MSTK1 - Monarch (Training?) Game

48 hours is more than up.

I've gone ahead and sent a PM notification to dalgo just to try and prevent this from happening a third time.

Pre-turn Have a look around the map - what a great start. I've never seen so many luxuries at this stage of a game. They will give us plenty of trading opportunities later. Meanwhile though there are a few other civs in the way ....

We are level tech with France, up Bronze Working on the Inca and up Ceremonial Burial on the Dutch. No worthwhile trades. Researching Writing at 100%. First priorities are the settler factory and exploration.

3000 BC Southern scout spots a goody hut

IBT Washington: Settler -> Warrior

2950 BC Scout pops hut and gets - maps

2900 BC Northern scout finds a barb warrior (uh oh)

IBT Scout dies :( Philadelphia: Worker -> Scout (replacement)

2850 BC Boston founded, starts Granary. Gold per turn back to zero.

2800 BC Philly worker starts mining sugar

IBT Washington: Warrior -> Granary

2750 BC Scouting, Working. Still up CB on Dutch but Inca have BW now.

2710 BC Dutch gained CB, Warrior Code and 10 gold between turns. Who do they know we don't?

2670 BC Working, Scouting

IBT Philadelphia: Scout -> Worker

2630 BC Northern scout meets English Warrior. I swap Masonry for Warrior Code (straight swap, he had no cash).

2590 BC 2nd worker arrives to help develop Boston. Writing in 8 at 100% and zero gpt. We are level tech with England, France and the Netherlands. We are up WC on the Inca who can only offer us 10 gold for it. Keep an eye on them though; one of their scouts might get cash from a hut.

Screenshot to come.

Looking at it now. Will try to play tonight.

My preference would be put Washington on wealth to get the pop growth than another settler, though it is is too late now as the shields are already in the bin for what may prove an unnecessary granary. May switch to barracks, though. Depends on what I see when I open the save.

The other choice would be let Philly finish its worker than wealth to pop2 than a settler from there to claim the elephants.

Do we want to farm settlers out of two towns?

Thinking out loud here: do we make the CoL-Philo-Republis bet, or go Philo for Currency (and hope someone learns Math in the interim)?

Try this for settlement suggestions:

The town between Washington and Philly is strictly for fill as it will pull down the borders of Philly to get the deer yard in range.

The town north of Philly gets the elephants and some coast to go with the riverside plains.

The last has gems in the radius and with another town four southeast will have the cows too amd will suck the borders of New York west to the forests.

I think I might have preferred for us to be a little behind in knowledge than caught up with all and in fact ahead of one. All in all we have a strong position, though.

Just to pick a nit roading the sugar at Philly would have been a bigger benefit to us than the mine. The waste in the town takes the extra shield from the mine but I think we would have kept the extra gold. And it turns out I was wrong about that as we don't get the extra gold due to the Despotism penalty.

In 2550 find another set of goody huts.....and in 2519 we learn Mysticism from the Inuit.

Writing comes in at 2350BC and head the shamans down the CoL path.

In 2230 meet the English in the far north of the Dutch.

In 215 disband the scout north of Inca and start a warrior towards Boston to help with the MP issues there. Boston should do wealth for one more turn then start a settler. Washington is building a worker and then should start either a settler or a barracks.

A warrior from Washington was out busting local fog and should return home for garrison duty.

Both granaries were done on the same turn. Philly is building a barracks helped by a forest chop on the plains game farm just outside its borders.

We know most of the map in all four quandrants excoet far north (English) and far southeast. There are socuts heading in those directions and a third making a last pass through Incaland looking for huts that might have sprung up.

Had to turn lux up until Boston got another MP so turns to CoL are now 20. We still hold the monopoly on Writing and Mysticism. As soon as Writing somebody else's hands trade Mysticism for the gold to finance our research path. Netherlands has the Wheel so they have trade bait for any new tech or cash that appears so watch them closely and when they have more cash sell them Myst.

How do you tell in advance whether or not a new shield will go to waste?

Edit: OK, got it now. Switch to working the forest to see where the extra shield goes. I should have thought of that.

I guess its my turn :)
Well I have no clear idea what to do except to expand as much as possible. Lucky for us, we have some really nice places for our expansion :) I'll mark a few spots and you could tell me what you think :)

I think I would like to start with red or green dot first... Securing a few Luxuries saved me in my last game but maybe that's a wrong approach.

With the green dot, it all depends on how spread out we would like our towns to be, so it could be either one of them.

Red dot gets us some nice cash right away and a lux later on.

Blue is also nice spot I guess, 2 Lux and I hope it gets to be coastal town as well.

I guess I'll be able to make at least 2 more cities in my 10 turns of play. Other than that would you like me to build some spears perhaps?
I'm sorry if I'm dragging this out, but this is my first SG and I don't want to mess anything up :)

Will play in a few hours. After that RL gets its toll :/

No spears unless we are attacked.

Put a town on the hill north of Washington between the mountains to get the game farm into the borders of Philly. But don't build any improvements there. It will increase the corruption at Philly a little but shouldn't affect Boston.

Blue dot is good then out to the hill on the coast west. Either green dot is good. With those towns we will have three luxuries in the borders. Then a town 4SE of the coastal hill.

With a city on the hill location recommended by Bede I would suggest moving red dot 1SW again. Plus it gets ocean access that way and is still a perfect Colossus city, since we can afford such luxuries on Monarch.

I would also put green dot on the northern spot, or on the hill to avoid wasting a BG tile in the southern green dot position.

lurker's comment:
Ack wealth?! No way! Do not produce wealth, lots of usefull stuff to build other than wealth!

I would:
- move the red one 1 SW, Coastal and on the river.
- Plant a city on the hill 1N of the Gold mountain (on the river I think?)
- Get the cow ASAP due SW of WDC
- Maybe move the blue one 1 NE to be coastal too...

Do coastal cities get any bonuses compared to inland ones?

Will start playing soon, have way too much to do right now :(

Well here goes nothing:

T1
Worker finishes in Washington and I order another settler. Start building another mine SW from Washington. Order just built worker W from Washington where he will build mine. Building road N from Boston. Sent our scouts to chase fog around the globe

Well another hard decision came upon me :) I have to trade some tech around... I notice Incas have IW and Willy boy has Wheel... Incas want Writing for the IW and Willy won't get Writing ot Myst that cheap so I decide to wait with both of those.

T2
Not much, gave 2 workers new tasks and scouted a bit. Warrior is back in Washington

T3
Ok Boston 2 unhappy citizens and we really need those Luxuries connected.
Worker irrigating near Boston, scouts still chasing the fog.

T4
Stupid me, forogt to change Lux slider :( So Boston gets unhapy and I give them 30% Lux to make them happy. I considered giving them a fool, but I didn't. Went after never use fools moto
Road NE from Philly.
Scouts getting bored
Tried to see if I could trade tech but no changes there except England has Wheel now and Jean has IW as well. I decide to trade Writing to Inca for IW and 10 gold... Hope I did the right thing :mischief:
We have 2 sources of Iron one right next to Norther Green dot and one next to Bedes town on the hill, looks nice.

mstk11hk.jpg

T5
Barracks finished in Philly and I order Granary there... Boston is fine again and will produce settler next turn. We are going -3 gtp, and have 23 Gold in stash. So after I pop settler from Boston I hope to be able to lower Lux again...
Still no GH from scouting...

T6
Boston finishes Settler and I order barracks built there. I order Boston settler to northern green dot. I'll be damned... I see France Warrior and Settler pair right SE from Iron, I bet they'll buid a city there :/ In that case I'll build city SW from the southern green dot :/ We need those Luxes I guess but we can kiss that nice Iron there good buy...
I send one worker from Washington to Lux location.
I can set Tech/Lux to 90/10 again, even 100 at Science but we would be going -4 gpt so I leave it at 90/10. CoL in 12 turns.
Looks like everyone is broke so no trades this turn :(

T7
Looks like French didn't like our Iron place :P They went south :goodjob:
Washington finishes Settler and I order another worker. It is at size 1 and I don't wan't to order barracks there and choke production for quite a few turns... Looks like northgoing scout found end of the world and I'll send him to join the others chasing last fog pockets. We are loosing 5gpt and I lower lux to 0 and lower it to -4. I go crazy and lower Science to 80% and now we have -2gpt. All the citizens are content.

T8
Dang... Incas want out entire stash 16Gold for paying us a visit :/ I cave, but'll have to lower sliders some more, perhaps sell something to Willy for his petty 10G :/ Ok, military advisor just disbanded one of our scouts :/ And to top all that, remember when I told you that French went south? Well they did... and got this far:

mstk21bg.jpg

It would be really foolish to build anything there and I have no idea on where to build a town. I like those luxes so I send settler on top of southern lux. Hope this will at least stop French expanding further east. Order some workers on mine and road near W.

I lower Science slider to 70% now to get us on +0 gpt :( I hope when we'll get some more money from next town...

T9
Which is Atlanta... and we are +2 gpt now. I order Granary there. I try to fiddle with Science slider but 70% and 80% are the same 10 turns left and +2gpt so I leave it on 70% CoL in 10. Everyone is still broke so no trades...

T10
We have worker ready to pop from Washington, but that was probably bad idea as W will stay pop 1 for at least few turns more, so you could change to barracks perhaps...
Sent worker to our Atlanta Iron...
There is one unhappy citizen in Boston that we need to take care of.

That would be all I guess. I would love to hear any tips/ideas on what I could've done better.
Bede I'm sorry but I missed your post with possible cities earlier today (read first thing after I opened my eyes) I should have followed your advice. I saw your post at 9th turn so there wasn't much I could do :( Sorry.

Hope I didn't make too much mistakes. Here is the save as well:

lurker's comment: Just a little trick for future reference. When you don't have the cash to pay tribute if you click the advisors face in the upper right hand corner it will put you into the F1 screen. Then you can turn down the science slider to get positive cash for the next turn so you don't have to disband a unit or building. Also for the next player it looks like you'll need to turn down science a notch for positive cash.
