[mod] Warlords: Total Realism 2.3a

Reduce the overhead of your computer further. Shut down all additional programs (ICQ, even virusscanner if you can go offline completely).

Also Win 2k is supposed to be less prone to MAF. Vista I heard is MAF hell pure, but well, nobody is stupid enough to use alpha stage software anyway I hope.

Hello,
I seem to have a problem with TR 2.2, patch 2.08 or 2.13 - doesn't matter, I've tried them both. At some random point in the game - not the World Map, I play custom games - the game will simply CTD. I've read every TR 2.2 bugs related posts here as well as on TR team's forum http://www.civ4.houmie.com/forum/. I can swear that none of those are the triggers for my crashes. I prefer Land Masses script and after getting those continuous CTDs I thought that maybe the script was not good for 2.2, even that I never had any problems with Land Masses and previous versions of TR. So I switched to SmartMap - same thing. Original map scripts - the same. Could anyone try this save and see if it crashes? And if you succeed to get to the next turn, will you post the save so I can continue playing.
The save is TR 2.2, patch 2.08, Monarch, 6 random civs, small size, custom continents, raging barbs
Thank you in advance.

Absolutly wonderful! This has been one of, if not, the best Civ IV mod, ever. Simply massive!

I was playing CIV:BTS now i have switched back to TR 2.2 hahahah. This mod rules.

Right now i'm playing as the Carthags. I've almost captured africa. THe zulu's are still alive becuase i don't want to overexpand. I really love it. This is such an improvement over the 2.1 version. Great job guy's.

With the old TR2.1 at some point i got those shadowed unit things and buildings. When i ALT+TAB in and out of the game it was over this alway started the time i got curaisiers. Now with the new version 2.2 i get this a lot earlier. DO you know how to counter this bug?
-
Can you change Carthage civ in Phoenician civ. in the new mod? As Carthage is an Phoenician city.

Only by Alt+Tabbing. No realy "cure" for this exists.

As for Carthage - you can customize the name on a random map (and Dido/Elissa is actually a Phoenician, not a Carthagian - she founded the city), and on the World Map the starting location would be a very inconvinient one, in a very crowded area.

An extensive post like this I can't leave without an answer. :)

Grade: posts like this help us both to improve the mod and to get a morale boost. Thanks! :goodjob:

Thank you for your reply. Allow me to follow up with an update with a few more comments and even bug reports.

I found that my game crashed that same year because I was building that bugged Guilds building. Reloading and changing production fixed that problem and I can now play 10-25 turns before it crashes again, which is quite acceptable for now. The game is currently up to the year 1725 AD IIRC.

UNITS - The units are fine and I only have two comments: 1) There exists some units to which there are no counters at all. These, in particular when experienced, will be impossible to combat and be victorious over. Also stats for various units seem fine, perhaps something could be done with these particular, unstoppable units. 2) I assume that units such as the Levy are desperately put together last-ditch defense type of units to be quickly and cheaply produced. As they are now, they seem slightly too powerful and too expensive. I found myself tempted to replace all my defensive units in all cities with Levies. These units should not be as good as the standard military units of the time. I'd, in the case of the Levy, and its follow up units, decrease its combat value by 1, or more in the later units, (making it sort of a bad early gunpowder unit as the graphics seems to suggest) and also make it slightly cheaper.

RESEARCH - Research seems to be too expensive. I like the proposed changes that medieval research be made somewhat cheaper and the economy being boosted by 10 %, but it seems something more needs to be done. It might be a good idea to scale down all research costs by the same factor as the number of inventions was scaled up. It might also be a good idea to allow for research exchange as part of some high-level diplomatic invention. Tech stealing as it is now works adequately.

GAME SPEED - Starting from around 1492 or somewhat earlier I'd have liked to play the game more slowly. Instead of 4 years per turn it would have seemed better with 2 years per turn to really be able to discover all the technology of the era plus to be able to fully experience these important centuries. Decreasing the game speed up to modern times (where game speed is good) makes up for the the somewhat too expensive tech research.

IMPROVEMENTS - About the Monastic Order; it seems much too expensive for what is basically a poor hunter's cabin. The price would be acceptable if it did something more, like what I'm proposing below. In addition to the food bonus (+2 food IIRC) it has two negative sides to it, and decreasing the -10 % wealth to a -5 % wealth only would seem to be a necessity. If the downsides are kept, however, it could actually be a multi-function facility by making the food bonus +1 only, while adding either +1 Health (monks were experts at plants, herbs etc. and had some useful (and not so useful) ideas about healthcare) or +5% Science (monks very masters of literacy, copied lots of books and spread information to other orders; this is also a partial fix to the slow research problem). Also, a bug report: Temple of Artemis seems to give +16 culture! At least it says so in the leftmost list of improvements when I check Delhi where it was built. This value should only be +8 if I understand this correctly.

DIPLOMACY - When I eventually reached America I had the pleasure to greet the Incas by the following statement: -Your head would look good on a pole! :king: However, I soon found out that the three civs in the New World were very powerful, and instead opted to join the Americans in a war against the Aztecs, who were the weakest. I'm telling this because I was first greeted by the Americans with -You declared war against our friend! when I had, in fact, never even met the Americans before (he was, of course, refering to the Incans). This was some time after, but the perfect memory of the computer civs should be removed if possible. In the course of a full game most civilizations will hate the player because almost everything you do makes relations worse. An alternative is to make a few more actions available that actually boost relations significantly, which would make it possible to obtain at least a few friendly civs.

Looking forward to more Total Realism playing and the next version! :goodjob:

Sincerely,
Peter Masterman

Units: which ones are too powerful in your opinion? As for levies, this is actually more or less the desired effect - armies in medieval age were composed mostly of levied peasants, with all other troop types added in for extra punch. Nevertheless, we might consider making them cheaper.

Research: made cheaper in the upcoming patch. Will see if it is enough. ;)

Game speed: hm... This is actually the first petition for a slower game speed. Usually, there are demands for exactly the opposite. We'll be adding several new speeds in the upcoming patch; perhaps this a slower one could be a nice change too.

Improvements: Monastic Order - probably you're right, and it is poorly balanced - but it was initially considered to be profittable only under certain circumstances. Temple of Artemis - I'll look into that, but I think it's the old rule at work - a wonder's culture yield is doubled after a 1000 years.

Diplomacy: there's really not much to be fixed here - not because there's nothing to fix, but because there's not much that can be fixed.

I want to make a vote for a slower game speed, also...
The first benefit would be, that you don't race to discover thing like steel at the 21st century.
The second benefit would be, that the earlier Doctrines would make sense... I don't "waste" my great generals on making doctrines, not useful throughout the game, because it takes little time to research better units, that doesn't benefit from the earlier doctrines... (a bit contradicting, I concur)
But I think that either, the doctrines should be a real advantage in the early game, or perhaps should they give benefits for later units also?

I keep getting bad allocation does any one have a cure for this...... "Please"
I do NOT want to loose my game i have invested alot of hours.
has any one completed a full game?
If yes how did you do It?
Any fixes for the bad allocation?

Earlier doctrines are fine for someone who wants to make early wars - since early on, you can't hope to have accumulated a big tech advantage, and every bit helps. As for techs, they'll be quicker to research now - hopefully fast enough (surprisingly, this won't reduce the value of early doctrines, as research speed rebalance kicks in only in Medieval).

I'd also like to put in a vote for the slow game. The current speed is just right , all that needs to be done adjust date speed so that I don't feel inadequate with my paddlewheelers in 2190 AD .

Screw the slow Game it is Better to have a stable game with No Memory alocation that keeps making the game crash and all your precious hours will go to waste!!

I've just tried to install Vista Home Premium to see if that has any effect on the MAF bug. The install was unsuccessful though after about 3.5 hours loading. Will try again this evening. Like you also, I have stacks of unfinished games because of the bug.

I think none of us have had any opportunity to test our mod on Vista yet - so here, I can't help you specifically.

The only "fix" I can offer is to use smaller maps with less civs - and when the crashes start (this should postpone it for a very long time, if not get rid of them), lower the graphics settings. That's the only "universal" fix.

The power of "search".

Try to be more understanding and READ that the error lies WITHIN game exe not the mod.

I want to give my opinion about doctrines: if you like to start wars very early in the game, as I use to do, they are useful, even if they should be more powerful. For example, I adjusted all doctrines giving them some more bonus in my last game and in this is way they worth the general they cost. In the game I agree that most of them doesnt worth their high cost and a general as warlord is more powerful. In my opinion at the highest level they must give +50% experience points to the units, to reflect the fact they are more trained, and each level a growing bonus to the strenght of the units. With this bonus you can create units with greater impact on a war and force civilizations to enter in a war more often. I have no experience about modern doctrines because usually my games end before modern times :-)

I am getting crashes to desktop when I try to make a custom game. If I try to make a game with custom_contients, huge size, 8 players, and all other settings on default as soon as I click to start the game it crashes to the desktop. I didn't have this problem with TR 2.0 and every other game configuration seems to be fine. I have even uninstalled and reinstalled everything from scratch. As well as updated video/audio drivers.
