Mugabe Finally Goes Insane

What do you mean 'finally'?

I think he finally went beyond insane. Something that cannot be measured by standard means.

While I agree with the sentiments that the UN should do something. They won't. They have no real power as evidenced by the multitude of issues they have debated endlessly on and ultimately did nothing about.

Mugabe is a paranoid little man who has only one thing on his small mind. Maintaining his stranglehold on power in Zimbabwe. He never has given half a hoot about the people living there, save what he can strip away from them to fatten himself.

If anyone needs to do something it is the African Union. With UN mandated support.

If any European power, or (shudder) the United states were to do anything directly it would simply (at least in his mind) justify that everything is some western plot to overthrow him (rather than trying to save the tens of thousands of people who are going to die as a result of this.).

But as recent history as shown time and again in the end nothing will happen, and the only real winner in this will be Mugabe and his regime. The real losers the people of Zimbabwe.

I just hope that something does get done before an epidemic worse than cholera takes hold. I shudder to think of what a major outbreak of something really nasty could do to all of central Africa. (Ebola, Hemorrhagic Fever for example.)

But in a defiant speech at Zanu-PF's annual conference in Bindura, the president insisted "the only persons with the power to remove Robert Gabriel Mugabe are the people of Zimbabwe".

Unfortunately, Mugabe is right. It really isn't the UN or the US or the Commonwealth who should deal with this mess, but that sorry excuse for a regional organization called the South African Development Community. As I've said before, Thabo Mbeki and most of the members sans Botswana have coddled him for years and blocked any direct action from being taken. The last thing Zimbabwe needs is a revolution and more reason for conflict, but it would probably be the quickest way to oust Mugabe right now.

Also, his middle name is Gabriel?

Ireland, it's my island. I own it.

He doesn't sound insane at all. Most political leaders tend to think of a country as theirs.

Even the lowly bureaucrats under them think they own you and your property.

"I will never, never, never surrender. Zimbabwe is mine, I am a Zimbabwean. Zimbabwe for Zimbabweans," he said.
This reminds me of the wonderful line 'one man: one vote. I'm the man and I've got the vote.'

Mr Mugabe said international criticism of his government's handling of the cholera outbreak was "a pack of lies".

"I won't be intimidated. Even if I am threatened with beheading, I believe this and nothing will ever move me from it: Zimbabwe belongs to us, not the British," he added.

He also questioned whether any of his country's neighbours would "have the courage to order a military intervention".

"What would they come and do militarily here? All that they would come and really pose is a threat to our stability," he said.
I left these bits in because they're so funny. They speak for themselves.

Well he is 84 so he cant have the much time left unless he makes it to 100 which is a scary thought not to mention when he does die there might be a power struggle which could mean civil war.

What's so insane about it? Zimbabwe is his, it's a fact.

He ought to be sniped down. With a .50 cal round.

the president insisted "the only persons with the power to remove Robert Gabriel Mugabe are the people of Zimbabwe".

Probably true, so let's hope they prove him right real soon

Sadly for Zimbabweans, there's not much oil there. So they'll have to remove their dictator themselves.

Yes, exploitation was so much better when white people did it.
