[GS] Māori Discussion Thread

I found some people who were puzzled where Polynesia and Kamehameha went, some were comparing Polynesia and Maori.
I found somebody that commented this:
Why did they replace Polynesia with the Maori? The Polynesians were way better explorers.
Not sure if it was reddit or YouTube.

Just noticed the toa don't appear to have tattoos.....whyyyy? The Maori warrior in Civ V had tattoos! :(
When I look closely I can see vague outlines of what looks like tattoos, or maybe that's just the shading and in my mind they are tattoos. Either way they need to be fleshed out.

After re-watching the first look I paid close attention to the mini map when they first showed the Settler in the ocean. It looks like it traveled down from the northern ice caps.

I saw that as well! However they covered that vast distance in just 4 turns before settling on the 5th turn.

Judging from the mini-map, the Maori could've followed the earlier shallow water to land faster than presented in the first look.

I love that they haven't held back from the full "throat slitting" motion. Apparently in haka it represents the drawing in of life. At least that is the arguement the All Blacks had to defend it with to the UK media when they included it in their purpose made haka Kapa o Pango that they came up with a decade or so ago. You can see it right at the end of this clip. For a while the All Blacks resorted to making the movement look less like throat slitting; though I always thought that was silly as even if it isn't specifically a throat slit; it is still a war dance. Great theatre no matter what Old Blighty thinks! They're just jealous that they have nothing like it :D

Also Barbarians will not capture your first settler

Okay I'm seeing conflicting information on this so I tested it. With Rise and Fall rules of course.

A scout never got close enough to capture my settler. I had a settler parked next to a barbarian encampment and the spearmen never left to take my settler. Though admittedly I had a warrior on the other side, I probably shouldn't have had him so close. Australia starts beating up on the spearman, later a warrior spawns. The warrior does not take my settler, but instead attacks Australia's warrior. And then the Spearman despite being at relatively low health also attacks Australia's warrior and defeats it leaving the barbarian encampment open. So I march into the encampment with my settler, and next turn the warrior captures my settler.

Now it's possible they wouldn't have went after my settler had I not captures the encampment and got the gold. I'm not sure how long they would have left my settler alone. Maybe I'll run one more little test.

edit: after another test, even without capturing the encampment, my settler was eventually taken by a new warrior that spawned in the encampment (I was wrong above, the spearman was defeated when attacking the Australian warrior). The one warrior took off to chase the Australian warrior all over the continent. And about 5 turns later another warrior spawned and took my settler. Game over man.

Has someone spotted this article yet? https://thespinoff.co.nz/games/05-1...ed-for-the-worlds-most-popular-strategy-game/

Interesting excerpt:
Learning from Lego, who cooked it with their Bionicle series and were sued by several iwi, the team behind Civilization VI consulted with the Māori New Zealand Arts & Crafts Institute to design Kupe’s ta moko and nail the pronunciation, though the announcement trailer mangles te reo spectacularly.

The article also talks about Kupe's agenda (quote from Dennis Shirk).

The Spinoff will be unaware that Firaxis learnt long ago that consulting people from previously unfeatured "native" civs is a good idea publicity wise.
They do seem fairly well versed in Civ V though, noting that there was a mod for the Maori by an NZ-based modder.

So given they're seemingly labelled as Māori and not Maori in-game, is this the first civ with accent/macron/etc marks on a letter in their name in the English language version of Civ?

First listen is up.

That industrial theme sounds like a full deep booming orchestral echo of the haka. The mirroring of the "Ka ora" bit gave me chills.

Another article here: https://i.stuff.co.nz/entertainment...lization-vi-launched-with-new-mori-characters

Firaxis considered Tonga, Samoa and Fiji as well but picked the Maori due to their conservationist beliefs which they saw as a strong fit for the Gathering Storm expansion.

Also, they worked with local NZ people to research the architecture and monuments, and a professional ta moko artist to design Kupe's facial tattoos.

I think this makes Kupe the second leader to have visible legs, after Robert the Bruce's (hilarious) chair kick. :p

Yes, but others have diacritics in their city names. (You can't copy and paste them when renaming a city, though, which annoyed me.)

Canadians when the ice finally breaks in the spring:

Here in Florida we stand in amazement as Canadians and Northerners go swimming in the ocean in winter--but of course our winter temps are pretty close to your summer temps. :p It's mostly the kids anyway, and kids don't feel the cold. :p

 *face-palm*
I suppose no worse than the Devs calling Fiji Polynesian in all their interviews... :mischief:

People usually either completely overlook Melanesia, or call it part of Polynesia. Perhaps similar happens for Micronesia.
