Well, one thing is that we as a society are more materialistic than in past generations, to say the least.

Maybe if you go by centuries or millenia.
America and Europe are likely more materialistic now than they were before the industrial revolution, but I won't believe for a second that the early 21st century western societies are more materialistic now than during the eighties (not counting the former Eastern Bloc).
If you want to go further back in time there's the 1920's and before that the Gilded Age.

I don't think it is imagination or an old cultural pattern repeating itself - this generation really is unusually mediocre and corrupt. As in, really.

It always looks that way to the 'old guard' when the pattern repeats. This mediocre and corrupt generation will say the same thing about the next one.

It's sort of like people who confuse "relativity" in the physics sense with moral relativism.

People are quite happy to be greedy jerks and retain dualist metaphysics.

I'd say that in my personal experience dualism does absolutely nothing to reduce "materialism" in the social sense.
