Mod preview: Sons and Daughters of the Double Cross

Don't want to meet him in a dark alley;)
But perhaps a garlic or a wooden stalk would help on his mood

On the subject of military symbols, something I'm sure whoever came up with the idea of the double cross was aware of is that the nazis used Nordic runes for many of thier symbols; The double lightning flashes of the SS for instance or the reversed sunwheel that is the swastikka.

The cross featured in the "Double cross" symbol would represent Geofu (been a while since i read about this so the name may be wrong); A rune which because of its design can not be inverted (this means it has the same meaning even if upside down). Where we most often see this rune today is in greetings cards or txt messages, at the end of a message like this;

My dearest Adenoid,
See you next weekend love heini.
P.S. wear the red thong and stiletos...
xxxxxxx

This is because the meaning of the X rune is love. Its quite amusing that Adenoid Hynkel has the nordic version of a hippy love sybol as his national emblem... :)

If you want I could help come up with some more Runic puns for other nationalities. Because although I like the "Evil eye" on Heini Whimmser's shoulder patch, I think the deaths head with + eyes and heart motif is still a little too near to actual nazi military and political symbols. You want him to look scary, but not truly evil.

Personaly I don't mind but there has been trouble before with sensitive types and the use of nazi regalia. You have to remember that such symbols are still banned in some countries...

Yeah, it's a very thin line where it goes from fun to ugly. And try to check which symbols neo nazis use, you don't want to inadvertenly use one of those. For instance there is the "varg hake" (Swedish, lit. meaning is Wolf Hook).

Whoa! That is one frighteneing leaderhead Ukas! The angry picture either looks like a geekish vampire or my eigth grade science teacher . :D

Good points you had in your feedback, Smoking mirror and mrtn. These matters can't be taken lightly - not all are familiar with the movie, as I've noticed (changed my avatar after some people thought it was really Hitler's face).

I wrote down couple of fundamental ideas when I started to plan this mod:

- Should be faithful to the general idea behind the movie and it's world (with the remark Chaplin said after the war: "If I'd known how cruel they were in reality I wouldn't have portrayed them in so harmless manner"). This will be a good versus evil mod with evil being nasty and disgusting, but still comic enough in it's cruelty and lust for power to make some satire of it.

- Govts will be balanced with different buildings - fascist govt is not just a tweak of vanilla civ communist govt with better worker rate and higher military police limit, but you have to resort to many nasty govt specific buildings to make it comparable with other govts. Same with Stalkinsky's communism. Civs will have specific units and techs to reflect their nature, their rhetorics in diplomacy will also be changed.

As you said it's possible some may be sensitive to "familiar" symbols, and even though I think Chaplin geniously captured the "double-crossing" truth behind the Fascism in a simple symbol, people who aren't introduced to the concept may think it's just another real life Fascist symbol. I'll do my best to avoid passing this image though. Heini's cap insigia I did in purpose to make him evil, the skulls and the heart as sort of macho occultic "in love with the death" symbol, which includes the double-crossing theme. Same with the evil eye. Simultaneously the skulls are an evil :love2: smiley.

Smoking mirror, I'd be truly grateful if you can help with the Runic puns - just the material I need! Also if you can give similar critics of the stuff I come up with?

Let's see ...

"Adenoid Hynkel of Tomainia - fascism (militaristic, industrious)
Jewish Barber/Hannah of Free Tomainia - democracy (scientific, commercial)
Herr Garbitsch of Schtapo - fascism (commericial, industrious)
Field Marshal Herring of Bluffwaffe Alliance - monarchy (expansionist, scientific)
General Schmelloffel of the Tomanic Empire - monarchy (militaristic, commercial)
Colonel Schultz of Osterlich - republic (militaristic, scientific)
Benzino Napaloni of Aroma - fascism (expansionist, industrious)
Madame Napaloni of Bakteria - republic (religious, commercial)"

... I'd still like to see Freedonia (Groucho / Chico) and their arch-rivals Sylvania ...

"Funny" sounding place names ... borrowing from heavens only knows how many languages ... and how many puns and ghastly plays on words :D

Angostura (as in the English drink bitters)
Arhythmia (faulty heart rhythm)
Belchissimus (dare we think a great belch?)
Bumbleburg
Comedia-sans-arte
Dooblecross
Doppelganger
Drinkenkuppen
Fawlty Towers
Flammende Herzen (German: "Flaming Heart" ...)
Goiterville
Kaputburg
Krisskross
Miles Gloriosus (Latin for "braggart soldier")
Leprosus (Latin for "leper")
Pantagruelia (after Gargantua's pal Pantagruel)
Purgatorio
Septicemia (staph bacteria infection)
Xylophon (play on "Xenophon" etc.)
Zabaglione (gooey Italian dessert)
Zapograd (Russian: "ass city")

... Any of these on the right track?

Amused,

Oz

Hehee I'm back... only to leave in few days, but this time I'll take the computer with me. Too much sunlight and fresh air already, who needs them anyway? :ack: Wish I'd have a laptop, not fun to carry my hightower & 19" monitor around.

The Tomainia mod is under work, but needs a lot of stuff done before it's ready. I'm working with the graphics and texts at the moment.

BTW, Oz, great stuff there! Thanks mate, more than needful. Zapograd? You kill me! I wonder what kind of place it would be to live in?

Well, gee, you're the graphics genius, I was sort of wondering what kind of "happy faces" you might be able to come up with :D

Blast from the past!

I am starting (or actually started couple weeks ago) to work with Sons and Daughters of the Double Cross again. Slow progress etc. but I plan to get the mod playable first and add better graphics later as I go. Otherwise I am prone to jam to design more and more graphics for it.

Anyway, for you to read:

BAD NEWS

If you we're interested to see this mod/scenario some day I have bad news for you.

Few days ago while reinstalling windows boot disk changed my drive letter order, so I actually formatted my backup drive. I lost a lot of stuff I will miss no doubt. I had little stuff backed up on cd's, but nothing I've done civ3 or tomainia mod. Well, except few links I've found some dictator pics from. Most of the stuff I've done for civ3 is saved here and in cdg, but all I've got left from Tomainia mod you can find under this thread -and as you can see it is not very much. Plans, graphics, maps... everything gone with hundreds of units, graphics, leaderhead etc. custom files dowloaded.

So, as you may understand, it will take a long long time if I ever get to make it. :(
Sorry.

Aww, that sucks. I thought that was the case with my Magnamund Mod a while back, but I forgot that I had actually moved the mod to a different location before reinstalling. :crazyeye:
Well, if you don't have the patience to do the work again I completely understand, but I hope you do it. Could be fun. :) (and maybe I could actually play a mod in the industrial era...)
