necro??
been there, no help
A "necro" is to revive a dead thread, and it's sort of a forum don't. This one is over two years since the last post.
Let me see if I can help. A MAF is usually caused by a few things, but it all boils down to the same thing: The OS has run out of memory for Civ, and the game sees the allocation fault and can't recover, so it shuts down to keep from reading or writing in the OS's protected memory space, or a location that it shouldn't access. Basically, it sends out an error code, and Windows shuts it down because it has violated the "rules."
MAF's usually happen on very large maps in the late-ish part of the game. There are many civs, with many units in play, and that means that the game has to keep track of a whole bunch of units, animations, moves, textures, etc., etc., ad nauseum. The game eventually just loses track of something, and presto! A MAF occurs.
Civ also has a memory leak. The more you play, the more RAM is used up and not subsequently freed, until the game begins to bog down on smaller worlds, and MAF on larger ones. This can happen even more quickly when playing a very large mod on a huge world.
So now that I have explained the why, I need to ask some questions:
1. Are you using a mod? Which one?
2. What OS are you using?
3. How much memory does your PC have? What kind is it?
4. How much memory does your graphics card have? What kind is it?
5. Is this vanilla, Warlords, or BTS?
6. Have you checked any of the system temperatures as you play? Is something getting too hot?
I'll check back later tonight, or tomorrow, k?
