After reading the thread about training prior to troop deployments, I became curious as to how many of you have any sort of military involvement. Also, as I know it is mandatory for some countries, such as Israel, that everyone must serve a stint in uniform, what was your reason for joining?

It's the Internet, so I'm an Admiral in the Queen's navy!

I joined because I was told there wasn't a room for me at the university till one year later, so I figured I could do the draft in the meantime and joined up. After that I found out I liked it, and signed a contract till 2010. I have been in army in a year now, and plan to stay here.

Mandatory in my Country, and i ended up working as a Aircraft weapon specialist for 7 years after completing basic military training... total waste of time...

3 years of mandatory reservist training...., plus a stint in a construction site in a remote rebel infested province.... that's about it.

I've never been in the military. My brother was a Marine and over in the Persian Gulf in '90-'91 (when I was eleven). He didn't see any combat fortunatly because no one called for an "amphibious assault" (he was on an aircraft carrier).

US Marine, was a Stinger (Man portable anti aircraft missile) gunner. I joined up because i wanted to serve my country. I got medical retired because when i was on the 15th MEU(SOC) an Avenger more or less got flipped on me when i was inside, messed up my arm bad.

I have a lot of useless knowledge about aircraft, missiles, armor and other oddities that have no use in the civilian life.

Short?!? I did three years at Air Force HQ, and that was my mandatory service period...

Didn't have a choice.

I served back in the days when we had an army worth the name. I am a ranger (arctic/northland) and hold the rank of 2nd lieutenant.

I'm a Sergeant (=corporal) of the Swiss Army in the news service of the radio exploration troops (hope that was translated correctly ;)). Switzerland has a militia system so I have to go every year for 4 weeks in a WK (Wiederholungskurs, repetionary course), my RS (Rekrutenschule, recruitment school) lasted 36 weeks, of which I have 8 yet to do (it can be postponed if you want/have to go to university).

I fought bravely in the Cola Wars of '85.

Coca Cola drinking scum. I fought the good fight, I drank Pepsi. We lost a lot of good men out there, some defected to Coca Cola, some just gave up, but not I. Each and every day, I went out there, put my ass on the line, and drank litre after litre of Pepsi. Some said we could never win, some said we'd never be at peace, but I went out there all the same. You had all the hippy liberal putzs back home screaming their lungs out about "market monopolies" or "antitrust" things they knew nothing about, and then you had all those liberals in congress constantly screaming "cut and run!" I watched my best friend die (or at least his teeth), got hooked on sugar, and came back here to a country that hates me and everyone was watching TV!

Some day, when the Second Cola War Two is fought, I'll be there. Right there, outside the Vientiane bottling plant, buying up entire truckloads of Pepsi.
