary stream and the one with England. One river can have half a dozen floodplains tiles. And you reap culture and faith from that as soon as you get amphitheaters, which is when every other civ will start to get GW points in the first place.

We have to see how they code the sea start. If they are plopped into the middle of oceans, that's one thing. If they generally start near the coast, that is another. Kupe's ability IMO balances out at least 5 turns of swimming to land; I mean you get some yields right away and you get the free pop and builder plus extra embarked movement for easy coastal exploring by any unit. The Civ ability+UB- bonkers early yields- more than justifies not harvesting resources which i believe we already had the ed beach message saying they can still chop features if needed. I think they meant the builders lose the harvest resource action. The UU, if it's a sword replacement, is just OP bananas. Which is why I'm inclined to believe it either is a special unit or its not the final stats. If it keeps these stats it will literally be the premier unit into the medieval. Matthias is gonna need to levy the land lubber alliance to repel the Toa, who can beat Black Army units under oligarchy.

I’d agree with all that. I think you’re right about resources. Well, I hope you are.

Not getting Writers is a significant penalty for culture victory. CV is not just about your tourism, it’s also about strangling other people’s culture. If you can’t stop other Civs earning Writers, it puts you at a disadvantage.

Overall, the negatives actually look very thoughtful, much like Kongo. I’m really digging these guys. Every game you play with them will feel like a Maori Scenario given they have such a distinctive play style.

The majority of the cultural victory comes end game when you've get all your 'multipliers' in place (i.e. computers, policy cards). They just need to get other tourism sources in place before then. You can get a huge huge amount of tourism from improvements and the like. With just Christo Redentor, any Seaside Resort is going to be on par with a base great work of writing (i.e. 8 tourism or more). Add in the the Eiffel Tower and other appeal boosters (UIs, City parks) and that gets higher per resort. Someone like the Mapuche can pull in a lot of tourism with their Chemamull.

They'll want to get flight quickly - which will make every 'unimproved passable feature' in their cities be generating +2 tourism, and get a lot of seaside resorts and parks and the like. Archaeology museums will also be helpful.

Oh yes, I forgot that the UB also provides tourism to those hexes. That does make me feel a little more confident in Maori's ability to compete in the CV

We already know the civ has needed nerfing, and First Look footage hasn't always been up to date.

From VG247 article.

From the look of those clubs, you should get a free Jade luxury for every Toa unit you defeat.

What globe are you referring to here? Was it something in the live stream (which I didn't watch)?

Yes. There was a globe on the table to the right of Ed that was centered on New Zealand. With the Maori reveal today, it doesn't seem coincidental.

Thinking about the downsides to there ocean start:
- Religion: The +2 science and the rapid embarked units to find wonders means they should be able to get to Astrology as soon as most civs.
- Pantheon: The don't get faith until they settle which could delay a pantheon.
- Goody Huts: Disadvantaged on larger land masses, but there are hut near the coast.
- Barbs: The potential to miss out on the gold, era, Bronze working and Archery boosts. While this seems important, if they do have a really powerful classical unit that makes up for not having an early general that helps a lot. And that only really applies to Multiplayer.
- Miss out on some experience for scouts so fewer level 3 scouts.
- Less likely to start with Mountains (I think, it seems like most are inland..)

Something to keep an eye on tomorrow...

Finally caught up with the Maori (spent most of the day mired in the 6th Panzer Divisions Kriegstagebuch - do I know how to have fun or what?)

About the Maori Civ I have only two comments at this point:
1. Based on the animations seen, their leader is going to wind up being called the Civ V Montezuma of Civ VI. At least he has a sort of cultural reasoning behind his antics...
2. So far, relative to the existing Civ's in Civ VI, this one has the potential to be the Civ V Venice of Civ VI: radically different start and probably play style than with any other Civ (so far).

But what really excites me, is that the Maori special attributes have the potential to be a base for ANY nomadic/pastoral Civ on land. Think about it:
Start with extra mobility in your Settler - either automatic or because they are 'paired' with a special Warrior-type starting unit (In 4000 BCE, could be Settlers on solid-wheeled ox-carts for extra movement points).
Give them special affinities for Pastoral Resources - like being able to add a Cattle, Sheep or Horse resource to a tile after they establish a city radius (pasturing their herds).
Give them some Culture and Science per turn before settling.

Large Cello! (Or Viola, or Voila, or however it's spelled...) We have a blueprint for a Real Scythian, or Xiungh-Nu, or Hunnic, or Commanche, or Lakotah Civ.

Modders, once you see the code for Maori, I expect you to start whacking away at Tomyris and Temujin!

The Maori would be excellent for Terra maps (either of the YnAMP variety or a future Firaxis variety). They would have entire landmasses to themselves for a good amount of the game (if Norway isn't also in the game).

Hah! Monty in V is pretty much the only expressive leader in the entire game! I think Monty in VI is OTT...

Denouncing chicken hop aside, Monty seems pretty subdued compared to Cleo and Kupe. :p I get the feeling Cleo's going to have a crush on Kupe and his Toas. :p

It IS the chicken hop that...takes him over the edge lol. That and the whole headdress thing...

He's cosplaying as Quetzalcoatl. And drove the resplendent quetzal to extinction to furnish his costume. :p
