Medieval/Renaissance Units & Leaderheads Previews

Fricking Awesome. Absofriking awesome!

I have one quibble regarding Nevsky. The chainmail hood (camail?) looks funny around the edge of the face. It sort of looks like you pasted the face onto a big ball of covered in chainmail, instead of the chainmail covering most of the guy's head. Perhaps you can make it so the chainmail rings terminate in a clean line around the edge of the exposed face, instead of simply being 'cut off' by the face? Or maybe this will be too much of a pain to attempt!

I love the spearmen too. Hundred bucks says LotM will put that earlier spearman to use in a really big hurry.

@Mithadan
I tried to make the coif look loose/open like on the pictures/sculptures but indeed it doesn't look very natural since the face just cuts through. Here's the coif placed in a "normal" way so that it covers the face, let me know if that's better (old vs new):

And completely unrelated, Eastern-flavored Spearman, based imperial Arab from DBA. Only the headpiece is civ-colored - very bright colours which I normally use for Arabs look bad on large surfaces like shields:

I like the first one better as well, for the same reasons listed by LizardmenRule!. I know those coif props are a pain in the butt. I tried a few different ones for my LH and they don't fit too well or, as you said, look nice hanging loosely. Having it move properly with the head as it animated was a challenge too. The units look look amazing.:goodjob: :)

Dammit I like the new version more! I'm thinking about stealing the idea from your Redguard leaderhead though ;) Is that the one from M2 ninja suit?

awesome looking spearman embryodead,
fantastic stuff! i think the chainmail looks great in version 2,
but a wider jaw does make him look stronger. ;)

I like the second version too! but why are your backgrounds so blur!?

It's how human eyes work. If you focus on something that is close, things far away are blurred. If the building behind Nevsky was as sharp as his face, it would look like it was right behind him, e.g. on a wallpaper. Note that the hall behind Jogaila is not blurred, since it's close. NB this is used in original civ3 heads as well.

The second one looks great too. I just think, as LMR said, that the first looks tougher because the jaw looks larger.
I'll check what coif I used if you'd like, but I know it's not the M2 ninja suit as I don't own that.:)

I used the Coif that was part of the 'P4Fem Platemail' set from Mordikar from the Free Stuff section of Renderosity.com.
It obviously needed to be somewhat scaled to fit M3, and I used a different texture, and had to taper off the chest section to disappear into his neck like below.
Left side is how the prop looks and right is how it is after tapering the chest.:)

Thanks Grandraem! It seems this coif allows more face to be seen though it will take some time to fit... so far I have problems with making it thinner, but I'll try some more later.

Also, some modifications and two version of spearmen, an early imperial one and one with scale mail, from around the crusades. Still not sure about the clothes/shields etc.:

Nice spearmen mate!
Just a idle thought, don't you think any arabian (or other person in a hot climate) would cover his helmet with a turban? and not run around like the second guy, with a metal helmet in the sun like that? :)

Those spearmen are just sweet. Egad.

Hard to say, so far, because it still is just the face cutting through. I suppose of the two posted so far, I'd prefer the second, although it would be interesting to see if Grandaem's thingamabob works even better.

What? Why? they're awesome. I love the clothes and shields and can't wait for these units to come out. There's plenty of Muslim leaderheads and christian units but we need more Muslim units and christian leaderheads (from the right era) to make some great medieval/crusades mods...which is exactly what your making here. (especially as M2TW was such a let down...)

I hear what you're saying with coifs. One tip for anyone using Jon Malis' IMturban with the coif texture is that once you conform it to M3, you have to select the head body part of the IMturban and set "bend" to 70 degrees if you want it to work properly.

embryodead, I'm well impressed with what you're doing here ;) .
