Abhorrents.
The word filled Ek’ with a righteous fury. These, these
abominations had sprung forth from twisted areas of Mobius; once lively patches of wilderness & farmland lay barren & dying, corrupted by the power of the Black Chaos Energy.
Ek’ shook his head. The massive Itzamnite force he led had originally been commissioned to protect the Capitol from Ah-Puch’s demons, but they were increasingly being called upon to purge Abhorrent infestations from Itzamna’s lands. The Abhorrents were astoundingly difficult to kill; worse, killing them did not contain an outbreak- so long as Black Energy Wells existed in The Heavenly Realm, the vicious parasites would spawn again & conduct another attack.
Ek’ received the signal from his messenger; the Great Flock was ready to begin the attack, as was the Itzamnite Navy. Ek’ gave his messenger a signal in return. The small insect spirit left to deliver the news to the Fleet & the Flock.
With a weary sigh, Ek’ ordered his men to begin. The army, numbering over one million men, started to march in unison. Humans, faces covered with liberal quantities of ritual war paint & carrying mystical stone knives & obsidian throwing spears, marched side-by-side with native Mobians. The Mobians, in contrast to the Humans, tended to carry metal weaponry; many were also endowed with natural weapons in the form of teeth & claws. The Nahual, who, as is the norm in the Heavenly Realm of Itzamna & the Four Bacabs, made up the majority of the troops, were armed with naught
but natural weapons. Being spirits of Xibalba, however, the natural weapons & defenses of such creatures could rival that of the best mortal armor or weapon smiths.
As Ek’ flew at the head of his force, leading the troops toward battle, his thoughts turned to the one the Mobians called
Robotnik. The technological terrorist had been staging attacks against the major powers of Mobius as part of a plan to restore his lost empire. The lands of Itzamna had, thankfully, not yet been targeted by the Eggman, but it was only a matter of time before he turned his mechanical abominations against the land of the Gods.
I suppose it is not so unexpected, thought Ek’,
that the two forces located at opposite extremes pose the greatest threat to the world; one representing the worst that nature can spawn, the other the worst that can be born of the sapient mind.
As he flew onward, his keen eyes detected something flying at a far lower altitude than he; the airborne creature was slightly to his left & far ahead of him.
What is that? Ek’ thought.
As he focused his eyes to get a better look, he was shocked to see that it was Muan, the vile messenger of Ah-Puch. The sight of the evil beast angered him; he was determined to catch up to her & send her back where she came from.
Ek’ began to actively fly, as opposed to the gentle soaring he had been employing previously. He accelerated, and the distance between him & Muan began to decrease slowly. As Ek’ neared the monstrosity, he subconsciously went into hunting mode. When he was just 100 meters from Muan he began to curl & uncurl his talons in anticipation of the kill. Just before he was ready to swoop in, however, Muan noticed him, and, with a shriek, dived.
Cursing his luck, Ek’ dived after her. The hunt became a race; if Maun could reach the thick growth of the forest before Ek’ could reach her, she would go free; Ek’ was ill-equipped to maneuver in thick foliage. As luck would have it, Muan vanished into the canopy seconds before Ek’ could gut her with his talons, and the Eagle Spirit was forced to pull up sharply to avoid slamming into a hard, unforgiving tree.
Next time, thought Ek’,
you will not be so lucky.
As he prepared to return to his troops, his mind began to attack the question of what Muan was doing as viciously as he would have attacked the real thing.
What in the name of Itzamna was she doing?
As he pondered the question, he was struck with a sudden, unshakeable suspicion. Despite the lack of evidence, he became convinced that Muan had been sent by Ah-Puch to cultivate an alliance with the Abhorrents.
Such an alliance could spell doom for us all, Ek’ thought.
We must ensure that such an affront to the Gods never occurs.
He resolved to speak with the Lord Priest on the matter when his campaign against the Abhorrents concluded. The priest would have a solution.
He had to.
