Most Influential Video Games

Not until someone makes a DF clone :)

I'd say this:

Doom (especially that!)
Halo
Command & Conquer series
Lemmings
The Sims
Sim City series
Monkey Island
Transport Tycoon
Roller Coaster Tycoon
Mario series

Seriously, those games were influential in my life and I played them a lot or go back and play them for nostalgia purposes.
I wish I had Sim City 2000 though, so I can use it for DYOS comics...

But my first game I played (that is, violent) would have to be Doom II. That was fun and cool.

Halo is very influential to me at this moment, as it's fun for me and I enjoy it.

Sim City and The Sims has given me ideas for some creative works recently and they're fun games.

Lemmings, well you can't forget that during my primary school years... Oh no, there's more of them!

Transport Tycoon... as long as there's TTD Patch and as long as it can be easily modded and stuff, I'll play it. It just is very creative for me! Roller Coaster Tycoon, well that's cool too

Monkey Island was cool as well you know, "I am Guybrush Threepwood! Mighty pirate!"

And Mario. Mario was awesome. Jumping across platforms, dying to nearly anything, knocknig out HUGE bullets when you're at minimum form (because you forgot to pick up the mushroom in the last level)
I hope I get Super Mario Galaxy soon.

The Command & Conquer series is really awesome. I remember in Primary School that I wanted to call one of the pet hermit crabs in my class, Minigunner, because the day before I got Command & Conquer Tiberian Dawn. I was only in year one (after Kindergarten)

Oh and I forgot: Another influential game to me is Civilization!

I have a lot of likes in games and stuff and I forget some of the old ones that I enjoyed as a kid or I enjoy now... but if I play it a lot, it has to be influential for something (Act of War don't count)

but its not about being revolutionary, its about being influential, or else games like system shock or WOULD be on there. WOW should be on there becuase A)its the highest selling game of all time, B)its the stereotypical model of HOW to the old well without being revolutionary and C) I think I heard that last week the FDA officailly classified it in the same field as columbian hard crack. I dont even play it, but its influence is definately far and wide.

I am guessing you forgot the years 1999-2004. Referring to an MMORPG as a drug isn't even novel to World of Warcraft. The whole mainstream obsession(versus the rather niche obsession and awareness of the Meridian 59 days) started with Everquest. That is when articles and urban myths about people becoming isolated or dying from playing too long appeared. The term Evercrack was very common. Selling of items for real world currency and character sales became common with EQ. I think it may have also been the first MMORPG to hit the one-million subscriber mark(used to be thought unattainable).

Stylesrj, the list wasn't compiled to show games that were well liked, creative, or even influenced people to do things in real life, but rather that had an impact on the field of gaming. In other words, games that had ideas that needed to be adopted by all later games or spawned entire genres.

The reason I replaced EQ with WoW (because that was what beat it out), was because of the enormous popularity of WoW, spawning books, and a soon to be movie. Lots of press coverage, South Park, China passing restriction laws because of it (a little dampened because of Brazil's laws against EQ). When it coems down to it, WoW is more of a gaming cultural phenomenon. 10 million subscribers plus people who play privately. As hard as it was to take out EQ, which laid the groundwork, I decided WoW big fame deserved it.

Having looked at my list though, I could probably take out Madden for EQ, snce Madden is a rather Americentric pick.

Yeah WoW, from the little i know, did not introduce anything much new.
Well it seems to have introduced the concept of making obscene amounts of advertising for a computergame ... Other than that ...

Remember this list is influence, not size. EQ has several books, had a discussion for a movie, and hit the 1 million subscriber mark. It is the game that convinced other MMORPG makers that this could be big money and probably started the big push of MMORPGs that emerged in the early 2000s(most failed). WoW is just the culmination of lessons learned about an EQ style game that has hit the lodestone. It is the Doom to the Wolfenstein 3-D.

Counter-Strike 1.6

i would put WoW down as the even more influential though, I think twenty years from now it will be known as the first hugley succusful MMORPG and everquest will be cited as its influencer.

I seriosuly doubt that most of the 10 million subscribers still play the game
they probably include banned accounts as well.

WoW is an extremely popular game, that's it.

I bet Everquest, if it had been released instead of WoW would have been even more popular (than EQ was).

More people have better connections now too.

Oh, I thought this thread about the most influential video games to you...
Anyone who read the OP and at least the first thread must have figured out that it's about the most influential video gamesin history. Seriously, how darn hard is it to read the OP's hard effort of creating an explanation of what the thread is about?!

Its currently the biggest selling game of all time, I think its quite popular.

It's not even close to being the biggest seller of all time; it's not even the top selling PC game of all time. World of Warcraft is only #31 on the list (although it is still selling and slowly moving up):

As far as that list itself, for once I actually agree. IGN did a good job of listing titles that created or reinvented genres. Some are extremely obscure today too, a nice bonus!

Now we shall criticize another game list. For those who don't know, MMO stands for Massively Multi-Player Online (e.g. World of Warcraft).

1. Grand Theft Auto
2. Pokemon
3. StarCraft
4. Resident Evil
5. Deus Ex
6. MechWarrior
7. Sid Meier's Pirates!
8. Jet Set Radio
9. Crimson Skies
10. Burnout
