[UNIT] Mighty Ships Et Al

In my mod I was sure to populate N.America with plenty of native nations, replacing the one "Native America" civ with multiple cultures. I discovered a few native empires in N, America with my research, like the Calusa. I should upload the Calusa and Mississippian units.

I took on some of the Mycenaen units, as close as I could get to the pictures, what do you think? Did the "Pre-Phalanx/Hoplite" stuff.

I don't really know enough about Greeks to comment on it. I didn't even include Greece in this last game. Europe is a bit crowded. In a previous game Greece was out competed, and remained a city state for the duration of the game. On a huge map...

Same deal with north America. There isn't enough room for more civs really. If you did they would all be too small to pose a serious military threat.

Hope it's not Amazon. :nope:
I swiped some thighs off of the japanese worker. Used that as a guide for the rest of the legs. They are too close and poke through slightly during the strike animation. Also, made the shark teeth 3x bigger so they are more visible. The textures are rough. Need more blending/ shading whatever.

I play as Americans cause I'm american. That's what I know. :rockon::ar15::sniper:

It is Amazon.. :/ Not looking forward to that

I think it works pretty well. :) I'll just try to tune up the textures when I can, and then we can finally put it out. I also made a What If Mesoamerican cannon, but I need to make texture examples for it first...

I was just curious from an artistic perspective what you thought of my reskins good sir.

Prehoplite.jpg

You ought to mention what KFM it uses. I tried the phalanx and spearman and they were wrong. This is with the Charlemagne heavy spearman. Looks about right.
Code:
<NIF>Art/Units/Mycenaen Pre Hoplite/Mycenaen Pre Hoplite Three/NubianPikemanFinal.nif</NIF>
            <KFM>Art/Units/Charlemagne_HeavySpearman/HeavySpearman.kfm</KFM>
            <SHADERNIF></SHADERNIF>
It looks more than adequate in game. I've become accustomed to units being pointlessly overly detailed. This isn't. I didn't like it until I saw it in game. I like the cow shield. :yup:

Mycenaean_Units.jpg

Finally got around to the Greek dudes. Basically, two variations of the "Dendra" armor. A couple variations on the tusk helmet. Kind of arbitrary who got what. The archer is really basic. Doesn't even have team color. It's based on the only example I had with the reference pics. Who cares about archers?
The spearman uses the brass glow color rather than the usual bronze. The bronze looks practically incandescent.

https://forums.civfanatics.com/resources/mycenaean-units.28985/

No cavalry. Don't know what or when that might happen.

Thank you  MightyToad~!!

My hyperbole can't keep up with these dizzying heights of sheer amazingness.

This is the coolest the Dendra Panoply has ever looked. Tusk helmets are exquisite. And thank you for the variety! Imo your best creations yet, even the archer is top notch.

Absolutely loving the brass glow. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous

I am incredibly surprised, grateful and amazed all at once that you made these Toad!

Thankyou so much!

On Cavalry. The Mycenaens lived in the era before Horseback Riding, they used chariots quite abit. Actually your Civ5 chariot conversions resemblance to Mycenean charioteers is uncanny. Any Mycenean cavalry proper would be what-if. Classical era cavalry would likely have bronze armor, lighter than these guys here(maybe the Macedonian Cavalry Bakuel made, but with the helmut swapped), Horse Archer would be the Archer mounted.

Just for reference and organization:

Mycenaen Units:

Pre-Hoplites(me), Light Spearmen
Mycenaen Swordsmen(Achilles/Hector), made by Toad
Pentaconter(Ship, made by Toad)
Dendra Panoply pack here, Toad
Mycenaen Archer(Toad)

Other than hypothetical cavaly, there are the lighter Mycenean units, including the axeman with the horned helmut and huge gold shield, and a loincloth. But we pretty much got a solid set here.

I know there is an Agamemnon LH around and the Myceneans have appeared in Civgold. Putting together a Mycenaen civ with the unit art you'd get a real solid custom civ.

Those Myceneans look absolutely amazing! Now contemplating giving those as early units for RI Greeks, if only for aesthetic reasons. One question/idea: elements of their gear look quite similar to another bronze-age unit that has also been lacking in Civ 4, Sherden warrior.
Spoiler Sherden art :

If you're not entirely too sick of the Bronze age as a whole, these would be glorious to have (a single swordsman version would suffice).

Sherden...glorious
Well, we do have a veritable trifecta of Sherden with this resource (thank you again MightyToad):

https://forums.civfanatics.com/resources/sea-people-units.28663/

But I agree that it would be glorious to have a "lobster- style" cuirass (as can be seen in two of WH's images):

Massive Salembeti resource link: http://www.salimbeti.com/micenei/sea.htm

From the little I've read on my phone, this armor was widely used across the Ancient Mediterranean (Mycenaeans, Trojans, Lycians, Philistines, and the nefarious Sea Peoples).

Maybe if we prevail upon his Almighty Toadness (please please please) to revisit this watery part of the globe, he can toss in a couple of plum helmets so we can mix n match these guys like ferociously sea- faring Ken dolls?

Thank you for considering this MightyToad! Hope you're having a great summer

Yeah, I did a few sherden a while back, but they leave much to be desired.
I've been working on it. Using textures, and parts from previous units to save time. Still, it will take a while. Plan to do a another without the "cuirass" with the great shield like Geddon mentioned.

Yeah this guy, the Mycenean big shield spearman

there is also this bit of art depicting various Mycenaen warriors:

I based the Pre-Hoplites I did off afew of those. There is an archer in there, and a couple of big shield variants as well(with the cow pattern).

The big shield(gold shield) warrior looks pretty awesome in the first picture. What is interesting is his helm is starting to look like the more classical hoplite helm.

Yeah, that's the dude I had in mind with the big shield. :agree:
I finally got one acceptable version of the sherden swordsman done. Actually, the texture sill needs more work. I decided to post it here to see if matsuda, or whomever would like to improve the texture. Specifically the armor. I'm going to scrap this one, and re-rig to the praetorian like the previous two. I'm also not a fan of the "codpiece". :twitch:

Yeah I can try to improve the texture on the armor

I didn't know that, and assumed it might have been a weird way of tucking in the loincloth, but it might have been an actual codpiece.

Apparently, they were a thing in Egypt. TBH, this is a pretty sensible piece of equipment even if you wear no armour otherwise - apart from the obvious Freudian concerns, the inner sides of thighs are the easiest places to bleed out if you're cut (along with the neck obviously), thanks to femoral arteries. So I'd keep the loincloths as they are or even rework them into more obvious shields - gives these Sherdens a very distinctive "in Egyptian service" look.

Ah, waist shield. It has a name. As unfashionable as they look I would certainly wear one into battle.

Most of the depictions of the one with horns; the armor appears to be fabric, or leather. Only one looks bronze. And I think it may just be artistic license.
Sherden_Warriors.jpg

I did two variations of swordsmen and spearmen. The "other" spearman is actually for Geddon. I redid the achilles helmet with a crest for it.
Back to the horned swordsman. I think it wouldn't be too hard to modify the colors so the armor appears to be leather, or fabric. But I've run out of care for these now.

Oh way awesome stuff here Toad. They look amazing. Revisiting the Philistines and thankyou so much for the Mycenaean Big Shield Spearman! Very grateful for that Toad!

Where do you want to go next? You have really covered the forgotten times right before the Bronze Age collapse and part of the reason it happened, ships and land units alike. I know your probably sick of this time and region.

Wanted to leave some art for future reference:

Thailand/Ayutthaya

Scythians(One of the earliest Nomadic peoples that made heavy use of horses)

Interestingly, at least according to the art, plenty of female warriors fought too. Kind of makes sense for a Nomadic people like them. They are related to the Medes and Persians also(Indo European)

A couple options. I thought Celts, even remembered an old concept art for a medieval American(as in US) unit but I imagine in the future youd want to go to places not traveled.

Everything we could ask for and more. You are a force of nature. Thank you kindly MightyToad!

Scythians would be cool. The fighting females of Scythia are the reason we're still talking about Amazons today.

For anyone interested, the artist Evgeny Kray has done some brilliant work on Scythians and (non-Conan) Cimmerians. Don't know how good it would be for 3D modeling, but it's fun to look at:

Thank you again MightyToad! :king:
