McCain's ground game in Virginia relies on spreading racist fear.

Virginia's Republican Chairman Jeffrey Frederick is telling GOP canvassers to spread ridiculous, unfounded rumors about Obama as they go door to door. It was predictable that the republicans would play the race/fear card with their backs against the wall. They have nothing productive to offer voters, so they've resorted to spreading garbage internet rumors on the ground. This campaign has taken a shameful turn, it is fun though to see the republicans losing. Apparently, they have no shame.

From Karen Tumulty at Time.com:

"If John McCain is as serious as he says about running a "respectful" campaign against an opponent he considers "a decent person," word hasn't yet trickled down to his newly opened storefront field office in Gainesville, Virginia.

No Democratic presidential candidate has carried Virginia since 1964, and most election years both campaigns pretty much ignore the state. This time, however, McCain is running behind Barack Obama in statewide polls, thanks in large part to the head start he got on the ground there. "We haven't seen a race like this in Virginia — ever," said state GOP Chairman Jeffrey M. Frederick. "The last time was 40 years ago, and they didn't run races like this."

Indeed, Frederick, a 33-year-old state legislator, hadn't even been born yet. But earlier this year Frederick unseated a moderate 71-year-old former lieutenant governor (who also happens to be Jenna Bush's father-in-law) to become head of the Virginia GOP, promising "bold new leadership" for a state party recently on the decline.

The McCain campaign invited me to visit Frederick and the Gainesville operation on Saturday morning, to get a first-hand glimpse of its ground game in Prince William County, Virginia, a fast-growing area about 30 miles from Washington, D.C.

With so much at stake, and time running short, Frederick did not feel he had the luxury of subtlety. He climbed atop a folding chair to give 30 campaign volunteers who were about to go canvassing door to door their talking points — for instance, the connection between Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden: "Both have friends that bombed the Pentagon," he said. "That is scary." It is also not exactly true — though that distorted reference to Obama's controversial association with William Ayers, a former 60s radical, was enough to get the volunteers stoked. "And he won't salute the flag," one woman added, repeating another myth about Obama. She was quickly topped by a man who called out, "We don't even know where Senator Obama was really born." Actually, we do; it's Hawaii."

WHAT!!!!!! really!!!! A party spreading ridiculous, unfounded rumors. No, this is a new and completely unacceptable practice in the US!!!!

I wouldn't be surprised.

ARGH! Accusing Obama of being a friend of "Terrorist Ayers" is NOT racism. Associating him with terror and emphasising "hussein" IS racist. But merely mentioning Ayers isn't racism.

The republican party in Virginia is spreading internet rumors, out of desperation. This is the republican party, not some fringe website. By spreading these rumors they give them legitimacy. I thought republicans learned their lesson in Virginia two years ago when Allen lost after the macaca comment.

Yeah, but associating Obama with Osama leads to racism, remember the lady who called Obama an "Arab." It all fits for these morons, Obama even rhymes with Osama, and now these rumors questioning his birth certificate. If he wasn't born in Hawaii, then where? Are we supposed to believe it was Saudi Arabia?

It's like Noddy does politics the US election. Thank God it will all be over soon.

You're putting words in their mouth! You're conflating this guy with some nut you saw on the news! That's not fair. Judge him for what he (allegedly) said. They're trying to link Obama to a terrorist. Fine. But not all terrorism charges are associated with arabs or islam. We have homegrown terrorists too. No one thinks ayers is arab

You know what bigots do? They associate the negative actions of a small portion of an outside 'group' with the whole group. That's stupid, because not all of a 'group' is ever the same. Judge the man for what he did.

It's taking it to an all new level though and that's why the Republicans have their frothing at the mouth brown shirts shouting to kill Obama, calling him a terrorist, and a secret Muslim.

Okay, Frederick's didn't call Obama an Arab, he associated him with Osama bin Laden. It would have been better if he had called Obama an Arab, like that old lady at the McCain rally. Why this questioning of Obama's birth certificate, if he's not from Honolulu than where is he from? Someplace Muslim no doubt.

How does that saying go? "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Crap like this is tentatively accepted because people like you play it down with a chuckle and a 'politics as usual' headshake.

Hello Mr. Myopic. While some people are intent at hacking away at that tree, some of us choose to look at the forest. And in that forest we have right wingnuts (which are a surprisingly large portion of the party) accusing Obama of being Arab, a secret muslim, and a terrorist himself. We have speaker at official campaign rallies getting their HUSSEIN's on for effect. And more than a few who think they're creative making 'obama/Osama' jokes because there happens to be only one letter difference. In that context, yeah it most certainly is appropriate to call BS and bigotry when the HEAD OF THE VIRGINIA REPUBLICAN PARTY, who would no doubt be aware of this context, tells his foot soldiers to make Obama/Osama comparisons.

He is telling his people to appeal to base ignorance, bigotry, paranoia, hate and fear.

As for Ayers, a comparison between Ayers and his (barely existent) relationship with Obama to Bin Laden's and the Pentagon bombers is a GROSS mischaracterization. Of course what I just said is the understatement of the century. Kinda like saying the Holocaust was a minor hiccup. To say that such comparisons are disingenuous and dishonest is in the same understatement territory. If the morons peddling this crap were pinnochio, their noses would be making first contact with alien life on planets millions of light years away.

I can't believe how the media is downplaying this connection. If McCain had ties to Tim McViegh it would be front page everywhere.

There is no difference between Ayers & McViegh. Both bombed government buildings because they were unhappy with the gov.

Actually McVeigh targeted civilians, Ayers and the Weathermen didn't, that doesn't excuse Ayers, but come on, this was fourty years ago, Obama was eight, and Obama has condemned Ayers. Annenberg was a Reagen ambassador, he gave Ayers fifty million dollars to distribute in Chicago. These desperate accusations will lead McCain to defeat.

FriendlyFire, Bush must be a terrorist, he's teaching kids the "terrorist fist jab."

And while we're at it, lets condemn Mayor Daley. The city of Chicago for naming Ayers their Citizen of the Year. Big time republican donor Annenberg for funding Ayers' education non-profit. All the schools that accepted funds from the group. Lets attack the University of Illinois, Chicago for employing him as a professor. Lets go after everyone in his Hyde Park neighborhood who visited his house or passed him walking the street. Hell, lets hit McCain for shaking his hand and calling him a good guy. (which he did.)

Whatever Ayers may have done, the reality is he's now an active and upstanding Chicago citizen whose well respected in the community and whose efforts since becoming a mainstream citizen have been applauded. His connections with Obama are minimal and little more than incidental. They were both college professors, both active in the community, both shared an interest in education reform, and lived in the same neighborhood...they were going to inevitably come into contact.

But every group without an obvious agenda and axe to grind that investigated the relationship concluded that there was almost nothing there. Character assassinating propagandists and one desperate campaign think otherwise. Ask yourself whose more credible here.

McCain has no honor.

Dammit Otago, stop starting threads about how racist the McCain campain is. Hang on a sec...

All Husseins are bad then? Try googling for Mishal Hussein, I think you may change your mind ;) God bless the BBC ;)

I guess your main clue is that the only people who're being actually influenced by the Ayers story is the same people who try to emphasise Barack Hussein Obama. Ayers has done his time, turned his life around, and is now (clearly) a positive contributor to society.

Would you rather people not volunteer to run charity boards with $50 million if there is someone unsavory also at the table? How is that fair to the people who donated the money, or the people destined to receive the benefit of the money?

Are you sure? I thought it he got out of it because of some stupid legal error.
The thing about Wright and Ayers is the double standard. If McCain was linked to the KKK and had a racist preacher for 20 years it would end his campaign from the beginning.
