[GS] Māori Discussion Thread

I don't like that the Marae contains no great work slots, early great writing slots are powerful. Plus late game if you are going for Culture victory those great works of writing in every city is powerful.

Eventually having extra Culture becomes less powerful.

Confirmed by Ed - No Great Writers

They better have some other forms of generating tourism you get from them.

I'm about to cry from happiness right now ...

There are so many things to note about the civ, but for now I'll just focus on the soundtrack.
I'm so glad they went with vocal music. In the short clip there were two songs and a haka.

First song, heard in most of the video, is "Me He Manu Rere":

Then they've added the well-known "Ka Mate" haka:

Finally at the end there's a short excerpt from "Pōkarekare Ana"

It'll be interesting to see if or how they incorporate all of these songs/haka into an overall theme.

I assume this means that you DON'T get the bonus for passable tiles WITHOUT features: grassland, plains, desert, coast, ocean etc.

Yes, I took it that "normal" tiles don't get the bonus. I was confused by the restriction being "passable features" instead of "features".

Up to now, a tile you can't move onto is also a tile you can't work in the first place, like Mountains or Ice. Natural Wonders are a little different, as some you can work, but then they could have simply worded the bonus as applying to features other than Natural Wonders.

They’re also more dependent on the map than most (all?) other Civs. Theoretically they’re super strong if you find perfect settling locations, but if you don’t or you start reshaping things a number of their resource bonuses can go away.

re the Toa, have we seen the production cost to build it? higher or lower than Rome's (expensive) Legions?

After flight it says you gain +2 tourism for every feature in the city. It might not be powerful early but who knows late game. It certainly will be a different cultural victory playstyle.

So, the two great downsides: can't harvest resources, means rushing is limited to chopping.

And no GW means their Tourism from great works is heavily limited until they get museums.

I’m not a fan of mythical leaders and not being able to generate writers or harvest resources feels very gamey (I know it’s necessary to balance them out, but that doesn’t make it feel any less historically arbitrary) but I’m on board with everything else. Polynesia was my favorite civ in Civ 5 and while I didn’t get R&F because I felt indifferent or lower to 5 of the 8 civ choices and the mechanical changes just looked like busywork, this may sway me to picking up GS. It may just barely offset my disappointment if/when boring Canada is confirmed.

Im sure you can still build on forest, rainforest and floodplains since I do not believe you "harvest" the yields from the tile when placing the district. The choice is do you want the high yield tile or the district/wonder. Higher difficulties could prove to be a pain since the AI get extra settlers. I plan to settle my capital near sea resources and reefs, get "god of the sea" and rush galleys and quads to take any nearby coastal cities. Also free classical era historic moment on turn 1 for having shipbuilding right?

Tbh I think this civ will play a bit like Spain in Civ 5. Only it has more tools to search for the perfect spots.

I haven't seen it mentioned yet but if you pause the video it states the UA prevents the Maori from harvesting resources or gaining great writer points.

It will be very interesting to see this on TSL maps: Maori vs Australia, two powerful civs, let the games begin...

I'm thinking that with the coastal bias and incentive to keep forests (at least for a while?) there's a good chance Maori lands will have high appeal and be ripe for seaside resorts and national parks. Add in the culture on tiles from the marae and I think I'll be trying for a culture victory with them.
