better map tooltips

spot important map details
Map Trix shows you what you're pointing at:
  • geography
  • cities and towns
  • buildings, improvements, and wonders
  • resources and yields
  • units present
mt-river-bridge.png
mt-special.png
mt-wonder.png

geography

the top of the tooltip describes the land, with emphasis on hazards and obstacles. color highlights warn you of fortifications, damaging effects, and terrain features that can stop your movement.

settlements

see which settlement claims each tile, who owns it, and their atttitude toward you.
enemy territory appears in red.

buildings

everything constructible goes here: buildings, improvements, and wonders. unique quarters and wonders show their special abilities. buildings show their yield types as colored rings around the building icons: green for food, yellow for gold, and so on. ageless and current-age buildings have glowing rings.

improvements

unimproved tiles show which basic improvement type the land supports, and resources show which improvements unlock them. unique improvements show which basic improvement they replaced (for warehouse bonuses).

population

a small table shows the local population of each district and rural improvement. verbose mode lists the full population and their religious beliefs. standard mode only shows specialist workers.

yields

the last column shows the total of all yields under a bronze hexagon.

compact or verbose

hold down Ctrl or Shift to change the level of detail, or Ctrl+Shift together to hide the tooltip.
you can also set your preferred level in the Options menu.
  • compact: Ctrl
  • verbose: Shift
  • hidden: Ctrl+Shift

compatibility with other mods

known interactions:
  • Sukritact's Simple UI Adjustments: compatible. when both mods are installed, the Map Trix tooltip replaces Sukritact's version.
  • zhekoff's Colorful Top Panel: compatible. when both mods are installed, zhekoff's yield banner replaces the Map Trix version.
  • TCS Improved Plot Tooltip: incompatible. both mods enhance the same feature in different ways.

localization

supported languages:
  • German (translated by Chr1Z93)
  • Italian (translated by leonardfactory)
  • Korean (translated by Hotsolidinfill)
  • Russian (translated by Webrok)
  • Simplified Chinese (translated by v480615)
  • Traditional Chinese (translated by v480615)
thank you all for your help!

I am going to preface this report with I am running a lot of mods and something else may be conflicting, but I just wanted to toss this out there in case this is a known issue.

With that said, I seem to have some missing icons in my tooltips:

The majority of tooltip icons seem to be working just fine, and I included two in the above image to show that not everything is missing. I'll also add:
  • I am only running one standalone tooltip mod (yours), but also Sukritact's Simple UI Adjustments (which I believe you have said is compatible)
  • Previously, I was using TCS's tooltip mod and did not experience this issue (but again, it's currently been swapped out for yours)
Unfortunately, the game I am currently playing has a lot of mod dependencies, and so I'm unable to disable a handful of them in order to properly troubleshoot. The missing icons are not affecting my enjoyment, at the moment, so if I need to do further troubleshooting on my end, it's going to be a few days before I attempt to just fire up a new game with minimal mods.

thanks for the feedback! i haven't seen anything like this yet. clearly those icons are working sometimes because you can see the Roman Forum in my own screenshots. any troubleshooting info you can provide would be helpful. if you know where to find Logs/UI.log (it's in the same place as the Mods directory) you're welcome to send me any diagnostic messages from it that are related to my mod. specifically, look for any console errors that mention bz-plot-tooltip or really anything with the string bz- or TRIX.

Sukritact's Simple UI Adjustments is definitely compatible – i specifically designed Map Trix to work seamlessly with it, because i use both mods in my regular play.

Unfortunately, I don't see anything in the log related to any of your mods. So, I'll just have to dig a bit deeper when I get the chance. Thanks 👍

Really nice thanks. Can you help me with a bit more explanation about the colored rings. I'm not following what they mean for some reason.

for example, the Library is a "science building" because it gives a science bonus for adjacent resources. the Market is a "gold building" because it gives a gold bonus for adjacent water tiles. the rings show you what kind of bonus the building gives: the Library has a blue ring for science, and the Market has a yellow ring for gold. there's also green food, red production, purple culture, orange happiness, and teal influence. warehouses have a colorless ring.

if the building is obsolete, like the Library and Market in the Exploration age, it's just a plain ring. if the building is from the current age, or ageless, the ring glows. if both rings glow, the buildings make a Quarter, otherwise it's a District.

beezany updated Map Trix with a new update entry:

settlement connections + base game bugfixes

settlement connections

City Center tiles show a summary of connected settlements, listing the
number of connected cities and towns. city connections determine where
towns can send food, and the total connections determine the bonus when
creating a Hub Town specialization.

bug fixes

the city growth mode now shows cursor feedback during tile selection.
fixes a bug in the base game.

thanks to @gzhekoff, whose Colorful Top Panel inspired the new Map Trix yield banner. the new yield backgrounds match the glowing rings in the Map Trix tooltip. the two mods are fully compatible! if you are already using Colorful Top Panel and prefer its styling, simply leave it installed and it will override the Map Trix version.

I wish we could edit our ratings. :D I'm still on my first cup of coffee and meant to say that I was trying to get the combination of functionality from OTHER mods but they didn't generally play well with each other.

Your two mods to play nice with each other and so far, I haven't seen any issues with other mods breaking.

haha thanks for clarifying! tbh that's a big part of why i make mods: i tried another mod that had a great idea, but it was buggy or overcomplicated or just not quite to my liking. and to answer your question in the review: the space in the top bar is tight, but i can try some things and see if there are any alternatives that i like. thanks for the feedback!

Coming back to the missing icons in tooltips - This morning I tested this with just Map Trix enabled, and I am still seeing this issue.

Comparing two logs side-by-side (linked below) and the only things I see in the Map Trix logs are these entries...

Code:
Line 08
[2025-02-23 13:58:20] Attempt to show cursor when it's already shown!
 While executing JS :30:23

Line 18
[2025-02-23 13:58:21] Attempt to show cursor when it's already shown!
 While executing JS :30:23

Line 184
[2025-02-23 13:58:45] Redefining tooltip style 'plot', is that the intention?

thanks for sending your logs! that's really helpful. i can rule out the warning on line 184, because that is a normal side-effect of the way Map Trix registers itself with the tooltip manager. anything before that line is unrelated to Map Trix, because it isn't running yet. i took a close look at the log and unfortunately didn't see anything significant.

is this consistently happening with the icons for the same buildings? is it totally random? something in-between?

easiest way for me to investigate is to play with an affected save game. i dunno whether you can send them here, but you're welcome to ping me on the official Civilization discord, where i use the same handle. i'm sorry you're dealing with such a weird and annoying bug. i hope i can sort it out!

followup to this: i experimented with the shape of the yield capsules and tried a few different options for space around the capsules. there just isn't enough room to put a reasonable border in that space – either it ends up looking spindly and weird, or it crowds the text too much.
