Man convicted for staring at woman
An Italian man was given a suspended jail sentence for staring too intensely at a woman sitting in front of him on a train.

A judge sentenced the man in his 30s, whose name was not revealed, to 10 days in prison and a E40 ($A68) fine after a 55-year old woman filed a complaint for sexual harassment.

His lawyer said he would appeal the sentence. The court will explain its verdict later.

The two met on two separate occasions in 2005 on a commuter train going from Lecco, a town in northern Italy, to Milan.

The first time, the man sat next to the woman but she felt he had moved too close for comfort. The next day, the man sat in front of the same woman and according to her complaint, stared at her for the whole journey.

The two did not speak.
Does this seem a little excessive? Being stared at can be a little disconcerting, but sexual harassment? Sure, he probably was staring at her for sexual purposes, but if this ruling is upheld, then every person in this forum should be a convicted sex offender, because we've all stared at people at some point or other.

I think that isn't too excessive. But I truly pity that man. In his 30's and can't get anyone better than a 55-year old. Pathetic.

She was probably dreaming it.
Even if the man admitted that he intended to harass her, staring is so inconsequential that he doesn't deserve to be punished anyway.

First he got too close to her and then stared at her all the time. If that isn't harassing what is? (the punishment is fine for this small crime but why does everyone forget the first part)

Did she ask for more space? If she found it that terrible, she should ask him to move before prosecuting!

That is strange. Harrassment by way of staring? Oh no! Don't you dare stare at me! It make me all moist and uneasy when you do that!

LOL

Stupid ruling, she didn't object until she brought it to court, how would he know she's uncomfortable? The "saying no" rule should be applied here too.

Seriously, if some big guy stared at you in that way (I know, it's different, to keep the fear/annoyment factor) after first sitting too close, would you consider that just normal?

She was just disillusioned into thinking a much younger guy was interested in her.

What is normal? Anyway, I guess you can make that analogy. But I am not a weakling and go on about saying nothing to the man and then later press charges on him.

A women going to the extreme by portraying herself as victim of a "stare" is utterly trying to grab attention to herself. But of course i am not familiar with Italy's civil code. Or their laws.

Yes! Finally! I've been annoyed by people staring at me all the time, but no more! Like yesterday i visited my grandmother at the nursing home, and when i passed true the social area there where a large group of old women there staring at me, made me feel uncomfortable and it gave me a weird feeling in my pants. I will not take this anymore!

What if she was just too afraid to speak?

If a childish woman is afraid to speak toward a man who happen to stare at her, then she should get her head examined or grow up a little or just don't go out in public at all.

Don't you find it odd that a person can be rendered immobile by another person's stare? I do.

If he was staring at her, licking his lips and had his hand down his pants rubbing his crotch, then it's sexual harrassment. Probably something more, actually. But staring at someone? Like Volum, I've been sexually harassed by old people constantly if that's the case. Hell, my new girlfriend's grandmother stared at me every time she thought I wasn't looking at her when we met, and even dared to ask me question! The b*tch deserves life.

As Brighteye said zxcvbnm, if she wanted more space, or for him to stop looking at her, she should have asked. If he refused, or followed her after she'd moved seats, etc., then she might have had some sort of case. But this is ridiculous.

That's actually a tactic we were taught to use when I trained in martial arts. People get 'lost in your eyes', and are more than open to a hook or groin shot.

Eye of the Tiger, huh? That is a good hypnotic song. Hmm...*fantatizing right now of you wearing a Japanese head band doing the penetrating stare while the song playing in the backround * HYA Knuck Hya Aieeee!!!!

Kung Fu Fighting is a better song to fantasise to. I have actually been involved in a fight with that playing once. Unfortunately I didn't think to do any cool martial arts movie stuff at the time.

I prefer "Street Fighting Man" remix by Rage Against the Machine. Hell, I like all their songs being played while watching Kung Fu Movies on mute.:ninja::rockon:

..this is ridiculous.
Probably. However, we do not have the full story and passing judgement is dubious.
